CBS announced not only its fall schedule, but a full lineup for the 2024-2025 broadcast season at a Los Angeles press briefing on Thursday.
As “Young Sheldon” is currently wrapping up its final season on Thursdays at 8 p.m., a headline of the slate is spinoff series “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” taking over that spot, leading into “Ghosts” at 8:30 p.m. Additionally, “Tracker” — not only the No. 1 new series of the 2023-2024 season, but the most-watched series overall — is getting an earlier position, moving from Sundays at 9 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Several CBS traditions remain intact. Tuesdays remain “FBI” night with the flagship series airing at 8 p.m. followed by “FBI: International” at 9 p.m. and “FBI: Most Wanted” at 10 p.m. On Mondays, “NCIS” holds onto its 9 p.m. timeslot, and after the cancellation of “NCIS: Hawai’i,” it’s 9:30 p.m. position will be taken...

CBS executives were keenly aware of the elephant in the room Thursday as new co-ceo George Cheeks and entertainment president Amy Reisenbach opened their fall schedule presentation by addressing the latest rumblings in the sale process of parent company Paramount Global.
“It’s a super quiet, uneventful week for us,” Cheeks quipped as he kicked off the hourlong presentation just moments after news broke that Sony and Apollo submitted a $26 billion cash offer to buy Paramount Global.
Other than addressing morale — “we’ve all locked arms” and are “focusing on what we can control,” Cheeks said — both execs spent the press briefing at the Paramount offices in Hollywood focused on CBS and its 2024-25 schedule.
Cheeks and Reisenbach opened with a victory lap of sorts as CBS finished the strikes-impacted 2023-24 in first place, breaking a decades-old record set by the network with 16 straight season victories and 21 of the past 22 years.

Banijay has acquired the format rights to “Alumni Lovers,” the school reunion dating show from Mbc that first launched in South Korea last December.
In a deal to be formerly announced by its global head of acquisitions Helen Greatorex at an MIPTV panel later on Monday, the French TV giant will launch the format in Netherlands via its SimpelZodiak label and France through Endemol France.
“‘Alumni Lovers’ is a beautifully romantic series, with a distinctive take on the dating genre,” said Greatorex. “Fresh off the back of a successful launch in Korea, we anticipate interest building across the Netherlands and France given this title’s unique approach to the concept of ‘finding love’. With emotionally-fuelled entertainment at its heart, this show is a brilliant and complementary addition to our burgeoning portfolio of dating formats.”

When NBC recently resurrected its long-dormant “Deal or No Deal,” it came with a new format: “Deal or No Deal Island.” The game show was originally a “shiny floor” in-studio contest where players had to guess how much money was inside a large briefcase. The updated iteration takes things outdoors, raising the stakes by adding interpersonal dynamics, physical challenges and survival to the mix.
At producer Endemol Shine North America, they call adding a fresh spin to existing IP the “Esna twist.” And it’s become a hallmark for CEO Sharon Levy, who took over the shingle — part of Banijay Americas — a little more than a year ago.

As commissioning budgets continue to tighten, and with content powerhouses feeling the economic squeeze, there is renewed pressure to think laterally in the international formats business.

According to the film’s official synopsis: Morán (Daniel Eliás) is a bank employee in Buenos Aires who dreams up a risky plan to liberate himself and his co-worker Román (Esteban Bigliardi) from the shackles of working life: Morán will steal enough cash from the bank to fund their retirement if Román hides the money for him after he confesses and serves prison time; in three years’ time, they’ll reunite, split the cash, and never have to work again.

Magnolia Pictures International has acquired worldwide sales rights — including U.S. sales rights — to heist comedy-drama “The Delinquents” from Argentinian writer-director Rodrigo Moreno (“The Custodian”). The film will world premiere as part of the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival.
In “The Delinquents,” the routine lives of two bank employees, Morán and Román, break down when Morán steals a small fortune from the bank’s vault. On the run, he glimpses a possible alternative to the gray life he’s been living and, in addition, falls in love. But he is forced to choose between this radical alternative and following through on his heist plans, so he resigns himself to a short prison stint. His colleague Román, unwillingly in possession of the stolen money, feels trapped by the secret he’s keeping; his paranoia increases until he too finds a way out, and also discovers a new love.

