But her mother passes away at her early age, while her father, always looking for new challenges, abandons her and remarries. Although she receives everything from her grandparents, she seeks her father's company as an adolescent girl, which always leads to arguments on her grandfather's side. But Eszter is wayward enough to stick to her principles.

Her husband, following the family tradition, works as a pharmacist and lures a young doctor to the village to boost the business. During their time together, the doctor falls in love with Eszter, which she flatly rejects. After the death of her grandparents, now the owner of a vast amount of land, despite her grandfather's prohibition, she sells everything to help her husband realize his dreams and to escape from the village where she can meet the doctor at any time.

World War II has reached Hungary, and there were constant quarrels between Eszter's sons over their different political views. Everyone tries to act on their convictions, causing the family to fall apart; her husband and daughter flee west, her younger son to Argentina and the older son to Budapest, but there he is injured and dies. Left alone in the family home, Eszter, now completely impoverished, takes her orphaned granddaughter with her and accepts the fate she has received.
