TV appears to have taken a bit of a hit on the diversity front in the first half of the year.
According to a new report from Samba TV, while diversity in the United States continue to grow, that is not being represented on the small screen. The company says that representation of non-white leads on television was down 12% year-over-year.
Breaking that down even further, Samba reports that just 39% of the top-billed actors in the top 50 TV shows of 2023 were non-white. Hispanic actors took the hardest hit, accounting for just 6% of top-billed actors in those shows — a 40% decrease in representation year-over-year.
The company used first-party data to determine the Top 25 shows each from linear and streaming that were released in January through May of 2024.
That’s not to say that diverse casting doesn’t attract an audience. In fact, as has been proved countless times, the truth is quite the opposite.

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the telefilms most likely to land in this year’s lineup. As it stands, Peacock’s “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” (a continuation of the eight-time Emmy-winning 2000s comedy series “Monk”) is comfortably leading the race.
“Mr. Monk’s Last Case” would be the first Peacock movie ever nominated in this category, as would “Genie” or “Shooting Stars.”
Last year, Hulu’s “Fire Island” and “Prey” were both passed over in favor of The Roku Channel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” but the streamer could soon avenge those losses with “No One Will Save You,” “Quiz Lady,” or “Self Reliance.”
Netflix – which won this award for three “Black Mirror” installments (2017-2019) as well as “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” (2021) – can now achieve its fifth victory with “Scoop” or “Unfrosted.”

Anna Nicole Smith died 17 years ago this month, but the fascination with the blond bombshell continues unabated.
Kal Penn is set to star in “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” a film that chronicles the final days of the actress and model whose accidental overdose death in 2007 at the age of 39 sparked a tabloid feeding frenzy. “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” which is based on Dr. Sandeep Kapoor’s 2017 book of the same name, marks the second film about Smith to move forward in recent months. In late December, the biopic “Hurricanna” wrapped production, with Sylvia Hoeks and Holly Hunter in the lead roles.
Written and directed by Thane Economou (“The Wedding Party”), “Trust Me I’m a Doctor” follows Smith’s pain-medication doctor whose life was turned upside down when he was implicated in the wrongful death trials of the one-time Playboy centerfold. Smith became a household name when she married 89-year-old oil tycoon J.

Michael Strahan was fired up after Emma Stone’s appearance on the set of Good Morning America.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer was back in the studio after missing Monday’s episode due to being on the West Coast with his NFL on Fox colleagues for playoff game coverage.
Co-anchors Robin Roberts, who returned Monday after missing last Friday’s episode, and George Stephanopolous were also with him on Tuesday’s GMA.
Stone was there to discuss her Oscar-nominated film Poor Things, and she also got the opportunity to reunite with another Hollywood star at GMA.
Bryce Dallas Howard appeared on GMA to promote Argylle, her new movie, with a star-studded cast that includes Henry Cavill, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and Bryan Cranston.
While those projects might have been exciting for them to discuss on the show, the two friends were more excited about seeing each other at the same location.

The Underdoggs is not just a comedy; it’s a rollercoaster of emotions that had me laughing hysterically and reflecting on life’s profound lessons! This heartfelt movie shines a spotlight on underdogs, the unsung heroes we often overlook. It masterfully weaves a narrative where these individuals, seemingly worthless rocks on the side of the road, transform into extraordinary, inspiring superheroes. The protagonist, Jaycen “Two Js” Jennings, goes on a tumultuous journey from the heights of fame to the depths of scandal, only to rise again by discovering his true worth. As he coaches a little league football team in his hometown, the film beautifully explores the passion and resilience of underdogs. The laughter is infectious, with scenes that will have you clutching your stomach, but it’s the unexpected depth of philosophy hidden in the humor that truly caught me by surprise. The metamorphosis of Jaycen is a testament...

He is a phenomenon, this lanky fellow named Snoop Dogg. Born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., Dogg has become one of the most famous people on the planet. Many might not know, but he has a healthy acting career as well, apart from one in music. By healthy, I mean it’s filled with bit parts in pretty bad and forgettable movies, but sometimes he features in good ones too. The Underdoggs features a full-fledged performance by Snoop Dogg as the protagonist, and it is hilarious right from the beginning through to the end. Directed by Charles Stone III, The Underdoggs is a simple tale about a washed-up football star who returns to his roots to help the underprivileged kids in his old neighborhood achieve glory. I don’t know about you all, but I’ve seen this story a million times. There are some minor changes here and there in each rendition,...

