Exclusive: Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal have teamed up for their first podcast, Pie. People. Influences. Experiences. The program will start April 2, available on all podcast players and YouTube.
They describe Pie as an intimate parlor conversation exploring the ingredients that “baked up” each guest. It is a respectful, deep dive into nature and nurture — family, faith, friends, hometowns, schooling, mentors, tormentors, etc. It will be the heart-to-heart chat that gives us some authentic insight into each guest’s personal and professional choices — in the arts, athletics, healthcare, politics, etc.
I can testify that between them, this couple can cover a healthy span of topics. A few years back, I convinced Sutter to co-live blog the Emmys for Deadline. Only when I arrived at their home did I learn that Kurt had been so busy as the writer, director and producer of my fave FX series Sons of Anarchy, that...

Verdi Productions, run by Chad A. Verdi, Paul Luba, Chad Verdi, Jr.
and Michelle Verdi, plans to release three films in 2024 that were previously put on hold since actors were unable to promote work during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“Workers in the film industry are getting financially destroyed by these strikes, whether it’s actors, writers, directors or crew. Most of these individuals were already working multiple jobs to get by,” Verdi said in a statement. “This widespread production shutdown didn’t hurt the top 1% in the industry but ruined many people who work week-to-week and paycheck-to-paycheck. It’s very unfortunate to see. Let’s get our union members a fair deal so that they can get back to doing what they love.”

The movie will chart the story of Ali Jr. who has struggled to live in his legendary father’s shadow, dealing with bullying, abandonment, drug addiction and family issues. More recently, Ali Jr. has found greater peace with himself, his former relationship, his father and his own children.
Verdi recently produced a documentary on the same subject.

Exclusive: Copper comes from Arizona, and Peaches from Georgia, but if we had to rewrite the lyrics to the Blossom Dearie standard “Rhode Island is Famous For You,” you can add film production to the latter 1,214 square mile sized state. Amazon Prime Video has confirmed that several of its original series will be debuting new episodes on the streaming service in August, including the first season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.” John Krasinski, who is red-hot following the success of his winter hit “A Quiet Place,” takes on the role of the CIA spy that has been played on the big screen by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine.
Likewise, there will be plenty of movies making their first appearances on Amazon Prime Video including the action comedy “Gringo,” which stars David Oyelowo as a businessman who unwittingly becomes involved with a Mexican drug cartel.
Unlike Netflix, Amazon does not disclose the shows and movies leaving the service in any given month. We’ve done some digging and unearthed a few titles that will be exiting Amazon Prime Video in the first week of August. News...

Miles Teller is officially joining Tom Cruise in “Tom Gun: Maverick,” Variety confirms. The “Whiplash” star has landed the coveted role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s new protege and son of his late partner Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards in the first installment. Cruise is reprising his role as Maverick in the sequel. Teller reportedly beat out Glen Powell and Nicholas Hoult for the role.
“Tom Gun: Maverick,” directed by Cruise’s “Oblivion” helmer Joseph Kosinski, is the sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 action drama. The new movie is set in the world of drone warfare and explores the end of the dogfighting era that was the center of the original film. Original producer Jerry Bruckheimer is back on board for the sequel, joining Cruise and Skydance CEO David Ellison.

Former boxing champ Vinny Paz -- the inspiration for the Miles Teller movie "Bleed for This" -- says he's the real victim in a Very violent incident in Rhode Island. Here's what we know ... cops responded to a home in Providence early Tuesday morning -- where witnesses claimed the 55-year-old pummeled another man during a dispute over money. Witnesses told police Paz had accused the other man of stealing $16,000 from him -- and that's what started the attack.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Familiar in its overall storytelling arcs about risktaking and redemption, but also a sincere tribute to our new firefighting heroes for a warmer planet. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I have read the source material (though only after I’d seen the movie) (and I am indifferent about it)

New heroes for a hotter, more fiery planet? Could be. Elite firefighter “hotshots” are the guys who helicopter or hike into wildfires and break them, saving not just a house or two but entire towns, and also wildlife and nature, too. (They literally call themselves hotshots, and it’s tough to snort at this macho boasting because they’re so genuinely badass but also so beneficial, with no downsides. Miles Teller must have a weird feeling of deja vu. Around this time last year, while on the circuit for “Bleed For This,” the actor addressed rumors that he turned down $4 million to star in “La La Land,” and that as negotiations dragged out, his scheduling window basically closed, leaving him to go off and do “Allegiant.” Originally slated to star Teller and Emma Watson, the pair were replaced by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, and rest is history.

Here’s yet another “inspired by true events” film , just in time for the somber Fall season. Somber, the right word for this one. Unlike this weekend’s other non-fiction flicks, it’s set in the not too distant past, not decades ago, but in this decade, the 2010’s. It concerns a group of men who regularly risk their lives, and often make the ultimate sacrifice, in order to protect their fellow men. And it shines a light on the families that must stay behind and hope that all goes well. You may be thinking that’s it’s another those on the front line, our soldiers overseas sagas as in the films The Hurt Locker and American Sniper. Well, these heroes aren’t on foreign soil, though they are on the front line, one made of flame. And with their special clothing and gear ,they could be mistaken for soldiers.

“Dunkirk” aside, deep summer looks like a fallow season for major films — but appearances are deceiving. This is perhaps their most-essential moment on the movie calendar, as it’s when distributors huddle, haggle, and negotiate to determine which movies will head for the almighty awards-season launch festivals of Venice, Telluride, Toronto, and New York.
From the festivals’ perspectives, they’re vying for the starriest red-carpet gala world premieres. (The exception is Telluride, which doesn’t have to vie; it gets to cherry pick its impeccably curated four-day Labor Day Weekend selection in secret.) Ahead of next week’s rollout of announcements, we called around for intel on what we can expect to see.

