STRAIT JACKET READY.
Super 10 Story.
Anthony Zerbe returns, in the perfect role. And it looks like the producers were going for an Emmy nod. For starters, William Hale directed, best known for THE INVADERS and NIGHT GALLERY.
The result has a rather creepy feel, and shades of the last episode, also to deal with a serial killer. The only difference is this story spends more time examing the mind of a serial killer --who wants to be captured? A dynamic cat and mouse game, memorably acted on the part of Zerbe.
This was undoubtedly inspired by the infamous ZODIAK KILLER, who dominated the headlines at the time. At first, Cannon thinks its all a joke until he gets random phone calls (and CASH) from Mr. Talbot (Zerbe) who's about to implode. Cannon gets to speed around Hollywood in the Lincoln. Impossible under normal circumstances, but lets have some fun.
Note the shots of him pulling into his home at the famous Sunset Towers on Sunset Boulevard, which is right across the street from the legendary COMEDY STORE nightclub. It hasn't changed a bit in 50 years.
Dana Wynter (in a good supporting role) plays Dr. Pace, who is also being watched by Talbot. Dana would appear several times on the show and worked with Bill Conrad, her old boss, at Warner Brothers/ABC tv. There's two alumnus from the BOB NEWHART SHOW; Jack Riley as a reliable computer geek and talented Florida Friebus playing a drunk. It's amazing to see Friebus in this role, known to all us kids as DOBIE GILLIS' beloved tv mom.
Friebus was also a dramatic actress, and a regular on PEYTON PLACE. She does an outstanding job and should have gotten an Emmy nod. Watch Cannon's face when he meets her. What a tragic scene.
Douglas Day Stewart wrote this story, who in the early 80s would pen AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN. Partly filmed in Long Beach, though there are scenes shot around Hollywood, North Hollywood and what looks like an off ramp near Glendale going into Burbank (where Cannon pulls over).
A great late, late night thriller. SEASON 2 EPISODE 22. Remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box #2. 21 hrs total.
