It's one of my favorite films of the past few years and Ole Bornedal's Deliver Us From Evil will be hitting Toronto cinema screens starting on October 8th. This is one nasty, gripping piece of work and I cannot recommend it highly enough for all of you Toronto locals.

The animated short film Land Of The Heads, provided by the Nfb, will be playing beforehand.

Montreal, Tuesday August 17th, 2010 - After its Canadian Premiere at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival and its Quebec Premiere at the 2010 Fantasia International Film Festival, Deliver Us From Evil (French title DÉLIVREZ-nous Du Mal, original Danish title Fri Os Fra Det Onde) will finally start its Canadian tour of theatres in Montreal from September 7th at the Quartier Latin Theatre with a French subtitled copy and from September 10th at the AMC Forum Theatre with an English subtitled copy.

The Danger After Dark film festival will host a series of horror and action thrillers at this years event. Included in the line-up are Big Tits Zombie 3-D, The Life and Death of a Porno Gang, RoboGeisha and Ole Bornedal's Dutch language film Fri Os Fra Det Onde (Deliver Us From Evil). The festival begins July 9th and Deliver Us from Evil involves a deadly auto accident and one man's desperate attempt to cover up the crime by blaming another. Apparently the Portuguese love themselves some horror. This year’s Fantasporto film festival, the leading film festival in Portugal, wrapped up its week-long exhibition on March 6th by awarding several new genre films.

The top honors were given to Heartless, a British film from Philip Ridley (The Passion of Darkly Noon) who hadn’t directed a film in fourteen years. The film, which stars Timothy Spall, is a horror-fantasy that follows a man with a mysterious heart-shaped birthmark on his face who discovers demons on the streets of East London.

Not only did Heartless score the award for Best Film, it also took home Best Direction for Ridley, and Best Actor for Jim Sturgess. For those of you lucky enough to live on Ridley’s side of the pond, the wait for this acclaimed film shouldn’t be too prolonged — it will hit UK cinemas on Friday, May 21, and DVD/Blu-ray on Monday,...

Fantasporto 2010, Portugal’s leading film festival, just concluded on March 6th, and not only did the UK's Heartless (review here) receive the Best Film Award, but several other horror films garnered awards as well, including Audience Favorite Solomon Kane.

In addition to being named Best Film, Heartless's Philip Ridley received the Best Direction Award, and its star Jim Sturgess was recognized as the Best Actor.

Heartless is a dark psychological thriller about a young man with a large heart-shaped birthmark on his face who finds himself confronting demons on the streets of East London. Heartless will be in UK cinemas on Friday, 21 May, and on DVD, Blu-ray, and all other formats on Monday, 24 May. No word yet on a Stateside release.

I am at an utter loss when it comes to how to categorize Ole Bornedal’s Deliver Us From Evil (Fri Os Fra Det Onde). Is it a human drama that turns dark and nasty? An unusually nuanced thriller? A cerebral action film? Bornedal had a fantastic one-two punch a couple years back with Vikaren and Just Another Love Story and now it looks like he’s back with something even more potent.

In search of a new lifestyle, Johannes and his wife Pernille leave the city and move with their two children to Johannes’ childhood town in the country. When Johannes’ drunken brother Lars accidently runs over Anna, a local, and plants false evidence pointing at the emigrant Alain, Johannes stands up to defend Alain. But it comes with a price.
