We have a special review from this year’s Chicago South Asian Film Festival. Guest Reviewer Beth Watkins gives us her thoughts on Sarovar Banka’s A Decent Arrangement, which stars Shabana Azmi and Adam Laupus.
I really wanted to love this film about a rudderless (or slacker, as the director called him) Indian-American man, Ashok (Adam Laupus), who goes to India for an arranged marriage wrangled by his aunt (Shabana Azmi). A Decent Arrangement is less the culture clash story that that description may suggest and much more Ashok’s coming of age, even though he is putting a first toe in the waters of self-awareness and bravery at a more advanced age than you might suspect. I was frustrated with Ashok throughout most of the film because he refuses to say much about what’s going wrong with his life. My favorite moment is when he explains to...

Still from Fabienne
I had never seen a film from Kazakhstan before and this was my chance to right that wrong. Kausar, directed by Gulsina Mirgaliyeva was the first film of the day for me. A 15 year old who hasn’t even matured yet ends up pregnant following a rape. At the maternity home, she comes in contact with other pregnant women which gives her the inspiration to go ahead with her motherhood. It was a visually striking film with sufficient humour and pathos to elicit claps after it ended.
No film fest experience is complete without a taste or Iranian cinema. So I went in for Amir Hossein Saghafi’s Death is my Profession and was bowled over. Three thieves steal electric cables. One gets electrocuted on the spot. One gets arrested and the third flees. The rest of the film is about the retribution the two survivors receive.

October 4, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): A rebel, a firebrand, a social activist all rolled into one sums up Shabana Azmi’s portrait. She is Bollywood’s most fiery, blunt to the point of arrogance, and a bit short tempered actress but, of course, she prefers being known as the champion of women’s causes. Her Bollywood journey from Shyam Benegal’s ‘Ankur’ as a suppressed woman, Laxmi, to her recent release ‘It’s a Wonderful Afterlife’ aptly sums up her illustrious career which will definitely go down in the annals of the historic Indian Cinema. In her more than 3 decades of real & reel life journey, she has displayed the entire gamut of her talented persona, yet she has no desire to hang up her multifaceted boots till its time to bid a final adieu. Sampurn Wire’s Shaheen Raaj had an exclusive chat with this extraordinary artist recently, on the eve...
