“I’m not a fan,” snaps Matthew, the master manipulator in the guise of a harmless nobody eager to soak up some of the refracted rays of celebrity in Lurker. Once he has penetrated the inner circle of emerging pop star Oliver, a fan is the most insulting thing you could call him. Proximity gives Matthew — played by Théodore Pellerin with an evil innocence from which you can’t look away — the illusion of being a best friend, a bro, a creative collaborator to the mononymous singer. Everyone in his entourage wants to bask in Oliver’s glow, but nobody wants it as badly as Matt.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent cast and character guide. Directed by Tom Gormican from a screenplay by him and Kevin Etten, the film breaks the fourth wall by having Nicolas Cage portraying a fictional version of himself — Nick Cage, an actor who can no longer land a major studio role and is in a lot of debt despite having starred in blockbusters like National Treasure. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a rare movie wherein an actor playing a version of themselves works on many levels.
The plot combines various genres and leans quite a bit into the buddy comedy aspect. It’s unclear where Gormican and Etten may have gotten the idea for the movie, but Cage certainly has no issue spoofing parts of his career and making meta jokes about the films he’s made and the movie industry at large. Nicolas Cage is joined by a fantastic cast,...

As the actor's resurgence continues, a recent Nicolas Cage hit is finding a new streaming home. Even before landing his Oscar win for Leaving Las Vegas, the actor had made a name for himself in the '80s with leading roles in everything from the teen romantic comedy Valley Girl to the Coen brothers' Raising Arizona. He would solidify himself as a household name with his work in the action genre throughout the '90s and 2000s, including Michael Bay's The Rock, John Woo's Face/Off and the National Treasure franchise.
For the majority of the 2010s, Cage infamously became better known for his work in critically panned direct-to-video movies, which he has since explained stemmed from encountering financial problems and taking on as many projects as possible to make up for it. He would begin to enjoy a career resurgence with the 2018 psychedelic horror movie Mandy and the crime drama Pig,...

Osamu Tezuka reshaped Japanese pop culture with his manga "Astro Boy." In a future world, Japanese science minister Dr. Tenma loses his son Tobio in a car accident. He recreates Tobio as an android, Astro (known as Atom in the original Japanese). The manga is a futuristic reimagining of "Pinocchio" that becomes a superhero story.
You can trace Japan's love affair with robots to "Astro Boy" — modern mecha and shonen manga/anime wouldn't exist without it. Despite being foundational in Japan, Astro Boy isn't much of an icon in the United States. One attempt to import him, a 2009 CGI animated "Astro Boy" picture from Imagi Animation Studios, failed and left Imagi underwater.
Imagi was founded in Hong Kong in 2000, first producing the 2002 CGI cartoon series "Zentrix." In 2007, they secured a three-picture distribution deal with Warner Bros — the first fruit of that deal was the 2007 animated "Tmnt" film. "Tmnt" was a success,...

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, the first-ever fully animated film based on the Looney Tunes characters, which hit U.S. theaters Dec. 13, almost didn’t happen. Several times.
“At least three, four times during the production I was waiting for that phone call [to shut down the movie],” says director Peter Browngardt. “It was a rocky journey.”
That’s putting it mildly. Browngardt was brought on in mid-2021 to produce and direct The Day the Earth Blew Up as his feature debut. Browngardt was a writer on the popular, and critically acclaimed, HBO Max Looney Tunes reboot, a series of new original shorts featuring the classic Tunes characters which seemed to prove there was an audience out there for more Looney. Browngardt and his writing team — some 15 writers and story consultants are credited on the movie — came up with an original idea involving Daffy Duck and Porky Pig uncovering a...

Anyone who was depressed to see “Coyote v. Acme” scrapped from the Warner Bros. release calendar should take solace in the news that there’s still another Looney Tunes adventure coming to the big screen. Daffy Duck and Porky Pig are set to team up in “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” which opens in February 2025 after an Oscar-qualifying run this month.
The film, which was produced by Warner Bros. Animation before selling to Ketchup Entertainment, generated major excitement among animation fans following its premiere at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Festival. If it succeeds at the box office, it could be seen as more evidence that the audience for a film like “Coyote v. Acme” exists among the moviegoing public.

