Eszter could have had an excellent childhood, with loving parents and wealthy grandparents. But her mother passes away at her early age, while her father, always looking for new challenges, abandons her and remarries. Although she receives everything from her grandparents, she seeks her father's company as an adolescent girl, which always leads to arguments on her grandfather's side. But Eszter is wayward enough to stick to her principles.

Eszter grew into a young woman under the loving care of her grandparents. She spends most of her days with her friends and helps care for her grandmother, who has been ailing lately. Despite the fact that she doesn't have time to deal with boys, she has more and more suitors. One of them is the brother of her best friend, for whom she does not feel an overwhelming love, but marries him anyway.

Eszter enjoys her new, independent life as a married woman and mother in her husband's parents' country house. Her husband, following the family tradition, works as a pharmacist and lures a young doctor to the village to boost the business. During their time together, the doctor falls in love with Eszter, which she flatly rejects. After the death of her grandparents, now the owner of a vast amount of land, despite her grandfather's prohibition, she sells everything to help her husband realize his dreams and to escape from the village where she can meet the doctor at any time.

Eszter's inherited wealth helps realize her husband's plans, who embarks on crazy spending. He built a massive house and started many businesses, but Eszter never criticizes his acts. But 10 years later, now a mother of three, she learns from her father that her husband also sold her grandparent's house, where she spent her childhood and which she wanted to bequeath to her children. In desperation, she goes to court, which her husband considers a personal attack, and this spoils their relationship.

As the years passed, Eszter's children all grew up to be anxious young adults. Join hands with their teacher, they establish a school for poor peasants' children, to give them a chance to study and be more than their parents. Eszter supports them, since she sees it as the realization of her father's youthful plan. All the work around the project is very good for her mental health, as her marriage is in ruins and her beloved father deteriorates very quickly.

World War II has reached Hungary, and there were constant quarrels between Eszter's sons over their different political views. Everyone tries to act on their convictions, causing the family to fall apart; her husband and daughter flee west, her younger son to Argentina and the older son to Budapest, but there he is injured and dies. Left alone in the family home, Eszter, now completely impoverished, takes her orphaned granddaughter with her and accepts the fate she has received.