Although the prospect of seeing another attempt at reworking the “Bad News Bears” formula within another sport may feel like it would be a complete failure, the film The Underdoggs, manages to remain somewhat likable and entertaining thanks in large part to a strong ensemble cast that seems aware of what types of film they are in and exactly what needs to be done to make it work.
The film follows the familiar trope of a washed-up ex-professional athlete Jaycen Jennings (Snoop Dogg) who, after hitting rock bottom, is afforded an opportunity to redeem himself through community service. Service which ultimately leads to a fulfilling character rebirth as that former self-indulgent, hard to get along with, and “lonely” player rediscovers what exactly drew him to the game in the first place.
Director Charles Stone III – perhaps best known for Drumline (2022) and Mr. 3000 (2004) – holds the film together well and paces it economically.

Everyone loves an underdog story. We love them as much as sports movies and precocious kids. The only other thing we love as much as those is profanity. When you combine those together, you have a tricky project that could be masterful, or it could be a disaster. Luckily, no one can drop an f-bomb quite like Snoop Dogg, and he does that in his latest film, The Underdoggs.
In the great tradition of The Bad News Bears, Little Giants, and Hardball, The Underdoggs stars Snoop as a washed-up former NFL wide receiver who has burned all the bridges in his career. With a chance to redeem himself by coaching a group of pee-wee football players in his hometown of Long Beach, Two Js encounters more than he bargained for, as coaching is much more than just standing around basking in your greatness. With the “big game” only a few weeks away, do you need some movie fuel for your football “fever”? Something brand new, I should say since most gridiron fans probably have their shelves stocked with Any Given Sunday, The Replacements, and Rudy. Well, Amazon has just the thing with a raucous comedy about a ragtag bunch of preteen misfits in peewee football, coached by a guy whose heart is slowly melted by them. Sounds like a variation of last year’s football, er soccer, and adult inspired by real events comedy set in American Samoa, Next Goal Wins. Yes, it’s a tried and true formula, but this flick has a twist in its casting, as the coach is played by rapper Snoop Dogg. He provides the “spark” (if you get my drift) and the inspiration for the movie’s title, The Underdoggs.

Michael Strahan isn’t averse to throwing a jab at a colleague, especially on the set of one of his favorite shows.
The 52-year-old appears regularly on Good Morning America, where he’s had playful banter with Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and others.
Before landing on GMA, he started with Fox NFL Sunday to help present pre-game, halftime, and post-game coverage.
On the NFL program, his friends and co-analysts include Curt Menefee, Jimmy Johnson, Terry Bradshaw, and Howie Long.
A recent episode of Fox’s show featured hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg, who stars in the new Amazon Prime movie The Underdoggs.
Since the movie is about football and Strahan has worked with Snoop before, it’s no surprise the Fox NFL crew appears in the film.

Taking the inspirational sports movie template, then infusing it with so much weed and foul language that it deserves its own MPAA rating, The Underdoggs is a good example of what happens when Snoop Dogg steps into an otherwise familiar tween-age comedy to wreak havoc. The results, perhaps suprisingly, are far from disastrous and ultimately quite endearing, though parents should be forewarned of a movie that drops more f- and b-bombs than all the ordnance released during World War II.

The puckish appeal of Charles Stone III’s The Underdoggs, a new spin on The Bad News Bears, is apparent from its opening title card, which offers a warning that its R rating was well earned, that no child should watch it, and that, well, the kids you really have to worry about are the ones whose parents don’t allow them to watch R-rated films.
Snoop Dogg stars as Jaycen “Two Js” Jennings, a former high school football star whose clutch, single-handed catch during his senior-year championship game set him up for a career as a young NFL hotshot who, predictably, flamed out in a blaze of ignominy, hubris, and sativa. (His puff-don’t-pass signature end-zone dance makes it clear that the “two Js” of his nickname aren’t derived from his first and last names.) Snoop Dogg and Shanté Broadus’ daughter Cori Broadus is on the mend after experiencing a severe stroke last Thursday.
“She’s doing a little bit better,” the rapper told People at this week’s premiere of The Underdoggs in Los Angeles. In response to an inquiry about whether the health scare has shifted his perspective on life at all, Snoop Dogg added: “Yeah, yeah. Something like that.”
Broadus, 24, has been sharing brief updates on Instagram since her initial hospitalization. On Tuesday evening, she said she might be able to return home as soon as Wednesday.

Exclusive, Updated: The latter half of the 2024 theatrical release schedule just got a shot of testosterone as Amazon MGM Studios and Seven Bucks’ epic Christmas action comedy Red One just set an exclusive global theatrical release for Nov. 15, 2024.

By releasing Red One theatrically on November 15, Amazon MGM Studios is looking to take advantage of the traditionally lucrative holiday corridor before Thanksgiving. Rival wide releases on Nov. 15 include Warner Bros. Robert De Niro mobster movie, Alto Knights and Lionsgate and Kingdom Story’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. I hear that the movie has tested twice and scores were through the roof. This was in the last week, we understand. The original testing of the movie over the summer...
