The film has 63 scenes.
The actress Jenia Emmanuelle playing the character Mary-Jane D'Arbanville was supposed to sing David Bowie's song The Man Who Sold the World over a candle-lit dinner but became too drunk on set and passed out over the dinner table. This "live" performance was caught on camera and included in the story.
Some of the long (very long) lines and monologues in this film needed to be said (and read from a diary) all in one go without allowing time for the actor to breathe (breathing was only allowed at the end).
Writing on the Wall has been presented for the first time in 2008 at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in the Film UK section. 2008 was the peak of the Eighties revival and the film is set in the nineties, so the film has been re-scheduled for the nineties revival.
The production started in 2004 and filming started in January 2005. The editing was finally completed in 2010.
