It's been over 20 years since Renee Zellweger had us at "Hello," and so much has changed for the actress. Since her breakout role in Jerry Maguire she has solidified her spot on the A-list and her name has become more synonymous with rom-coms than Bridget Jones herself. But Zellweger has also had a somewhat complicated relationship with her own fame. The 2010s were a banner decade for the actress—she starred in Chicago, kicked off the Bridget Jones' Diary franchise, won an Oscar for Cold Mountain and was nominated for two others. But by the end of the decade she gave it all up. After starring in My Own Love Song opposite Forest Whitaker,...

It has been six years since Renée Zellweger has appeared in a feature film — 2010’s “My Own Love Song” — and even longer since it was one that you actually saw. However, the actress is blazing a comeback trail. Next month she returns in “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” she’s got the Keanu Reeves legal thriller “The […]

You might not have noticed, but Renee Zellweger hasn’t been seen on the big screen since her performance in 2010’s My Own Love Song. Which itself was hardly seen by anyone. Her self-imposed hiatus is finally coming to an end in 2016, though. But why did she decide to take such a lengthy break? She was fed up with the sound of her own voice. Renee Zellweger made this admission while talking to Vogue, the cover of which she’s emblazoned on this month. The 47-year-old actress admitted that she became so fed up of hearing herself on-screen that she decided to take a break from acting so that she could recuperate. Renee Zellweger explained: I got sick of the sound of my own voice. It was time to go away and grow up a bit. It’s hardly surprising that Renee Zellweger decided to take ...

Don't call it a comeback. Renée Zellweger looks poised in Prada on the cover of British Vogue's July issue, the first of many profiles in support of Bridget Jones's Baby. It's the first time Zellweger has had a project to promote since 2010, when My Own Love Song was released in theaters. For more than half a decade, Zellweger, 47, has eschewed the spotlight, save for red carpet appearance here or there. Her disappearance baffled many. After all, they wondered, why would she turn her back on an industry that gave her an Oscar and paid her a reported $15 million a movie? Well, to be frank, fame and riches were never why Zellweger got into show business. "As a creative person, saying no to that wonderful...

Renée Zellweger is returning to the spotlight in a major way. After taking a six-year hiatus from Hollywood, the 47-year-old actress appears on the cover of British Vogue's July issue. Photographed by Patrick Demarchelier, it marks the first time she's been so prominently featured in the magazine—and it also ushers in her return to the limelight. So, where has the Oscar winner been all these years? After the movie My Own Love Song was released in 2010, Zellweger—one of the most bankable and beloved actresses of her generation—went off the grid. She tried her best to "live a normal life," as they say, which proved easier said than done. Zellweger made continued to make...

The Isa of the Day segment of SydneysBuzz resumes for the Cannes Film Festival 2015. ISAs, or International Sales Agents, help to bring films into global distribution by selling distribution rights to distributors worldwide.Topics include new trends in distribution and sales, inspirational success stories, film slates and more. A worthy read for any serious filmmaker looking to have a better understanding of the chain of business between producing a film and sharing it with the world.
Kinology was founded by its Managing Director, Grégoire Melin in May 2008. This newly created sales entity represents some of the most ambitious and innovative European feature films starring international talent such as Jean-Francois Richet’s hit Public Enemy Number One, Olivier Dahan’s My Own Love Song, and Mathieu Kassovitz’s Rebellion.
Founder & President of Kinology Grégoire Melin shares more:
The company was created seven years ago, right before Cannes 2008.
I started EuropaCorp with Luc Besson and Pierre Olange, a talented marketing person and now producer. I was in charge of international sales there, which was great because I worked on all these big franchises like Transformers and Taken, among many others. I worked on about 60 films while I was there.
Europa was fantastic, and I’ll never be able to thank Luc and Pierre enough for all the opportunities they’ve given me to meet great people and great directors, but there comes a moment when it gets hard to sell the films you didn’t choose yourself. That is why I created my company, Kinology.
Gaellle Mareschi, head of International Sales & Development, is also coming from Europa ( she worked there after I left) and joined me in 2010. Since then, we have been working together and are the only two sales agents.
We work on 5-7 films a year, and it’s difficult to say which kind of projects we are choosing, because we work on concept films. For example, the first film which was very successful for us was “Buried”. We loved the script and immediately signed on the film long before it was shot. In Europe, it’s not financiers financing the film and then they are looking for a sales agent. It’s much more that the sales agents take the risk with the equity for the film in the beginning.
We’ve done many films like “Days of Grace”, “Heartbreaker”, and “Spring Breakers”. Again, these are very eclectic but very concept-driven films. We don’t care whether it’s English or French. We were also the sales agent on “A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night”. We love to launch unique visions with new or unique directors, and if I don’t think a film is right for us, I will not take it.
We love the distributors we are working with. I love this job, and going to market is really exciting because we know we are going to get countless meetings with people we love. We are also very hands-on when it comes to marketing.
Now we’re working on Terry Gilliam’s Don Quixote, and just came back from Spain after working with Terry – we aim to start shooting the film in August. This is an example of how we are very hands-on and try to really support the producers we are working with. Since we are working on very few films, it gives us time to go really in-depth. We know everything about the films, every crew person, every element, and are very close to the projects.
We don’t usually have that many films in Cannes, but this year we have films we really adore. Both are premiering at the festival. One is called “Mustang”, and we have a fantastic animation film that is winning prizes all around the world called “Mune” by Alexandre Heboyan.

