Sci-fi and fantasy shows tend to flourish on television, because the serial structure gives them plenty of space to include expansive world-building. However, the genre often costs a lot of money to put on screen, and studios tend to be hesitant to continue producing a series unless it's a sure success.
Because of that, there are a ton of amazing TV shows that never had the chance to really get off the ground. For every Supernatural and Doctor Who, there are dozens of series that only got a season or two. Even some that got several seasons were hit by unexpected cancellations that made for rushed endings or unfulfilling cliffhangers.
The classic example will always be Firefly, which is held up as the cult classic that could have changed television if it had just been given the chance. But there are many other examples that fans got hooked on, just...

Here's how Marvel Studios transformed Chris Evans into skinny Steve Rogers for Captain America: The First Avenger. Playing a hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe requires actors to be in great physical shape, and Evans was up to the challenge of looking and moving like a superhero throughout his tenure as Captain America. Audiences first saw Evans' superhero transformation in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger.
However, how did they make Steve Rogers look small? While it's more than fair to give Evans credit for his compelling portrayal of the beloved Avenger, Captain America's skinny body double was just as important for Marvel's Captain America transformation. Indeed, Steve Rogers' before-serum appearance was crucial in showing Captain America before and after the effects of the Super Soldier Serum, completing Steve Rogers' journey towards becoming the McU's first super soldier.

There are loads of fantasy TV shows that audiences love for their stellar visual effects and high-quality production value, but there are also many other titles with a low budget that are just as great. The best fantasy TV shows of 2024 demonstrate just how much the genre has grown and changed, but these projects also highlight just how expensive they are to make. Fantasy is such a wide-ranged genre, and when wild and wacky creatures or magic are involved, a lot of behind-the-scenes work is needed.
Even the best animated fantasy TV shows ever are familiar with these struggles. Creating a particular chunk of animation, with all kinds of imagery and detailing, is a lengthy and costly process. However, money isnt everything, and making a good TV show is possible without breaking the bank. Fantasy stories are up to interpretation and rely on the imagination of others, especially for book adaptations,...

The medieval fantasy Netflix series Cursed was canceled after one season, eliminating the possibility of a Cursed season 2. Cursed premiered in July 2020 with a 10-episode first season, but a year passed without any updates, leaving the series' fate unknown. Then, in the aftermath of other cancelations that included four original comedy shows, Cursed also got the ax from Netflix, with its title becoming an ironic self-fulfilling prophecy. In season 1, Nimue (Katherine Langford) is shunned by her Fey village as she's believed to be cursed, but in actuality, Nimue's destined to become the magical Lady of the Lake.
Along the way, Nimue joins forces with a young King Arthur (Devon Terrell) on a quest to find Merlin (Gustaf Skarsgrd) and deliver Excalibur. Basing a show’s success on viewer satisfaction is a tricky proposition.
TV history is rife with bizarre and nonsensical occasions that make sense only within the numbers — sometimes, not even then.
Firefly is a legendary example of this. It had a loyal fanbase and critical acclaim, but Fox nonetheless cut its legs out from under it.
(Helen Sloan/HBO)
There are countless instances of relatively popular programs ending on massive cliffhangers, never to return.
Then there are the shows that audiences hate, yet a new season is in the works each and every year.
There’s a great deal of head-scratching here, so the ultimate answer is yes.
A show can succeed if viewers aren’t satisfied, and for several reasons that make more sense in context. The virulent nature of news, audience vs critical reactions, and, of course, money play their roles.

272 pages/Amulet Books/$24.99
The Arthurian legends wax and wane through the years and 2024 is shaping up to be a year of revival. Specifically, on Tuesday, Lev Grossman’s new novel The Bright Sword, will tell of the days after Camelot fell. It follows the May release of this charming and witty graphic novel, also set in the years after Arthur.
The legend has morphed and changed and been retconned since the first stories were set in print. Some know the tales first from Disney’s 1963 Sword in the Stone and Theodore White’s Once and Future King. Others know it from the BBC young adult series Merlin or, more likely, Monty Python and the Holy Grail or its Broadway adaptation Spamalot. As a result, conflicting details have emerged giving contemporary writers license to be freewheeling with the various sources of material.

Before later movies characterized by their muddy CGI and digital collage of actors, the Marvel Cinematic Universe actually pulled off some cool filmmaking tricks with the help of special effects. Case in point: the puny, pre-serum version of Steve Rogers fans of the then-new series saw in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger." According to The Wrap, the movie achieved Steve's original look via a combination of strategies, and scenes set before his transformation into the Cap we know were actually shot three times.
In one version of the scene, Chris Evans would stand in place and deliver his lines. In another, a scrawnier stand-in — "Atonement" and "Merlin" actor Leander Deeny — would perform in his place. In a third variation, the scene was reportedly filmed without any actor. This gave the effects team tons of footage to work their magic on. While productions typically shoot out of order, The Wrap...

