The latest to join A24’s gonzo actioner Onslaught from The Guest director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett is Hellraiser and “Scream” series actor Drew Starkey, per Deadline.
Starkey will star alongside Dan Stevens, Blink Twice star Adria Arjona, and UFC Champion Alex “Poatan” Pereira, who is still in talks.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Onslaught is being described as “a gonzo action horror thriller.”
While no character details have been divulged for Starkey’s role, Arjona stars as a mother who “falls back on a particular set of skills in order to protect her loved ones after she runs afoul of a threat that has escaped a secret military base. Pereira will play a character called The Butcher and bring his set of skills – including anaconda chokes and roundhouse kicks – to his meaty role.” As for Stevens? The Legend of Boggy Creek. Cannibal Holocaust. Man Bites Dog. These are the usual suspects whenever someone brings up the origins of modern-day found footage. However, it was a long road full of cinematic experiments before these films would give rise to the movie that popularized the genre – The Blair Witch Project. After all, before Myrick and Sanchez’s film, most proto-found-footage productions were more interested in emulating documentaries and news footage than recreating amateur recordings that just happened to capture something creepy.
I say “most” because there is one notable exception. An infamous film so dedicated to its DIY presentation that many viewers were originally unaware that it was meant to be a film at all. Naturally, I’m referring to Dean Alioto’s iconic UFO Abduction (also known as The McPherson Tape), a misunderstood classic that I believe started all the familiar tropes of contemporary found footage over...

Has there been a more unlikely series of horror films than the V/H/S franchise? By the very nature of the sub-genre, anthology films don’t typically lend themselves to being series as even the segments within their own movies are almost always unrelated. Sure, TV has found a way to make it work in things like American Horror Story from Ryan Murphy or the criminally underrated Channel Zero that ran 4 seasons. Side note, if you have Shudder, please go check out Channel Zero. There are exceptions of course with The ABCs of Death or the Creepshow series but most of them are one and done. You also have nonrelated ones that use the same actors and directors like the wonderful things Amicus films was doing opposite Hammer in the 60s and 70s but again, these weren’t sequels at all. V/H/S has defied all odds and with a new film having just been released,...

The found footage horror anthology series V/H/S was launched in 2012, with the sequels V/H/S/2 and V/H/S: Viral following in 2013 and 2014. There was a spin-off called SiREN in 2016, then the franchise went dormant for a few years… before being revived by the Shudder streaming service, which has had great success delivering a new V/H/S movie every year. There was V/H/S/94 in 2021, V/H/S/99 in 2022, V/H/S/85 in 2023, and V/H/S/Beyond earlier this month. There will be no lack of V/H/S next year, as our friends at Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that Shudder officially announced during the New York Comic Con that V/H/S/8 is in the works and will be receiving a 2025 release. No further details have been revealed.

Jermaine Fowler, Dermot Mulroney, Rj Cyler, Freddie Gibbs, Yg, Flying Lotus, Jon Oswald, and Nicki Micheaux will also star in the upcoming Night Patrol.
In the horror-thriller, “An LAPD officer (Jermaine Fowler) must put aside his differences with the area’s street gangs when he discovers a local police task force is harboring a horrific secret that endangers the residents of the housing projects he grew up in.”
THR reports, “David S. Goyer and Keith Levine are producing via the duo’s Phantom Four banner. Also producing is Josh Goldbloom, known for the recent V/H/S horror entries. At The Streamable, we love watching movies and TV for free, especially if we don’t have to sit through ads. Tubi is great, but seeing an ad for car insurance in the middle of your movie tends to kill the vibe. As we race to Halloween, we looked up all the best scary movies and found that a huge number were streaming ad-free on Kanopy, which is free if your library participates. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Hoopla is another free streamer that just added a major horror partner.
Your library probably partners with either Kanopy or Hoopla (or both!), giving you an unexpectedly great package of ad-free entertainment.