Yes, this is really Renee Zellweger.
It's safe to say Renee Zellweger's looking a little different these days.
The 45-year-old actress made an appearance at Elle's 21st Annual Women In Hollywood Celebration in Beverly Hills, Calif. Monday night, and her nearly unrecognizable appearance is shocking to say the least.
No, your eyes are not deceiving you -- this really is what the Bridget Jones' Diary star currently looks like.

Though many speculate that Renee's new look is the result of plastic surgery -- pointing to her completely wrinkle-free face -- she has never addressed the reports.
She has, however, commented on the criticism that she's too thin.
"When you read reports that you are starving yourself or that you are anorexic it's very unfair and disappointing," she told the U.K.'s Daily Express last November. "It's not very pleasant to read reports which say you've gone too far or...

It's been an up-and-down journey for "Grace of Monaco," the Nicole Kidman-starring biopic of Grace Kelly that was originally set to open last year. Negative buzz circled the European co-production following that delay, as word spread of intense friction between The Weinstein Company and French director Olivier Dahan over the edit of the film. "Grace" seemed to have been granted a reprieve when it was announced as this year's Cannes Film Festival opener -- not a guarantee of quality, of course, but a helpful publicity boost. Now, however, the film's fate once more appears uncertain, as Variety reports that Harvey Weinstein is considering relinquishing the Us distribution rights to the film ahead of its Cannes premiere -- with the company having omitted the title from recent press releases about their Cannes slate. Weinstein is said to still be unhappy with Dahan's edit of the film, which the mogul believes...

I don.t know if you.re aware of this or not, but Renee Zellweger stopped acting. She churned out roles on the regular for almost two decades and then abruptly stopped. She hasn.t made a picture since 2010.s forgettable My Own Love Song, but that now seems poised to change thanks to her interest in a new project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zellweger is in advanced negotiations to join the indie drama The Whole Truth. The work will be directed by Courtney Hunt. The screenplay will be written by Nicholas Kazan, and apart from Zellweger, if she officially boards, it will star Daniel Craig. As of now, the plot isn.t being discussed publically, but it.s generally being described as a courtroom drama, with the James Bond actor allegedly playing the district attorney. During the mid-to-late 90s and early 2000s, Zellweger was among the biggest female...

Renée Zellweger is in talks to join Daniel Craig in courtroom drama The Whole Truth.
The Courtney Hunt-directed indie project is to be written by Nicholas Kazan (Matilda, Bicentennial Man) and produced by Richard Suckle.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Craig signed on to the film in late January, with the Chicago star joining discussions more recently.
The plot has been described as a "courtroom thriller", with Craig expected to play a district attorney in the drama.
The project would mark Zellweger's first film role since 2010's My Own Love Song.

