Strange but true: The Beatles’ American record company decided not to release their albums. Instead, Capitol chopped them up to generate more product. Nobody at the label had any idea that future generations would revere these records as sacred artistic units. No, Capitol just wanted to squeeze more funny paper out of the moptops before the bubble burst. So they doled out 12 songs per LP instead of 14, and rushed out seven albums in a year. American fans got different versions than the rest of the world. The U.S. albums have been forgotten by history,...

The Premises:
Pingyao Festival was founded by the great director Jia Zhangke in the mythical Chinese city of Pingyao, which is 2,800 years old. The old city, classified as a Unesco world heritage site, has preserved its ancient protective walls.
In its heart is a former disused factory, transformed into the festival palace. The originality of this palace is to have been able to preserve the old brick buildings by adapting them to the need to have places in line with the organization of an international film festival. This originality is reinforced by the attribution to certain buildings of the site, a name related to the history of Chinese cinema.

Sanaa Hamri, executive producer and director of the Prime Video fantasy series “The Wheel of Time,” feels like she’s just getting started.
The Moroccan-born filmmaker began her career in the late 1990s directing music videos for artists such as Prince, Mariah Carey, Sting and Nicki Minaj. She transitioned to television in the mid-2000s, directing episodes of “Desperate Housewives,” “Glee,” and “Nashville.” Hamri made her feature directorial debut in 2006 with the romantic comedy “Something New” for Focus Features. She has since directed the hit 2008 sequel “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” for Warner Bros. and the romantic comedy “Just Wright” for Searchlight in 2010.
With an overall deal with Amazon Prime Video, she’s on the Primetime Emmy Awards ballot for directing “The Wheel of Time” episode “What Was Meant to Be.” The second season finale follows Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) and others to an inevitable showdown with their most formidable enemies yet.

Historically Black Los Angeles has one less landmark that speaks to its cultural heritage. The iconic “Welcome to Black Beverly Hills” billboard, once proudly stationed near the neighborhood of Ladera Heights, has come down.
The creator of the billboard, Robert China Berry, says that he was forced to take down and move the billboard multiple times and is now seeking more permanent signage elsewhere in the area.
Berry trademarked the term “Black Beverly Hills” in 2012 for his clothing brand, which honors the history and cultural importance of the Black community in the region. But the legacy of Black Beverly Hills goes back decades.
During the 1950s, amid a backdrop of segregation and systemic racism, the area encompassing Baldwin Hills, Ladera Heights, View Park and Windsor Hills emerged as a sanctuary for Black professionals, artists and entrepreneurs in Los Angeles. Other People’s Money: Rosselli Finds Being Criminal is Relative
In keeping with a growing tradition of contemporary Argentinian cinema’s unorthodox narrative structures, editor Hernán Rosselli adds to this offbeat wave with his sophomore narrative feature, Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed. Hardly as wistful as the traditional wedding rhyme regarding a bride’s ensemble as the title suggests, Rosselli returns to similar themes as his 2014 debut, Mauro, in which a man works on distributing counterfeit bills on the street. This time around, Rosselli focuses on a family who runs an underground sports betting operation from their home, faced with an uncertain future following the death of their father and impending shakedowns by law enforcement.…...

It has been 25 years since Keri Russell graced the small screen in the iconic role of Felicity Porter.
Felicity, the J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves-produced college drama, was a critical darling of The WB, becoming a phenomenon well before "the big chop" controversy and often topping the list of young adult classics to this very day.
The series amassed 84 episodes over four seasons, and it was nominated for 38 awards, including a Golden Globe Best Actress nod for Keri Russell.
The series remains impactful, even two and a half decades later. And it's primarily due to the allure of the cast, many of whom are still going strong in their careers all these years later.
So, where is the cast of Felicity now? Check it out!

If you had any doubts that the series could thrive after Candace Cameron Bure's departure, Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: Something New allayed those fears.
De-aging the characters worked exceptionally well, and the most questionable choice -- to retain Marilu Henner as Aurora's mom, Aida -- gave the series an unexpected tether to the earlier episodes.
There's no doubt that this was a gamble that paid off handsomely for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.
Once upon a time, Bure was Hallmark royalty. There's a reason that she starred in 29 movies between the two networks, a record that will soon see Lacey Chabert, with 27, catching up and bypassing her.
Choosing a replacement for the longest-running mystery franchise couldn't have been easy with those big shoes to fill, but Skyler Samuels steps into the role perfectly.