This post contains spoilers for the "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" season 2 finale.
With all eyes fixed on "The Mandalorian" and the other live-action "Star Wars" series on Disney+, "The Bad Batch" has quietly emerged as one of the best things to come from a galaxy far, far away since the House of Mouse took over. For as much as the "Clone Wars" spin-off played things too safe in season 1, it had an easier time finding its ethos than other animated "Star Wars" shows. Right out of the gate, "The Bad Batch" proved it was willing to go to dark places in exploring the early days of the Galactic Empire, starting with Clone Force 99's experiences during Order 66.
Things only got bleaker from there, revealing how the Empire emboldened enslavers and other criminals to conduct their business in the daylight, all while civil liberties were being stomped out. Season 2 doubled down on that sentiment,...

This Star Wars article contains spoilers for The Bad Batch.
The two-part season 2 finale of Star Wars: The Bad Batch not only serves as an emotional closer for the titular clone force’s season-long arc, it also features an unexpected Rogue One reunion. As much as Clone Force 99 has tried to avoid getting involved in the small rebellions that are starting to form across the galaxy, they keep getting into situations where they have to fight against the Empire to protect themselves and others.
In the penultimate season 2 episode “The Summit,” Clone Force 99’s story once again intersects with rebel leader Saw Gerrera, who also plays an important role as Jyn Erso’s adopted father and brief ally in Rogue One before his death at the hands of the Death Star. The clones first met Gererra in season 1 when Admiral Wilhuff Tarkin ordered them to kill a group of insurgents led by Gererra.

With its list of new releases for March 2023, Disney+ is premiering another season of arguably its most successful and recognizable series. That’s right: it’s time for more of The Mandalorian. Ever heard of it??!??!?
The Mandalorian season 3 premieres Wednesday, March 1 on Disney+ with “Chapter 17” and will continue to air new episodes weekly. A lot has changed since The Mandalorian signed off in its mind-bending season 2 finale on Dec. 18, 2020. Star Pedro Pascal has continued his destiny as a lone wolf guiding a young cub with The Last of Us. Cara Dune actress Gina Carano did some stuff. And most importantly: The Book of Boba Fett served as a sort of Mandalorian season 2.5. So when you see Grogu a.k.a. Baby Yoda back in season 3 despite jetting off in the season 2 finale, rest assured that that it all makes canonical sense.

Lenny Henry’s “Three Little Birds,” Steven Knight’s “This Town” and a first look at “The Summit,” billed as a blockbuster adventure reality series, look like just three highlights of Banijay Rights extensive and wide-ranging lineup at what promises to be one of the biggest presentations at this week’s London TV Screenings.
Further scripted titles will take in “This Town” and “The Sixth Commandment” for the BBC, “Domina” for MGM+ and Sky, and “Safe Home” for Sbs, as well as doc feature “Lara.”

“A Cielo Abierto,” the latest film from Oscar-nominated Mexican screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga (“Babel”), is being brought onto Berlin’s European Film Market by Film Factory Entertainment.
Produced by Argentina’s K&s Films, whose credits include “Wild Tales,” “The Clan” and “The Summit” — the last by “Argentina, 1985” director Santiago Mitre — “A Cielo Abierto” is directed by Mariana Arriaga and Santiago Arriaga, Guillermo Arriaga’s daughter and son, making their feature film debut.
“A Cielo Abierto” turns on two teen brothers who take a road trip to the Mexico-u.S. border to track down the man responsible for the car accident that caused their father’s death.
Joined by their beautiful newly-met stepsister, their trip becomes a “tense revenge journey to adulthood,” the synopsis runs.
During the journey, the trio, from Mexico’s upper-middle class, will also encounter “violence, tenderness, a wild inclement landscape, instinct, animals and seriousness,” Guillermo Arriaga said.

Venice: ‘Argentina, 1985’ Director Santiago Mitre on the Trial That “Created Democracy in Argentina”
Click here to read the full article.
Anyone who has been following the gripping coverage of the U.S. House Select Committee hearings on the Jan. 6 Capitol attack will feel a sense of déjà vu watching Argentina, 1985. The new film from director Santiago Mitre (Paulina, The Summit), which premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 3, is also about political violence and the attempt to impose democracy through the rule of law.
The film is inspired by the true story of Julio Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo, the public prosecutors who, together with a young and untested legal team, put Argentina’s military on trial. In 1985, they dared to prosecute the architects of Argentina’s bloody “dirty war,” when, under the country’s military dictatorship, right-wing death squads hunted down political dissidents and anyone believed to be associated with socialism or left-wing politics. Thousands of people were killed or disappeared.