Renee Zellweger thinks she can handle "The Whole Truth."
The Oscar winner is in talks to star opposite Daniel Craig in the courtroom thriller "The Whole Truth," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This would be Zellweger's first movie in four years. Perhaps "The Whole Truth," an indie directed by Courtney Hunt ("Frozen River"), can help revive her once-acclaimed career. In the early 2000s, the actress enjoyed many critical and commercial successes, from "Jerry Maguire" to "Chicago" to the "Bridget Jones Diary" movies. And she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for "Cold Mountain" in 2004.
But then Zellweger appeared in a string of unmemorable duds, like "New in Town" and "Leatherheads." Her last film, 2010's "My Own Love Song," was a flop that went straight to DVD.
Choosing the indie route could be a smart strategy for the 44-year-old. Hey, look what it did for her former "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" co-star,...

It's Julien your French correspondent to pass a bit of a contentious interview your way. After tampering with the ending of August: Osage Country and cutting 20 minutes off Snowpiercer, it seems Harvey Scissorhands is at it again. Grace of Monaco director Olivier Diahan spoke to French newspaper Libération (in an article published today) about his ongoing feud with Weinstein.
The disagreement is apparently the cause of the film's delay:
What’s complicated right now is to make sure that the critics will be able to judge my own version of the film, and not another one. But it’s not over yet, I haven’t given up. (…) There are two versions of the film: mine and his… which I found catastrophic.”
Quite a strong assessment from the guy who directed My Own Love Song, wouldn’t you say?...

French filmmaker tells Liberation newspaper there are two versions of Grace of Monaco - “his and mine”.
French filmmaker Olivier Dahan has hit out at Us distributor Harvey Weinstein over his decision to re-edit his cut of Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman as the tragic actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly, ahead of its Us release next year.
“The film that I am in the process of finishing is complicated to finalise although actually for me it is finished,” Dahan said in an interview with French newspaper Liberation.
“What’s complicated at the moment is ensuring that you, the critics, can review my version of the film and not that of somebody else. It’s not over yet. I haven’t given up.”
The Weinstein Company announced in September that it was pushing back the Us release of Grace of Monaco to spring 2014 from the previously expected Nov 2013, thus excluding the picture from this year’s Oscar race.

Update: Even though Helen Fielding's third book in the Bridget Jones trilogy, "Mad About the Boy," has seen huge first-day sales in the UK (and went on sale stateside October 15), neither Universal nor Working Title have snapped up film rights. (Working Title released the first "Bridget Jones" movie, and Universal the sequel, both worldwide hits.) So what does this mean for poor Bridget, now 51, a mother of two, and gloomy in the shadow of Mark Darcy's death via landmine? THR posits that Renee Zellweger's star has faded (her last film, 2010's "My Own Love Song," didn't receive Us distribution), and that Fielding's busy schedule with the book's imminent release in multiple territories has stalled the possibility of a film adaptation for the time being. Also complicating matters is Fielding's original screenplay, "Bridget Jones' Baby," obviously set before "Mad About the Boy," which would reunite Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant.

With critically celebrated comedy hits like Bridget Jones's Diary and Chicago and earnest Oscar-courting dramas like Cold Mountain and Cinderella Man, Renée Zellweger was everywhere in the early 2000s. Yet the last few years, the bubbly blonde leading lady has largely been absent from the spotlight, making her last movie appearance in 2010's My Own Love Song, a dramedy that went straight to DVD Stateside. But now Zellweger is taking her comeback into her own hands with 4 ½ Minutes. Deadline reports Zellweger has not only committed to front the comedy that's set in the thick of New York City's stand-up comedy community, but also will make her directorial debut with the film. Jackass's Johnny Knoxville will play the movie's hero, a struggling comic who is forced to take a job as a nanny, looking after the genius son of Zelwegger's single-mom character. The released logline also mentions Knoxville's stand-up is...

Bridget Jones actor to direct and star in film reportedly based on experiences of real-life standup comedian Dov Davidoff
Bridget Jones star Renée Zellweger is to make her feature-directing debut with the comedy-circuit yarn 4 1/2 Minutes. She will also act in the film, alongside Johnny Knoxville, who will take the lead role of a messed-up comedian who has to look after her character's son. The script will be written by Anthony Tambakis, and is apparently based on the experiences of real-life standup Dov Davidoff.
Zellweger has been increasingly moving into behind-camera duties in recent months. She and Tambakis are sharing writing credits on a TV series, Cinnamon Girl, which received an order from the Lifetime channel in July. She is also still attached to star in Bridget Jones's Baby, the third movie in the series, but according to reports the project is on hold indefinitely.
Other major roles appear to be thin on the ground.