Ah, October. The magical time of year when even the most horror-averse moviegoers pop open their watchlist in search of some new scary thing to watch. And while "Terrifier 3" will certainly be the highest-grossing horror film of October, the early contender for October's best new scary movie is "V/H/S/Beyond," the latest entry in the "V/H/S" series. With the introduction of a cohesive central theme — and a handful of emerging horror directors giving each segment their all — "V/H/S/Beyond" has restored the franchise to its former glory and reminded us why horror anthologies can be such a fun way to tell a story.
But if "V/H/S/Beyond" represents a resurgence for the cinematic horror anthology, it's not the only one. This has been a banner year for horror anthologies across all mediums, with new collections and series dominating the shelves of your local comic and book stores. In fact, let's make a...

Now streaming on Shudder is V/H/S/Beyond, which pushes the popular anthology franchise firmly into sci-fi territory with new bloodcurdling tapes that explore everything from aliens to horrific science experiments run amok. Among them is Justin Martinez’s high-octane skydiving horror segment with an alien twist, “Live and Let Dive.”
Martinez, one of the founders of the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, has been with the franchise since the start, having co-directed and handled VFX on the segment “10/31/98” on V/H/S. The filmmaker/VFX artist lent his VFX talents to the last three entries of the franchise and served as VFX supervisor on V/H/S/85 and V/H/S/99. For V/H/S/Beyond, Martinez conceived of his intense segment’s story with writer Ben Turner and makes his solo V/H/S directorial debut, putting his VFX and anthology experience to thrilling use.

One of the most unique franchises to emerge in the last fifteen years, V/H/S feels like an indefinite horror franchise. After enough of the filmmakers broke through in the mainstream, other emerging voices have been eager to add their names to the franchise. Like Punk Goes Pop or And1 Mixtape for horror, the series has become a scouting ground for the next great horror filmmakers. With the arrival of V/H/S/Beyond, we’re ranking the films of the franchise. Within each, we also do a mini-ranking of the shorts, so keep an eye out for your favorite shorts.

Plot: Six bloodcurdling tapes unleash horror in a sci-fi inspired hellscape, pushing the boundaries of fear and suspense.
Review: While the last few entries in the V/H/S series have covered specific years like 1999, 1994, and 1985. I’m glad to see the series leaving behind the year-specific branding, and therefore opening the story up to more possibilities. As great as some of those segments were, others felt very constrained by the time. In V/H/S/Beyond, the found VHS tapes claim to prove the existence of extraterrestrial life. But it’s not just aliens, as they take aim at robots and weird taxidermists as well. And it may be my favorite entry yet.
As someone who finds alien stories to be boring and very samey, I wasn’t entirely sold on the concept of Beyond initially. But thankfully there’s enough variety to keep things interesting. The wraparound story does a good job of...

Now streaming on Shudder as the perfect early Halloween treat for found footage fans, V/H/S/Beyond is brimming with mind-bending tales of sci-fi terror from a team of talented filmmakers including Kate Siegel, who makes her directorial debut with "Stowaway." Written by Mike Flanagan and starring Alanah Pearce as an ambitious freelance reporter investigating mysterious lights in the desert sky, "Stowaway" takes a haunting look at the costly price of capturing proof of extraterrestrial life, as well as the gruesome side of space travel when one isn't prepared for it.
To celebrate the release of V/H/S/Beyond, Daily Dead recently had the pleasure of talking with Kate and Alanah about collaborating on the thought-provoking and eerily innovative "Stowaway," including the creative freedom of the found footage format, the sci-fi influences of films such as Contact and The Fly (as well as Stephen King's short story "The Jaunt"), the adventures of filming in the desert,...

Many a horror franchise has been temporarily goosed by an injection of sci-fi — even the slasher at the center of the “Friday the 13th” series went into orbit in the 2001 “Jason X” — but that element doesn’t do a lot to distinguish “V/H/S/Beyond.” This seventh entry in the ersatz found-footage omnibus series should be another reliable draw for genre platform Shudder, where it begins streaming Oct. 4. And the ongoing overall enterprise continues to have value as a launching pad for up-and-coming talents. But despite its new thematic wrinkle, the five segments here feel familiar in ideas and unmemorable in execution. It’s a middling addition to a variably inspired anthology brand that will no doubt trundle on through more installments yet.

