Thomas Benski, the former Pulse Films boss who recently unveiled Carousel Studios with Omar Sy and Louis Letterier, has launched talent and IP banner Lumina. Based in London, New York, Paris and Los Angeles, the new venture claims to have been “built to support and grow companies in the modern media and consumer landscape where talent, IP and brand are the multipliers,” and comes with a first-round of funding in the “mid-eight figures.”

Lumina says it will focus on talent-driven studios, production, kids and family content, plus consumer brands. Lumina has already partnered with Carrousel Studios, as well as with Yann Demange’s Wayward Films. On the kids and family side, Lumina is backing gaming studio Creators Corp. and the kids IP business Strike. Its consumer division has backed brands including Metie and Daaci, with its Lumina’s will include a “multi-disciplinary” film studio, Magna Studios, headed...

Former Pulse Films CEO Thomas Benski has launched an international media group called Lumina, based in London, New York, Paris and Los Angeles.

Lumina says it is backed to the tune of ‘mid-eight figures’ via a first funding round from investors including Magnus Rausing’s Bfk, Charles Dorfman’s Dorfman Media Holdings and Svs Holdings.

It describes itself as a “well-capitalised talent and IP-led media group and venture firm uniquely built to support and grow companies.”

The New York City-based theater has announced a “Nicolas Uncaged” festival to honor the acclaimed star. The 10-film retrospective opens November 8 at Metrograph In Theater, and will feature 35mm showings of “Con Air,” “Moonstruck,” “The Wicker Man,” and “Wild at Heart.”

“Heaped with praise and panegyrics as one of the finest screen actors of his generation, pilloried and parodied as an anything-for-a-paycheck hambone with a weakness for weird wigs and prostheses, Nicolas Cage is a one-man sideshow, a mixture of Marlon Brando, Robert Mitchum, Lon Chaney, and a stick of TNT who takes back ‘serious thespian’ prestige whenever he wants to, dives into grindhouse material and Academy Award hopefuls with the same mad enthusiasm, and never seems to be having anything less than a total blast in front of the camera,” the Metrograph press statement reads.

Recently, director Quentin Tarantino praised the much-maligned direct-to-video Bruce Willis films on his Video Archives Podcast. “I was really impressed by Bruce Willis in these movies,” he said. “I thought he was really charming in them. He’s really fun.” The director admitted that it was obvious that Willis was operating with an earpiece. “You can never have a scene where he says a line, somebody else says a line, and he says a line back,” he explained. “You’re getting one line out of him at a time, so there’s always a cut. But he’s making it work. He’s not phoning in his performances.“

Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw star in the spy thriller series Black Doves, heading to Netflix in December. Here’s the trailer.

Keira Knightley’s latest project is the Netflix spy thriller series Black Doves, which is set at Christmas in London. Netflix has already ordered a second series, such is its level of confidence.

The cast also includes Andrew Buchan, Kathryn Hunter, Sam Troughton, Ella Lily Hyland, Adam Silver, Ken Nwosu, Gabrielle Creevy and Omari Douglas.

The show, due to stream as we’re all opening our Peppa Pig advent calendars in December, is written by Joe Barton, who also wrote the terrific BBC series Giri/Haji.

In Michael Samoski's 2021 drama "Pig," Nicolas Cage plays a quiet, bearded recluse named Rob Feld who lives in a remote woodland cabin with his unnamed pet pig. The pig is a skilled truffle forager, and Rob makes a living selling truffles to a restaurant supplier (Alex Wolff) who occasionally drives out to his cabin. Rob clearly has a dark past, but has seemingly found peace in the woods. One night, however, Rob is attacked, and his pig is stolen. Rob has to trek into nearby Portland to retrieve his animal friend, and, we learn, confront his past.

As the film progresses, we discover that Rob had unusual connections in the world of Portland's high-end restaurateurs, and that he participated in eatery-related underground fighting rings (!). Not every movie delivers on what audiences thought would be its premise or tone. Sometimes, a movie's press tour and marketing campaign will tell audiences exactly what they have to know before they go to the cinema. However, it is also often the case that these campaigns can shape audience expectations in a way that doesn't align with what the movie itself provides. Sometimes this can be deliberate in an attempt to shock audiences with a twist, while other times it feels as if the marketing didn't quite match the tone of the project.

Whether that is through unexpected plot twists, subversions of a genre, or dramatic shifts in tone, many movies have come to defy what audiences expected. These marketing campaigns concealed the true nature of the movie, often with mixed results. Sometimes these tonal changes pay off, but other times audiences may feel disappointed by what they thought they were going to see.

Our top pick this week is five-time Academy Award nominee Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy “Kinds of Kindness,” which is now streaming on Hulu. It’s Lanthimos’ third collaboration with Emma Stone, after “The Favourite” and “Poor Things.” It’s unlikely to make as strong a showing at the Academy Awards as those two, but that’s pretty much by design, as the film’s anthology structure and darkly absurdist tone make it not the kind of thing that wins Oscars. Jesse Plemons did win Best Actor at Cannes, though, so he could be a longshot contender in that category, especially at the Golden Globes.

The film consists of three loosely connected stories about people experiencing various forms of severe distress. In addition to Stone and Plemons, the cast includes Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, and Mamadou Athie.

Paramount+ announced on Monday that A Quiet Place: Day One, the third film in the A Quiet Place horror franchise which examines the day the world went silent, is set to begin streaming exclusively on the service in the U.S. and Canada on Tuesday, August 27.

The critically acclaimed Paramount title’s availability in additional international markets will be announced at a later date. Directed by Pig‘s Michael Sarnoski, and starring Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther films) and Joseph Quinn (Gladiator II), it hits streaming following a late June theatrical release which saw the film open to nearly $100 million worldwide, in a franchise best.