Tim Roth has been cast as Prince Rainier III to Nicole Kidman's Grace Kelly in Grace of Monaco from French director Olivier Dahan (La Vie en Rose, My Own Love Song). Rainier began his rule of Monaco in his mid-twenties, eventually marrying Oscar winner Kelly. The film details Kelly in her sixth year as princess, and Frank Langella is in talks to play the priest and adviser who sets up the regal pair.

Grace Kelly, star of Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, and High Noon, is an icon of Hollywood cinema, so stepping into her shoes will require a certain amount of boldness. Hopefully Nicole Kidman has what it takes since she's in talks to play the actress-turned-princess in the new film Grace of Monaco. Now, before anyone complains about "another biopic," the story will only focus on a six-month period in 1962 when Kelly, in her relatively new role as princess, worked behind the scenes to avoid a coup in Monaco when it "got into a heated dispute with France, which grew tired of the petite principality being a tax haven." The film is being developed as a lower budget project that's described in tone as being similar to The King's Speech. So, with a period setting, a popular public figure, some political issues, and a current A-list actress potentially involved, does this movie smell like Oscar-bait,...

Is the swanlike Nicole Kidman the perfect pick to play Grace Kelly, the glamorous movie star turned Princess of Monaco? C'est possible!
It looks like she's the top pick for the highly coveted starring role in "Grace of Monaco," which will be directed by Olivier Dahan of "La vie en rose" fame.
"Grace of Monaco" isn't a biopic of the "Rear Window" star per se; instead, it focuses on a specific period of time after she's taken on the title of Princess of Monaco.
According to the story, Kelly got involved in some surreptitious political monkey biz to stop a coup after the fabulous but crucial port got into a major tiff with France.

Nicole Kidman: Really stocking up on roles this year! She eyed Before I Go to Sleep and landed The Railway Man in the span of a few days about a month ago, she already has Lee Daniels's The Paperboy and Chan-wook Park's Stoker going, and now she's in talks to join Grace of Monaco from French director Olivier Dahan (2007's La Vie en Rose, 2009's My Own Love Song). The film, which comes from a script that showed up on 2011's Black List, centers around Grace Kelly in her sixth year as princess of Monaco. "Nearly every top actress in Hollywood chased the demanding yet coveted role," Variety writes. Now we want to know who lost out to Kidman.

The country music drama has had a bit of mixed history of late. "Walk the Line" and "Crazy Heart" were popular box office and Oscar-winning hits while "Country Strong" and "My Own Love Song" tanked pretty hard. It's a tricky mix, creating an inspirational story that feels genuine, and when they don't, they feel as phony as a daytime soap opera. But "Walk the Line" producer James Keach thinks he's found a tale of a country legend worth telling and we're inclined to agree. Spinner reveals that Keach has signed on to develop a movie about the legendary Glen Campbell.…...

The writer/director of the great French film La Vie En Rose takes a crack at an American story set in the South about a wheelchair-bound country singer and her best friend. It’s got an amazing cast and even features original music by American music legend Bob Dylan. Surely, this is a film to be celebrated, considering all the pieces it has making up the whole. Sadly, Olivier Dahan appears to be out of his element in this film and instead has made something akin to a made-for-television Lifetime Channel film instead of a quality drama.

Here's how Hollywood works. If an idea is really good and works one time, it means it will be repeated endlessly in a never-ending hope to match that first glory. So, when Jeff Bridges and "Crazy Heart" stormed the award season in 2009, it was no surprise that a transparent attempt was made to do that again and thus "Country Strong" with Gwyneth Paltrow and "My Own Love Song" with Renée Zellweger were foisted upon a movie-going audience that had been there and done that. Shana Feste directed the former and while at point (far in the distance) it was…...

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. The Green Hornet (Blu-ray available as single-disc and Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD Combo) The Green Hornet is a complete mess. Michel Gondry may be credited as its director, but it plays far more like a Seth Rogen comedy, with only occasional opportunities afforded to Gondry to inject his off-the-wall visual flourishes. Had Gondry and Rogen shared a more consistent overarching vision, the film might've been something special, but as it stands the story is too clumsy and shapeless to satisfyingly coalesce as a whole. And yet, I greatly enjoyed watching it. For all its faults, Rogen's self-aware spin on the superhero genre overcomes its lack of narrative momentum by never running out of amusing conceits to play...