“The Rat Pack? Hasn’t that topic been done to death?”
That is the question I was asked by some skeptical fellow writers when I mentioned I was working with author Lon Davis on Deconstructing the Rat Pack, our new book, published by Prestige Cinema Press.
It’s true: there have been a stack of books on the myth that surrounds Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford. But the fact is, myths are what have most often been printed. It reminds me of the line in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance: “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” Lon and I subscribe to a different belief: print the facts. PR reports of the time will lead one to believe that the Rat Pack came about organically, that their...

Kino Lorber has dated documentary "Who is Dayani Cristal?," winner of the Sundance 2013 World Cinema documentary award, for theatrical release. The documentary directed by Marc Silver and written by "doc fixer" Mark Monroe ("The Summit," "Chasing Ice," "The Cove") focuses on the human toll of the U.S. immigration crisis. Starring Mexican actor/activist and Canana producer Gael García Bernal ("Y Tu Mamá También," "No") the film will open on April 25th in New York, followed by a release to select cities nationwide. (My interview with Monroe is here.) García Bernal traces the steps of one of many workers on the Central American migrant trail who have died in the Arizona border desert known as “the corridor of death.” Aided by the forensic examiners of the Pima County Morgue in Arizona, the filmmakers look into the mystery surrounding the death of this unidentified man. During the investigation, Bernal embeds himself...

One in four climbers who successfully summits K2, will die on descent. These overwhelming odds are the basis for director Nick Ryan’s The Summit – an incredible story of courage and heroism.
Commonly known as Savage Mountain, K2 is an extension of the northwestern Himalayan Mountain range, and is located in the remote region between Pakistan and China, though most mountaineers won’t risk climbing the more hazardous side of China. It has rightfully earned the title of the second most murderous mountain.
With any high risk sport comes the love of the challenge and in August 2008, 22 climbers from several international expeditions converged on High Camp of K2, the last stop before the summit. 48 hours later, eleven had been killed. When a climber falls or wanders off the trail, the unwritten code of the sport is to leave them for dead. Survival depends on self-preservation at all costs.

Plenty of documentaries share stories worth telling, and play just fine resting on the strengths of those stories, incorporating requisite elements like talking-head interviews, news headlines, and archival footage. Filmmaker Nick Ryan’s The Summit, which meticulously explores the 2008 K2 disaster that claimed 11 lives, has all of these elements. But what it also has is a stunning abundance of visceral reenactments, which placed Ryan and his crew on an actual mountainside, where the intimate (and tragic) moments that the climbers’ own cameras missed were recreated. A veteran director of short films like The German and A Lonely Sky, for which he also served […]...

When the premise of a film deals with the story of a group of people away from civilization in which one by one members of said group die on mysterious circumstances, a standard horror flick comes to mind. Nonetheless, such description of horrendous occurrences applies not to a fictional narrative with the purpose of sensational gruesomeness, but to a true story of man against nature in a hostile environment. Nick Ryan's documentary The Summit attempts to piece together the events at the K2 Mountain in August 2008, a series of tragedies that lead to 11 people being killed. But, at such great heights, with the brutal damage to the senses, the weather, fatigue, and fear, it's hard to decipher why did it all happen.
Told through a series of interviews and reenactments Ryan’s exploration focuses on a certain individual among the big group of climbers. Irishman Ger McDonell became the first man from his country to get to the summit; sadly the story doesn’t turn out great for the charming guy, as friends and family describe him. It is important to mention, since the film fails to make a clear point of it, that all these adventures go into the trip knowing that 1 in every 4 people that attempt to reach the peak die. It is essentially a very expensive suicide mission for which people pay to be exposed to great danger. Unfortunately, the film doesn’t delve into the nature of such decision, or the motivation that pushes anyone to embark into it considering the fatality rate.
Nevertheless, there is a perpetual sense of suspense throughout the film that makes of it a riveting watch. As the different climbers tell their version of the fateful events the stories become more complex, intertwined, and at times completely illogical. Given that the same moral parameters don’t apply at 8,000 feet above the ground, the only significant rule is to guard one’s own life disregarding those that stay in the way. The last part of the film turns into a whodunit spectacle in which the media played a big part, leaving the task of unveiling the truth to Ger’s loyal local pal Pemba Gyalje Sherpa.
Perhaps even more thought provoking is the humanity that is lost at the mountain, or even before attempting to conquer it. By hiring the locals to carry their equipment and guide them, foreign climbers are basically entitled to gamble with their lives, in an already irrational quest.
The amount of effort, resources, physical and emotional endurance these people are willing to risk for a fleeting, yet self-fulfilling, goal is mindboggling. Reaching the infamous summit is only the beginning of the odyssey, after a couple minutes of picture taking, smiles, and rest, the way down awaits the “brave” explorers, and that is the deadliest part.
Compelling for the most part, The Summit, irradiates menace and turns the mountain into a freighting force to be reckon with. It proves the fragility of men in the face of overpowering raw nature, and questions human’s insolence by defying it. Death lures in the background of this retelling of a tragedy, and though the heroic acts of some can’t be denied, the collective, but fragmented, recollection of what really happened is fictional. It is safe to say that what happens at the summit stays in the summit.