Any horror franchise that sticks around for more than a handful of entries becomes an institution by default. And few long-running horror franchises have provided genre fans with such a rollercoaster as "V/H/S," perhaps because each movie in the series feels like an unpredictable theme park ride in its own sick, twisted, ambitious way.
The first "V/H/S" film, released in 2012, laid out the endlessly adaptable format: a horror anthology consisting of "found footage" shorts, each of them directed by a different filmmaker, with only a thin (if that) thread connecting them all. Really, each "V/H/S" segment is an excuse for a director to cut loose, to run wild, and to tell a brisk, violent, sometimes funny and sometimes disturbing tale of terror. The only real rule is that it has to be found footage, but even that is malleable. Stories in the series are told from camcorders, GoPros,...

If it’s October, it’s practically Halloween and if it’s Halloween, then it’s time for Shudder’s horror-themed found footage anthology, V/H/S, to make its yearly return to the streaming service. V/H/S Beyond, the fourth entry in as many years, its seventh entry across two decades, and ninth overall (including spin-offs), once again doesn’t disappoint, delivering enough splatter, gore, and grue to fill several entries, let alone a single standalone entry running under two hours. Across six entries, including the obligatory wraparound segment, V/H/S Beyond retains its emphasis on horror but leans more heavily into science fiction than previous entries, bringing extra-terrestrials to Earth for decidedly unfriendly contact in half the segments, technology gone awry in another, a Doctor Moreau-inspired taxidermist with an unhealthy canine fixation in...

Anthology films have become synonymous with the expression "mixed bag," as it's incredibly difficult to bring in multiple different directors with distinct voices to create short films and expect there to be an equal level of quality or tone. In my opinion, that's part of the fun. An anthology film gives me the chance to micro-dose an experience of a time gone by, where I'd agonize over VHS box cover art in the hopes that whatever I brought home would become my new favorite movie. If it didn't, that's okay, because I could just move on to the next one. The "V/H/S" films capture that experience, and every so often, a segment transcends its place within the anthology and becomes something singular. There are plenty of "V/H/S" segments that I adore and can watch on repeat without ever tiring, but there will always only be one "Safe Haven.

The V/H/S franchise started in 2012 and fizzled out after three entries, but Shudder’s relaunch in 2021 proved popular enough to make a new anthology horror flick a yearly October tradition. This year’s release, V/H/S/Beyond, is incredibly refreshing, taking the franchise in a very different direction to exciting and gripping results.

While the past few entries of V/H/S have all been centered around a specific year, Beyond is (for the most part) focused on sci-fi and aliens. While it’s less of a unique concept — there have been plenty of sci-fi/horror anthologies — the team of filmmakers that have been assembled for V/H/S/Beyond has knocked it out of the park, delivering one of the best entries not just in the franchise but in the genre as a whole.

The concept of a haunted or cursed object goes deep into the human race's collective memory. Ever since we were barely bipedal Cro-Magnons, we learned that there were certain things we should not touch or even look at, lest we encounter danger as a result. As our minds and awareness expanded, such deep seated fears extended out toward the supernatural, and we began entertaining the idea that such things as books, paintings, music, and eventually cinema could somehow be cursed. While these fears are still alive and well in the digital space, warning us against clicking on mysterious hyperlinks, there's still a certain je ne sais quoi to allegedly cursed physical media.
When the "V/H/S" franchise began in 2012, the filmmakers behind it capitalized on this latent fear of ours, providing just enough hints and allusions as to why a series of VHS tapes seen in the films might contain eerie,...

There was V/H/S/94 in 2021, V/H/S/99 in 2022, and V/H/S/85 in 2023. There will be no lack of V/H/S this year, as Shudder recently announced they’ll be releasing V/H/S/Beyond on October 4th – and with that date coming up next week, a full trailer for the film has arrived online. In my opinion, the "V/H/S" franchise has been consistently worthwhile ever since the first installment dropped in 2012. A horror anthology loosely based around the idea of found footage captured and/or broadcast on analog devices, the series eventually abandoned its attempts at building a sense of mythology and lore and focused on the real appeal of the franchise, which is acting as a showcase for a mixture of up-and-coming as well as established filmmakers in the indie horror world. Sure, its nature as an anthology means that not every segment is going to be everyone's bucket o' blood, and some installments have more duds than bangers. Yet I've found at least one segment in each "V/H/S" film to adore, and in most cases have found several.
Ever since producers Josh Goldbloom and Brad Miska brought back the series with 2021's "V/H/S 94" after a seven year break, they've released a...

