In their previous show together, The Sopranos, their characters had a long non-sexual relationship that was fraught with sexual tension, her being a married woman and him being a priest. The episode that delved deepest into their relationship was "College", directed by Allen Coulter, who also directs this episode.

Jackie Peyton: [advising Zoe] I don't like chatty, okay? I don't do chatty. I like quiet. Quiet and mean. Those are my people.

Pilot
Saint or sinner? Nurse Jackie is both. A pill popping addict because she has a had bad back.
She knows more than some of the douche bag doctors. In the opening scene of the pilot, we see an injured cyclist die as the emergency room doctor ignored Nurse Jackie's observations.
Nurse Jackie fakes the dead man's signature so he would be an organ donor. One scummy diplomat will forever wonder what happened to his ear,
This is a black comedy. In some respects the patients that turned up reminded of the kind that used to show up in St Elsewhere or the British hospital drama Cardiac Arrest. One young man had a candle sticking out of him.
Nurse Jackie cares about her patients. Her private life is a mess, we know this when she walks to her home and her husband and kids.
Having seen other episodes, this is not a laugh out loud comedy. More a dramedy and Edie Falco really understands her character.