A Nicolas Cage movie with a 62% Rotten Tomatoes score receives a glowing review from a mafia expert. Cage began his career in the 1980s by appearing in films such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Rumble Fish, and Moonstruck. Cage won the Academy Award for Best Actor in recognition of his starring role in 1995's Leaving Las Vegas, which is widely considered Nicolas Cage's best 1990s' movie. The 1990s also saw Cage starring in several action movies, including The Rock, Con Air, and Face/Off.
The quality and reception of his movies varied significantly through the 2000s and 2010s, ranging from the popular National Treasure films to the critically panned Ghost Rider movies. The perception surrounding Cage and his movies began to change in more recent years, especially with his performances in Pig, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and Longlegs all garnering critical acclaim. Since making his acting debut in 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," Nicolas Cage has gone on to amass an astounding filmography that has never stopped evolving. He's admittedly made some baffling choices as an actor, starring in the infamously terrible "Deadfall" (which has a zero rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and the 2019 dud "Grand Isle," whose flaws have more to do with its storytelling than Cage's performance as a haunted war veteran. Really, we would be here all day if I were to list the scores of middling-to-awful straight-to-video flicks Cage has starred in, yet the actor never, ever phones it in and shows up to every role with an intensity that is tough to match.
Being one of those actors who shines brighter than ever when given layered, intriguing roles to work with, Cage has delivered several unforgettable performances worth rooting for. For starters, we have the lesser-known...

The ending of the 2021 Nicolas Cage movie Pig explained its core objective of subverting viewers expectations by rejecting any violent conflict and, consequently, a conventional climax. The story of Pig could have gone down the John Wick path as Rob (Cage), a retired chef living in the depths of the Oregon forest, sets out to the city in search of his beloved companion a pig, stolen by violent delinquents. However, instead of finishing on a violent crescendo, Pig offers a relevant anti-revenge message and comes full circle by the end as Rob accepts his grief without retaliating.
In the end, Rob doesnt get his pig back, and his enemies get away, but thats irrelevant when compared to Pig's real purpose: learning to make peace with the past. Pig was one of the best movies of 2021, although it requires patience from the audience. After Rob's pig is stolen, the film takes...

Plot: Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and Petunia Pig are Earth’s only hope when facing the threat of alien invasion.
Review: During a time when moral compasses are pointing anywhere but up, and on a day when you find your credit card is beyond its limit, it sure is nice to feel like a kid again. Few things could bring me back to when Sesame Street’s “12 and Pinball” animation was the hottest jam of the Summer, like Looney Tunes. Every morning, and sometimes on Saturdays, Bugs, Daffy, Porky Pig, and their eclectic cast of friends molded my sense of humor, gave me a fondness for classical music, and invited sunshine into even the rainiest days.
I lost my mind when I heard Daffy Duck and Porky Pig would reunite for an unconventional 2D Looney Tunes movie. The news helped lick the wounds of losing the shelved Coyote vs. Acme,...

From playing Leonard Cohen to a conflicted frat boy, Alex Wolff’s recent on-screen roles span life on idyllic Greek islands to toxic college parties. Next up is his second directing effort, If She Burns.
“I didn’t realize how much of a razor’s edge I was walking when I was making the movie, but I really feel it when I watch it,” Wolff tells Deadline about playing Tom Backster in Ethan Berger’s The Line. The film portrays the outsized power and privilege wielded by a fictional fraternity, Kappa Nu Alpha, and the accompanying web of friendships and hazing. Wolff’s Tom, unlike his fraternity brothers, is not from money and is both intoxicated and horrified by the world he inhabits.
Walking the line here meant bringing empathy to a character who is part of a group that behaves awfully. Wolff says: “It’s always a scene or...

The genre of horror films has been around for a very long time. Despite shocking and frightening audiences, this genre is very popular, and some filmmakers have made a living by creating horror films, especially after Alfred Hitchcock took the genre to new heights.
Wes Craven, John Carpenter, and George Romero are regarded as classics, but there are also a number of up-and-coming filmmakers who want to make a career in the genre.
One of them is Drew Hancock, whose upcoming sci-fi horror Companion is set to be released early next year, although we’ve just received news that the movie is being pushed back, although not by much.
As Bloody Disgusting reports, Companion has been pushed back from its initial January 10 release date, but it is still going to air in the same month, so everyone who’s expecting to see this movie won’t have to wait much...