Intimacy coordinators, basically delicate choreographers for sex scenes, are not new to Hollywood productions. But this may be a first.
For the Paramount+ with Showtime limited series “A Gentleman in Moscow,” in which Ewan McGregor plays a Russian aristocrat banished to a bleak hotel room during the early days of the Soviet Union, the actor told Britain’s Radio Times that the production still used an intimacy coordinator for one romantic sequence, even though his scene partner was Mary Elizabeth Winstead, his wife of two years.

Chita Rivera, the sultry singer, dancer and actress who commanded the Broadway stage for more than a half-century, has died. She was 91.
Rivera died peacefully in New York on Tuesday, following a brief illness, her daughter, Lisa Mordente, shared in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.
Known for her long, sleek legs, smoldering green eyes and lusty singing voice, the two-time Tony Award winner originated some of musical theater’s most iconic characters.
When West Side Story bowed in 1957, it was Rivera singing about life in America as the fiery Puerto Rican transplant Anita. As Rose Grant, the long-suffering girlfriend of songwriter Albert Peterson, Rivera received top billing over Dick Van Dyke in 1960’s Bye Bye Birdie. In 1975, she made the stage sizzle with “All That Jazz” as Velma Kelly in Chicago. And the 1993 musical adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman put her in the spotlight as the sexy Spider Woman.

Chita Rivera, the beloved Broadway star of West Side Story, Chicago and Kiss of the Spider Woman, died today in New York following a brief illness. She was 91.
Her death was announced by her daughter, Lisa Mordente, who said that Rivera died peacefully.
One of America’s foremost Latina artists, Rivera was a groundbreaker, riveting critics and audiences alike with seminal performances of such soon-to-be Broadway standards as “America” and “A Boy Like That” from West Side Story and “All That Jazz” from Chicago. She was among the most nominated performers in Tony Award history – she earned 10 nominations, winning twice (for The Rink and Kiss of the Spider Woman) and receiving the 2018 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
Rivera rocketed to fame in 1953 with Guys and Dolls, then cemented her stature as a Broadway leading lady in 1954 with Can-Can, Mr. Wonderful in 1956 and, in 1957, the role that...

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios has just landed a big sci-fi film package it is setting a global theatrical release for in Mercy, starring Chris Pratt, directed by Timur Bekmambetov and produced by Oscar-nominated producer Charles Roven. I understand the deal closed in the past week with a spring start of production planned.
The project puts Pratt back in business with Amazon, which acquired his Skydance movie The Tomorrow War from Paramount and turned into a big Prime Video hit during the pandemic. He also has the series The Terminal List on Prime. The movie also reps a reunion for Pratt and Bekmambetov, who both worked on the latter’s 2008 Hollywood directorial debut Wanted, a $342 million-grossing, Oscar-nominated blockbuster based on Mark Millar’s comic book.
Written by Marco van Belle (Arthur & Merlin), Mercy is set in the near future when capital crime has increased. The pic follows a detective (Pratt) who...

Santiago Cabrera played Captain Cristóbal Rios in the first two seasons of Star Trek: Picard. Since Picard's second season, Cabrera has appeared in various projects such as Godmothered, The Flight Attendant, and Undone, and participated in the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes. Captain Rios is unlikely to return to Star Trek due to his decision to stay in the past and live out his days with Dr. Ramirez and her son.
Santiago Cabrera stars in the first two seasons of Star Trek: Picard as the mysterious Captain Cristóbal (‘Cris’) Rios and his assorted alter-ego holograms. Arthurian adaptations have explored the story and origins of various characters beyond King Arthur, such as Sir Gawain, Morgaine, and Merlin. These adaptations can vary in setting, from medieval times to the modern era, but their purpose is to keep the Arthurian legends alive and thriving. Some innovative adaptations depict King Arthur as a background character rather than the traditional hero, offering fresh perspectives on the familiar story.
King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and Camelot are all the words associated with the greatest genre of medieval literature — Arthurian romance, and naturally, it has been explored in cinema and on television for decades. While King Arthur is generally the hero of the hour, as in Guy Ritchie's box-office disaster King Arthur: Legend of the Sword or Walt Disney's classic The Sword in the Stone, he is not the only fascinating figure in the story. The Winter King finally gets King Arthur right after years of mediocre adaptations, offering a refreshing take on the myth as a historical drama. The show's success with critics breaks a bad streak for Arthurian series, becoming the first since BBC's Merlin to receive a 'Fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Winter King has a fully mapped-out story to work from, unlike Game of Thrones, which suffered from a lack of source material. The show can avoid the rushed storytelling and fan service that plagued Game of Thrones' later seasons, thanks to Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles providing a narrative backbone. While The Winter King has the potential to become a fantasy hit, it faces the challenge of audience burnout and skepticism towards the Arthur legend after previous unsuccessful adaptations. The future of the show will be clearer after the first season.
Parallels are already being drawn between The Winter King and Game of Thrones, but the former has one advantage that HBO's fantasy saga famously lacked. The legend of King Arthur has been explored many times on the big and small screens, from 1981's fantasy epic Excalibur to BBC's Merlin. Many...

