Earlier this month — and just in time for Halloween — the production company Dark Corner, known for its genre films and virtual reality projects, launched a new app that aims to become the go-to platform for horror, science-fiction and other genre Vr. The app itself, named after the studio, is available for iOS and Android devices as well as Oculus Rift, Google Daydream and Samsung GearVR. It’s free to download, and offers individual titles as both free content and in-app purchases, generally for around a dollar each. The initially available projects include two past works from Dark Corner founder […]...

Anyone who has slipped into a Vr headset can attest to the visceral nature of the medium and it doesn't take long to jump to the idea that this is going to be an incredible platform for horror. Leading the charge on that since 2015 (aka, the entire recent history of Vr) is Guy Shelmerdine and his company Dark Corner. They created the landmark wheelchair-bound Vr experience Catatonic and its coffin-dwelling follow-up Mule. Now Shelmerdine is back with his third Vr experience, Night Night, set to world premiere tomorrow at Nyff. But apparently one new horrifying Vr experience isn't enough for Shelmerdine. Along with Night Night comes the launch of Dark Corner's own genre-specific Vr platform, the first of its kind in the genre space....

The Overlook Film Festival is something special. Easily the best genre event I’ve attended, Overlook was created for horror fans by a team whose passion for the genre runs deep. Not only have they scoured the globe for the latest horror movies that fans will get excited for, but they’ve also worked with some of the most creative people in performance art and immersive entertainment to offer attendees one-of-a-kind experiences.
Most film festivals focus heavily on the feature programming side of things for obvious reasons, but The Overlook Film Festival has enough alternative programming that you could spend your entire time focused on it. In fact, I’d say that calling it “alternative programming” does a disservice to what they’ve put together, as their special programming was stronger than the films they screened.
If you want the traditional film festival experience, that is entirely possible. If you...

The newly formed Overlook Film Festival has announced it inaugural year programming lineup, including 37 films (20 features and 17 short films from 16 countries), along with a bevy of location-appropriate genre-themed parties, interactive events, and live experiences. This year, the festival will also fete director Roger Corman with their Master of Horror Award. The award “was established to honor a living legend who has contributed lasting innovations to the genre throughout a long career, inspiring new filmmakers for years to come.”
The fest is styled a 4-day celebration of horror that runs from April 24 – 30 at the historic Timberline Lodge located in Mt. Hood, Oregon, featured in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” as the location of the infamous Overlook Hotel. The new festival comes from some of the same minds behind the now-defunct Stanley Film Festival, a similar horror-themed gathering based in a hotel in Estes Park, Colorado that inspired Stephen King to write his 1977 “Shining” novel.

John Huston’s primal heist film is an almost perfect movie, with a score of unforgettable characterizations. A solid crime noir, it concerns itself with the human ironies in the ‘left handed form of human endeavor.’

It's nearly impossible to find a film festival that isn't dipping its toes into the uber exciting world of Vr storytelling and Fantastic Fest is right on board as well. However instead of the typical festival program of a little of this and little of that from the world of Vr narratives and docus, Fantastic Fest is taking a different approach. This year Fantastic Fest has partnered with the Los Angeles-based Vr content studio Dark Corner to curate a program of three immersive genre experiences. Dark Corner at its founder Guy Shelmerdine are best known for their Vr experience Catatonic which strapped viewers into a wheel chair and put them in a mental asylum as one of the inmates. The piece was revolutionary for its...

Beyond Fest must have their check in the mail, because ol' Jack Burton himself is coming to the festival for a 30th anniversary screening of Big Trouble in Little China. Filmmaker James Gunn will be on hand to discuss the cult John Carpenter movie with the beloved actor, and that's only one of many events fans will want to mark on their fall calendars.
Taking place September 30th–October 11th at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, Beyond Fest 2016 will also feature screenings of Phantasm: Ravager, Phantasm: Remastered, George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead in 3-D, Martin, In a Valley of Violence, The Wolf Man (1941), The Bad Batch, Raw, and City of the Living Dead.
A 4K restoration screening of Romero's The Crazies will also take place, as well as a live performance by composer Fabio Frizzi and his orchestra during a showing of The Beyond: Composer's Cut.

Bradford Galt (Mark Stevens) is a private investigator with a modest office in Manhattan. His only help is in the shape of his trusty and charismatic receptionist Kathleen (Lucille Ball). One evening after a day’s work, Brad convinces Kathleen to spend the evening with him, not too difficult a feat given that she fancies her employer. When perusing the games at a carnival, it comes to their attention that a tough-looking man dressed in a shiny white suit (William Bendix) is tailing them. One thing leads to another (including an attempt on Brad’s life) until the private dick gets his tail to fess up his employer. It turns out Brad’s former partner and now lawyer Tony Jardine (Kurt Kreuger) is keeping tabs on him. What neither Brad nor Tony know, however, is...