Quentin Tarantino is a man of his own choice, liking whatever appeases him and praising it unhesitatingly, and bashing whatever displeases him and lashing out at it unwaveringly without even fearing the outcome. That said, his choices – especially regarding the entertainment industry’s pieces, in particular – stand out as much as his extraordinarily remarkable personality as well.

For one, he praised the critically commended 2021 thriller masterpiece from Nicolas Cage, Pig, for simply blowing him away. This acclamation is understandable, sure, considering how the film blew many others away, too. At the same time, what most fans are failing to relate to is Tarantino’s love for Harrison Ford’s worst Indiana Jones film: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Quentin Tarantino picks his favorite Nicolas Cage movie of the last five years, and it's the perfect choice. Tarantino is one of the most influential and accomplished auteurs of his generation, having written and directed nine feature films, winning two Academy Awards, with a tenth and final film on the way. In addition to being an accomplished auteur, Tarantino is also a serious cinephile who frequently shares his unfiltered opinions on film, recently praising the critically-panned Joker: Folie Deux and revealing that he refuses to watch Denis Villeneuve's Dune movies.
Now, on his Video Archives Podcast (via JoBlo), Tarantino revealed one of his favorite Nicolas Cage movies of the last few years Pig. The director says it's one of the actor's best movies of the last five years, and went on to suggest it's also one of the best movies he's seen in the last five years. Read his...

Nicolas Cage is one of America’s greatest movie stars, and certainly its most distinctive one. His singular genius will be the subject of a retrospective festival at Metrograph, the wonderful independent movie theater in New York City.
IndieWire reports that “Nicolas Uncaged” will present 35mm showings of 10 of Cage’s iconic films: “Adaptation,” “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans,” “Con Air,” “Moonstruck,” “National Treasure,” “Pig,” “Red Rock West,” “Vampire’s Kiss,” “The Wicker Man,” and “Wild at Heart.”
“Heaped with praise and panegyrics as one of the finest screen actors of his generation, pilloried and parodied as an anything-for-a-paycheck hambone with a weakness for weird wigs and prostheses, Nicolas Cage is a one-man sideshow, a mixture of Marlon Brando, Robert Mitchum, Lon Chaney, and a stick of TNT who takes back ‘serious thespian’ prestige whenever he wants to, dives into grindhouse material and Academy Award hopefuls with the same mad enthusiasm,...

Recently, director Quentin Tarantino praised the much-maligned direct-to-video Bruce Willis films on his Video Archives Podcast. “I was really impressed by Bruce Willis in these movies,” he said. “I thought he was really charming in them. He’s really fun.” The director admitted that it was obvious that Willis was operating with an earpiece. “You can never have a scene where he says a line, somebody else says a line, and he says a line back,” he explained. “You’re getting one line out of him at a time, so there’s always a cut. But he’s making it work. He’s not phoning in his performances.“
When speaking of former stars who transitioned to Dtv movies, Tarantino would also address Nicolas Cage’s uniquely zig-zagging career. However, he would spotlight one of Cage’s more recently acclaimed movies, Pig. Tarantino said, “In watching some of the Nic Cage stuff,...

Pig (2021) is one of the most unconventional films you would see in Nicholas Cage’s filmography. More so, because it belongs in there and doesn’t belong there at the same time. It is almost as if debutant director Michael Sarnoski and Cage secretly plotted a cunning ‘defying-expectation’ narrative to play with the viewer’s mind.
On the surface and from the misleading trailer, Pig might seem like a hermit-styled John Wick reworking. However, in the able hands of director Sarnoski, it becomes something greater.
Now that Pig is the highest-rated Nicholas Cage movie on Rotten Tomatoes and also one of the best films of 2021, it’s time to analyze why the film really works. Distributed by Neon and released theatrically for a brief period, Pig follows Nic Cage on a quest.