The best fantasy series offer a wide range of tones and can cater to a variety of audiences, with elements like swords, sorcery, beat cops, and even animated fantasy. Creative fantasy shows that don't have supernatural love triangles or established fanbases often get overlooked, despite exploring complex issues and featuring engaging characters. There are many underrated fantasy shows that are equally deserving of viewership, such as Lockwood & Co., Willow, BeastMaster, and The Adventures of Merlin, which offer thrilling adventures and captivating storytelling.
While some fantasy shows have made it to mainstream success, others are just as good but more underrated. The best fantasy series are incredibly versatile in terms of their tone and the audiences they can reach. These shows can have swords, sorcery, beat cops, agencies, and even include animated fantasy too, leading to an incredible breadth of content where everyone can find a story to suit their tastes.

In Hogwarts Legacy, you can collect lots of gear during your travels, and some of you will likely be bumping up against their inventory space limits sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t make it obvious how you can increase inventory space, but it is possible. To get more space for gear, you need to complete specific challenges related to the Merlin Trials that can be found scattered throughout the open world.
Before completing these challenges, it’s worth noting that you can still sell unwanted gear in Hogwarts Legacy to free up inventory space and earn some extra Galleons. In addition, once you have obtained a certain piece of gear, you can use Hogwarts Legacy’s transmog feature to change its appearance to match other items, even if those items have been sold or destroyed. As such, you don’t need to worry about juggling stats and fashion sense.

Merlin star Colin Morgan has provided a frank response to calls for a potential series revival. The Umbrella Academy cast in season 3 picked up where season 2 left off. Based on the comic by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy season 3 saw the titular characters returning to the present from the 1960s to discover they have been replaced by the Sparrow Academy, a group of seven children with powers Reginald adopted to train. The Umbrella Academy season 3 introduces a plethora of new characters, though it makes sure not to neglect the main characters. The cast has always been an ensemble and the additional characters have added new dimensions to the Hargreeves.

Witches and wizards will only have a small window to get the Twitch Drops and add the fresh clothes to their own wardrobes.
According to a tweet from the official Hogwarts Legacy account, the Drops entail a stylish Charms Professor set, which is modeled after one of Hogwarts Legacy's best professors, the lovable Abraham Ronen.
Get your wands ready! Grab the Professor Ronen Cosmetic Set by watching Legacy Live! on 5/5 at 9 a.m. Pt, or by watching any streamers playing #HogwartsLegacy with Twitch Drops enabled. To obtain,...

Finishing a long-running show is incredibly difficult, especially with the pressure of fan expectations added to it. That said, some shows just miss the mark with their endings, often because the finale doesn't fulfill the promises that the rest of the show made. Divisive TV show endings have a long history, going back to classic network dramas and television, but in an age of more serialized storytelling, a bad ending especially has the power to invalidate everything that came before it.
When this happens, it's possible for one episode to ruin an entire show and its legacy, keeping fans from rewatching the series or putting their trust in the showrunners again. For those who don't want to start a show just to be disappointed, they could turn to Reddit, where various users discussed the bad TV show endings that ruined their love for a show, and what made them so bad.

In Hogwarts Legacy’s Well, Well, Well quest, players can follow a map to hidden treasure by offering aid to a magical talking well. This is undoubtedly one of the strangest side quests players can complete in Hogwarts Legacy, and one that players are likely to have missed, as its starting location is far off the beaten path. After obtaining the treasure map, players must figure out where exactly they can find a hidden treasure based on cryptic clues and drawings that point to a specific location out in the open world.
Players may already have tracked down Hogwarts Legacy’s Cursed Tomb Treasure by deciphering clues on a similar treasure map. Finding The Well's Treasure is a little easier, as players don’t need to prepare to fight dangerous critters or Inferi. Despite that, it can be difficult to actually find the map to start this quest, and even then,...