Sony Pictures has released the trailer for “Only the Brave,” the biographical drama starring Miles Teller and Josh Brolin based on the true story about firefighters and the historic wildfire that struck Yarnell, Arizona in June of 2013. Formerly known as “Granite Mountain Hotshots,” the name of the elite firefighting group that battled the deadly blaze, the film only took on its new title this week. GQ, which posted the trailer on Wednesday, published a magazine feature about the story entitled “No Exit” in 2013.

Towards the tail end of 2016 I was trawling my Twitter feed for something new and interesting, when I stumbled across what looked like a really intriguing low-budget indie movie that was a cut above a lot of what you find out there. I contacted the director, Anthony, and we kinda hit it off. He sent me a copy of the film, Bad Frank, and asked if I would like to do a review, which I did (Bad Frank review).
I kept in touch with Tony as he hit the festival trail and was always happy to hear how well it was doing. So as you can imagine when I found it was getting a much bigger release in order to have a much bigger audience… Well, I am really happy for Tony and his crew; and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to interview him as Bad Frank prepares to hit VOD next month.

Before Chadwick Boseman becomes a Hollywood superstar with the release of Marvel’s “Black Panther” in February 2018, he’ll bring the historic rise of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to the big screen in the awards season biopic “Marshall.” The drama is directed by Reginald Hudlin, marking his first feature in 15 years, and focuses on Marshall long before he would go on to become the first African-American to take the role of Supreme Court Justice.

“Marshall” is set in 1941 and follows the young lawyer as he defends a black chauffeur (Emmy-winner Sterling K.Brown) against sexual assault and murder charges. Marshall was partnered with Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a young Jewish lawyer who had never tried a case before. Kate Hudson co-stars.
Distributor Open Road Films has already locked in an October 13 release date for the drama, which means it’s likely “Marshall” pops up on the fall film festival circuit. With the resurgence in boxing films over the last couple of years, sparked by the return of the Rocky franchise with Creed, we’ve also seen Southpaw, Hands of Stone and Bleed For This. By now we are familiar with the redemption arcs and comeback stories, so much so it’s become a breeze predicting the plot points and action beats when watching a boxing flick. However director Thomas Napper certainly makes an attempt for originality with his debut feature Jawbone. Written by and starring Johnny Harris, Jawbone is a contemporary, gritty, British boxing drama, and whilst you’d be right not to feel blown away by this film; it should in no way be overlooked.

Several top specialized distributors optimistically counter-programmed against Marvel’s May juggernaut “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” hoping to fill the vacuum with no other wide releases to grab attention. That strategy can can launch a film like “Belle,” “Ida,” and “Far from the Madding Crowd” toward a big push in the early summer period including Memorial Day weekend.

04.27.17: This list is now final. While I may in the future see additional films that were released in the awards year of 2016, no more films will be added to this list. (I may add links to reviews of films listed here.)
This ranking includes only new theatrical releases viewed for the awards year of 2016 (for eligibility for the Academy Awards and the Ofcs and Awfj awards); some films released in the UK without Us releases (and so ineligible for those awards this year) may also be included, for my own bookkeeping purposes. Links go to my review. Numbers after each entry are Date First Viewed/NYC Release Date/London Release Date; year is 2016 unless otherwise noted.

Movies about boxing are undergoing a miniature renaissance at the moment. Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen Jake Gyllenhaal getting the crap knocked out of him in Southpaw, Miles Teller training with a broken neck in Bleed for This, and Michael B. Jordan realizing he can go the distance in the excellent Creed. Now, Liev Schreiber is taking his turn in the ring, in Philippe Falardeau’s Chuck.
Once known as The Bleeder (in my opinion, a far superior title), Chuck is a biopic of New Jersey boxer Chuck Wepner. Wepner isn’t known primarily for his sporting achievements (though he did go fifteen rounds against Muhammed Ali), but because he’s the inspiration for Rocky Balboa. According to the synopsis, we’ll follow ‘the pride of Bayonne, New Jersey’ as he progresses from being a down-on-his-luck liquor salesman with a modest prizefighting career to being offered...

A subgenre which has had a resurgence in the past few years in the boxing drama. Following Creed, Southpaw, Hands of Stone, and Bleed for This, another will arrive this year with Chuck, once titled The Bleeder when it premiered at Venice International Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival last fall. The latest drama from Philippe Falardeau (Monsieur Lazhar, The Good Lie) stars Liev Schreiber, Elisabeth Moss, and Naomi Watts and follows the life of New Jersey boxer Chuck Wepner who was the inspiration behind Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky character. Ahead of a release this May, IFC Films have now released the first trailer.
We said in our review, “The Bleeder looks a bit familiar. A film of browns and greens; disco music and ‘70s rock tunes; big haircuts and even bigger lapels. Indeed, in a way reminiscent of recent period efforts such as Black Mass and David O. Russell’s last two outings,...

Film star boards Danish auteur’s TV project.
Miles Teller has been cast in Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming Amazon series Too Old to Die Young.
In his first regular TV series role, Teller will play Martin, a police officer entangled in the world of assassins.
Refn, known for directing Drive and the Amazon Studios film Neon Demon, will write the dramatic series that explores the criminal underbelly of Los Angeles by following killers’ existential journeys in becoming samurai. Refn will direct the entire series.
Ed Brubaker, whose credits include HBO’s Westworld and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, will co-write with Refn.
“I’m a huge fan of Nic’s work so the opportunity to work with him, and for a company like Amazon, with this type of material is very exciting,” Teller said.
Teller is best known for his starring role as a troubled young drummer in Damien Chazelle’s Oscar-nominated Whiplash. He also starred...