Alex Wolff slides into a plush chair at the Mandarin Oriental in New York’s Columbus Circle and orders a massive breakfast. By his own admission, he’s hungover, but he looks perfectly put together in that East Village kind of way. The Nickelodeon star-turned-“Pig” breakout is wearing a hoodie with the words “San Francisco” emblazoned across the front, the type a tourist might pick up at Fisherman’s Wharf, paired with Alex Crane pants. The previous night, he hit the premiere for “A Quiet Place: Day One”; the latest entry in the Paramount horror franchise finds Wolff playing a hospice nurse who convinces a terminal Lupita Nyong’o to trek into the city just as an alien invasion unfolds.

Being one of the most notable burgeoning directors of the modern era, Yorgos Lanthimos' films have seen plenty of critical acclaim in recent years. With instant hits such as Poor Things, The Lobster, and The Favorite, Lanthimos has rocketed to stardom with his notable style of black comedy, often surrounding topics that feel almost dystopian in nature. His most recent film Kinds of Kindness, was released in June of this year and included stars such as Emma Stone, Hunter Schaffer, and Willem Dafoe.
Unique both in storytelling and presentation, Lanthimos' films are often comedic in nature, with a certain uncanny and uncomfortable element to them. The actors he chooses for these projects are often known for their experience in these sorts of films, indie or otherwise, taken from a wide variety of different genres. Because of this, it is surprising that he hasn't worked with the actors listed below, and...

Sophie Thatcher is a certified scream queen.
The “Yellowjackets” breakout star has gone on to appear in “The Boogeyman,” act opposite Hugh Grant in A24’s buzzy “Heretic,” and now lead elusive horror-thriller “Companion” alongside Jack Quaid.

In Michael Samoski's 2021 drama "Pig," Nicolas Cage plays a quiet, bearded recluse named Rob Feld who lives in a remote woodland cabin with his unnamed pet pig. The pig is a skilled truffle forager, and Rob makes a living selling truffles to a restaurant supplier (Alex Wolff) who occasionally drives out to his cabin. Rob clearly has a dark past, but has seemingly found peace in the woods. One night, however, Rob is attacked, and his pig is stolen. Rob has to trek into nearby Portland to retrieve his animal friend, and, we learn, confront his past.
As the film progresses, we discover that Rob had unusual connections in the world of Portland's high-end restaurateurs, and that he participated in eatery-related underground fighting rings (!). He's also still in mourning over the death of his wife years before, which was the primary impetus driving Rob to become a recluse. More than anything,...

Not every movie delivers on what audiences thought would be its premise or tone. Sometimes, a movie's press tour and marketing campaign will tell audiences exactly what they have to know before they go to the cinema. However, it is also often the case that these campaigns can shape audience expectations in a way that doesn't align with what the movie itself provides. Sometimes this can be deliberate in an attempt to shock audiences with a twist, while other times it feels as if the marketing didn't quite match the tone of the project.
Whether that is through unexpected plot twists, subversions of a genre, or dramatic shifts in tone, many movies have come to defy what audiences expected. These marketing campaigns concealed the true nature of the movie, often with mixed results. Sometimes these tonal changes pay off, but other times audiences may feel disappointed by what they thought they were going to see.

Our top pick this week is five-time Academy Award nominee Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy “Kinds of Kindness,” which is now streaming on Hulu. It’s Lanthimos’ third collaboration with Emma Stone, after “The Favourite” and “Poor Things.” It’s unlikely to make as strong a showing at the Academy Awards as those two, but that’s pretty much by design, as the film’s anthology structure and darkly absurdist tone make it not the kind of thing that wins Oscars. Jesse Plemons did win Best Actor at Cannes, though, so he could be a longshot contender in that category, especially at the Golden Globes.
The film consists of three loosely connected stories about people experiencing various forms of severe distress. In addition to Stone and Plemons, the cast includes Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, and Mamadou Athie.

Some men would rather go to prison than to therapy. Or at least, some men do go to prison rather than to therapy. This intensely empathetic and non-judgmental drama, based on a true story, suggests that beauty and emotion might result if desperate, damaged men were allowed to find other ways to express themselves, and emphasises the power of art — even bad art — to change lives.
Colman Domingo stars as John ‘Divine G’ Whitfield (the real Divine G makes a cameo appearance), a renaissance man and lifer who has spent his decades inside writing novels and plays when he’s not advocating tirelessly for himself and other inmates.
