- While Captain Benedict's company is battling the rear elements of a German unit attempting to hold the town of Nieto, Private Draper (guest-star Peter Breck) distinguishes himself by almost single-handedly wiping out remaining enemy forces. Afterwards, however, he reveals himself as a sacrilegious loner, content to be alone and muse over a volume of Thoreau rather than associate with his comrades-in-arms. However, when it is discovered that the battle has taken the life of Nieto's only schoolteacher, Draper reluctantly steps in as substitute-instructor to teach the town's children lessons in geography, geometry, and art. In doing so, he negotiates his own relations with others and humanity in general. No longer the "lone wolf" of the outfit, Draper volunteers to help stave off a German counter-attack on Nieto in order to preserve the welfare of his students and their town. Finally, it takes but one dramatic and heroic act on Draper's part to confirm his future legendary status in the eyes of Nieto's citizens.