Documentary recreates deadly K2 climb with suspense and blockbuster visuals. Twenty-two climbers representing expeditions from across the world converge at their last stop before summiting the most dangerous mountain on Earth, K2. All looks well at the High Camp, or at least that’s what documentary director Nick Ryan has us belief at first in his eye-popping and suspenseful documentary The Summit. Climbing buffs remember that August 2008 day as the deadliest one in the history of modern mountaineering with 11 climbers perishing and three seriously injured over 48 hours during a sudden storm. There’s a lot of mystery and heavy debate over the climbers’ life-and-death decisions, adherence to the climbers’ code and the incredible attraction for people to attempt to summit the world’s most dangerous mountain...

The Summit
Directed by Nick Ryan
United Kingdom and Sweden, 2013
The new mountain-climbing documentary The Summit has a few talking-head interviews, but is mostly dominated by dramatic re-enactments, much like the superb 2003 climbing doc Touching the Void. That’s really the best way to tell a story that takes place on the side of a mountain: talking heads or still photographs cannot deliver the pain of frostbite or the oxygen-depriving atmosphere inside the “death zone” above 8,000 meters. But where Touching the Void was very much about the isolation and loneliness of enduring the elements atop a mountain, The Summit explores how too many people can wreck the delicate process of climbing, and how they can obscure the truth of disaster and survival.
In 2008, a group of 25 climbers belonging to several international teams attempted to summit K2. K2 is known as the “Savage Mountain” (among many other nicknames) because one out...

Documentaries aren't always the most obviously cinematic features, and aside from a few breakouts from the likes of Michael Moore or Werner Herzog, are unfairly given short shrift theatrically. There's still that small-screen association for most cinema-goers, lured away by the comfort of escapist fiction. So when things like the visceral Senna or Tt 3D: Closer to the Edge gain momentum, it's a minor triumph for the perennial box office underdog. I can understand lacking the drive to catch Into The Abyss on a bloody great cinema screen, but when an epic vista-laden doc like The Summit comes along, it's well worth catching on the largest screen you can find. Nick Ryan's documentary attempts to piece together the extraordinary events in August 2008 that saw...

The obvious must-see this weekend, as anyone knows who's been following the fall festival circuits and doesn't live under a rock, is Alfonso Cuaron's space survival epic "Gravity," starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. But other strong titles are hitting theaters, too. Jia Zhangke's graphically violent "A Touch of Sin," which wowed at Cannes, is sitting with healthy reviews. It follows four different dramatic threads across modern-day China, supposedly based on real-life horrific events. Nick Ryan's Sundance thriller doc "The Summit" uses actual footage, interviews and impressive reenactments to solve the mystery of K2's deadliest day, which left 11 climbers dead due to overcrowded slopes, ice avalanches and breakdowns in communication. As they did out of Park City, critics are praising the film. The little indie that could this weekend is Matt Johnson's brilliant, hilarious and terrifying "The Dirties," which won awards out of both Slamdance and the recently wrapped Fantastic.