Smiles of a Summer Night (Criterion Collection) I was going to try and finish watching this one before posting this week's titles, but it just ended up getting too late so I will return to it tomorrow and post a full review. I, however, am still going to lead with it because it is still an Ingmar Bergman film and I am a decided fan of Bergman, particularly Persona, The Seventh Seal, The Virgin Spring and one film I really want Criterion to issue on Blu-ray, if only for Sven Nykvist's cinematography, Fanny and Alexander. I'll have more on this title soon enough. The Green Hornet The quote on the cover of the 3D Blu-ray edition is rather comical as it says "Amazing 3D." My Own Love Song, the 2010 road movie comedy-drama starring Renee Zellweger (Case 39) and Forest Whitaker (Repo Men) comes to Blu-ray and DVD on May 3 from Inception Media.
Renee Zellweger and Forest Whitaker carry the tune in My Own Love Song.
Written and directed by French artist and filmmaker Olivier Dahan (La Vie en Rose), My Own Love Song tells the story of wheelchair-bound singer Jane (Zellweger) and her mentally unstable best friend Joey as they set out on a cross-country in search of redemption, self-discovery and courage—you know, all those things one sets out to “find” when taking to the highway on an extended road trip.
The movie also stars Nick Nolte (TV’s Rich Man, Poor Man) and Madeline Zima (TV’s Heroes).

You’ve just got to admire Forest Whitaker. He doesn’t have what we would call “movie star” looks, but the guy works A Lot! Movies, TV, shadow puppets, whatever . If there’s a camera he’s in front of it.
So with that in mind here’s the trailer for his latest film My Own Love Song in which he co-stars with Renee Zellweger and Nick Nolte. However the film, which was directed by French filmmaker Olivier Dahan who directed 2007 film La Vie en Rose about Edith Piaf ,didn’t find an U.S. distributor and is coming out instead on DVD on May 3rd. Yeah I know it looks kind of sappy and that Whitaker is playing yet another “Magic Negro” part, albeit one who’s kind of loony, but like I said he’s working.

Best known for directing Marion Cotillard to worldwide fame and an Oscar win in "La Vie En Rose," director Olivier Dahan has lined up his project and unlike his latest effort--the largely forgotten country music drama "My Own Love Song" which is heading straight-to-dvd--he's getting out of the music world and stepping into sports instead. Tout Le Cine reports that an ensemble cast including José Garcia, Gad Elmaleh (who will be seen in Woody Allen's "Midnight In Paris"), Ramzy Bedia, Franck Dubosc, Omar Sy, Joey Starr and Jean-Pierre Marielle have been assembled for the soccer comedy "Les Seigneurs." A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Bitter Feast"
Directed by Joe Maggio
Released by Mpi Home Video
When a food critic ("Humpday"'s Justin Leonard) takes a butcher knife to the restaurant of a celebrity chef (James LeGros), the chef plots the ultimate revenge in this gory satirical thriller from director Joe Maggio. (My review from the Los Angeles Film Festival is here.)
"Case 39"
Directed by Christian Alvart
Released by Paramount
2010 is probably a year best forgotten by Renee Zellweger, who not only appeared in the execrable "My Own Love Song," which went straight to Netflix, but also this thriller that was filmed in 2006, but didn't see a release until last fall. Zellweger stars as a social worker whose latest case involving a child (Jodelle Ferland) that she believes is a victim of abuse leads to something far more terrifying. Bradley Cooper and Ian McShane co-star.

Negative Buzzwords: Overrated, vanity, recluse
The Case: Today's surveillance involves the Magically Disappearing Career of Renée Zellweger. Not too terribly many years ago, this subject was an imminently employable actress who possessed an everyday, realistic good looks. Of course, that was back when Zellweger began her acting career with low budget productions (Love and a .45, The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre) in her home state of Texas. After moving to Hollywood, Zellweger parlayed her unusual physical appeal by banging Rex Manning in Empire Records. Then, she had us at "hello" in Jerry Maguire and, subsequently, showcased some refreshing versatility in A Price Above Rubies. As to that last movie, I recall watching a "Today Show" interview, which posed the question of why a starlet would bother with a "small" film...