The V/H/S series of horror anthology films are, by their nature, a mixed bag of tones, subgenres, and filmmaking styles all huddled under the same formal canopy. In any single installment of the series—which now runs to seven main films, two spinoffs, and some TV shorts in the span...

The V/H/S films create terror through found footage, piecing together recordings from across genres to unsettle viewers. Its seventh entry, V/H/S/Beyond, continues exploring this style, premiering segments last fall at Fantastic Fest before streaming on Shudder. This review aims to untangle each chapter’s contributions and how the series evolves its format.
We open with documentarian Jay Cheel investigating alien encounter tapes. His loose framework ties segments exploring the draw of hidden truths glimpsed fleetingly. From here, stories scatter across science fiction, stitched together by their recurring focus on deforming perceptions of reality.
First, police officers in “Stork” track missing infants through a hellish housing complex. Its frenzied flair draws from shooters, gripped tension unrelenting until a jolt finale. Next, “Dream Girl” follows Paparazzi pursuing an idol whose gift takes a monstrous turn. It crafts rising intrigue into a mind-warping nightmare.
In “Live and Let Dive,” skydivers’ freefall becomes an airborne massacre as invaders materialize.

It's incredibly hard to keep a franchise fresh when it's been around for more than a decade headed into its seventh installment. But a couple of missteps aside, the "V/H/S" franchise has done a remarkable job of keeping things fresh over the years. I'm pleased as punch to report that "V/H/S/Beyond" isn't just taking the ball and running with it — it may well have set a new high bar for the series.
The seventh installment overall and the follow-up to last year's "V/H/S/85," this new entry takes things "Beyond" by giving every one of the six segments a sci-fi hook. Marrying sci-fi and horror has often yielded very satisfying results. Some of the all-time greats in the genre, such as John Carpenter's "The Thing" or Ridley Scott's "Alien," look to the horrors of science fiction to bring us something thrilling. Director Adam Wingard is said to be getting back to his roots with the upcoming action-thriller Onslaught, and THR reports this week that Adria Arjona (Hit Man) is in talks to star.
The actress is in “final negotiations” to both star in the film and executive produce.
A24 has picked up the package, with Wingard directing and frequent creative partner Simon Barrett writing. The duo made a name for themselves with The Guest and You’re Next.
THR details, “Many details for Onslaught are being kept in an underground experimental facility, but sources describe it as a gonzo action horror thriller. Since 2012, the V/H/S franchise has been consistently delivering smart, scary thrills and developing a growing following among horror fans.
Normally, after 12 years and six movies, excitement for the next sequel begins to run dry.
But the anthology format enables the V/H/S folks to keep things freshly frightening year after year.

Thus, anticipation for V/H/S/Beyond is through the roof a full three weeks before the film’s premiere on Shudder.
And we now have a poster and teaser to further whet your appetite as spooky season kicks into high gear.
The trailer doesn’t give much away plot-wise.
We have the same lo-fi, found footage aesthetic as the previous V/H/S flicks, but it looks like this one will be taking us in more of a sci-fi direction.
Fans of Event Horizon and the Alien films, rejoice!

The first "V/H/S" movie was released in 2012, which was actually four full years before the last manufacturers of VCRs, Funai Electric, finally halted production on the medium.
VHS was, for those of a certain age, a seminal and ubiquitous technology. Prior to VHS, the only way to see certain cinematic classics was either to go to a repertory theater (which used to be far more common) and see it on the big screen (requiring a well-curated arthouse in your town) or to wait for something to broadcast on network TV (which was often edited for content or time). With the advent of VHS, movies were on-demand for the first time. One could rent their movies from a local video store and watch them at their leisure.