Samuels weighed in on what it was like to portray a different version of a beloved character in a live chat with her co-stars Marilu Henner and Evan Roderick (via YouTube). The project excited her as an actor, she said.
“I was vaguely familiar with the Aurora franchise and world before, and when I had the opportunity to reprise young Aurora, I thought it was a really interesting challenge,” Samuels said. “I’ve never sort of reinvented or taken the reins of a character that already exists before.”

The Beatles remain a popular band decades after they broke up. A few musicians hated the band, but millions of people loved them. They sent several singles and albums to the top of the Billboard charts throughout the 1960s, but three Beatles records peaked at No. 2 in the United States because other Beatles albums kept them from getting to No. 1.

The flick becomes the 19th movie in the franchise, but the first without Candace Cameron Bure, who departed the cabler for a lucrative deal with Gac Family in 2022.
At the time, it seemed like the franchise was dead and buried, but the easiest way for the cabler to switch things up is to take a trip to the past with Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: Something New.
Skyler Samuels has been drafted in as the titular crime-solver in a movie that flashes back to Aurora's post-college days "when she finds herself back home in Lawrenceton," according to the official description.
While her mother, Aida, struggles to keep her newfound real estate business, Aurora supports herself by working as...

Angel Olsen showed an affinity for working with classic country sounds on her latest album Big Time, which came out in June. On Tuesday, Olsen released an updated version of the title track, which features country maverick Sturgill Simpson.
A lilting countrypolitan waltz about the rush of falling hard for someone, “Big Time” is recast as a duet here between Olsen and Simpson. “Good morning kisses, giving you all mine,” Olsen begins in the opening verse, as with the original, but the second verse sounds like an answer as Simpson takes over.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has elected new presidents Stephanie Allain and Donald De Line. The pair ran unopposed to assume the roles from Gail Berman and Lucy Fisher, who have served as the presidents of the organization since 2018, and their appointment was announced during the Guild’s annual memberships meeting.
Allain and De Line reacted to the news via a press statement, saying “As proud members of the PGA for over twenty years, it’s a great privilege to serve as Presidents. Gail and Lucy’s excellent leadership has grown and strengthened the Guild, and we will build on their progress.”
They added, “Along with [National Executive Director] Susan Sprung and her team, we will continue to educate the industry on the role of the producer, support producers’ efforts for fair and commensurate compensation and benefits, welcome and encourage a more diverse membership, and endeavor to attain broader healthcare coverage while...

French sales agency Elle Driver is giving a Cannes Market launch to “Kid Snow,” a West Australian-produced tale of redemption set in the 1970s world of tent boxing. Production starts on Monday in Australia’s Goldfields-Esperance region, making it the first feature film to kick off production in the state since its border re-opened.
Boxing tents toured Australia’s small towns from the early 1900s until the 1970s, and were venues where professional fighters faced off against local challengers. The troupes criss-crossed the outback, boasted a carnival-like atmosphere and were places where Indigenous fighters could become heroes.
Penned by writers John Brumpton and Stephen Cleary, the story involves a washed-up Irish boxer named Kid Snow who is finally given a chance to redeem himself when he is offered a rematch against the man he fought a decade prior, on a night that changed his life forever. When Kid Snow meets single mother Sunny,...

Emmy-nominated producer Stephanie Allain has signed a new first-look deal with Warner Bros. Television Group and HBO. The new agreement continues Allain’s relationship with the Studio, where she and her Homegrown Pictures production company has been under a first-look pact since February 2020. Allain and her Homegrown Pictures team, including Director of Development Gabrielle Ebron, will develop original scripted programming to be produced by Warner Bros. Television for HBO and HBO Max, external streaming services, cable, and broadcast.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but both Wbtvg and HBO confirm it is a multi-year deal.
Allain produced the 2020 Academy Awards alongside Lynette Howell Taylor, making history as the first African American woman in the Academy’s 92-year history to do so. She received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for her work on the Oscars.
Allain founded female-led Homegrown Pictures in 2003, a company which produces content by and about women and people of color.

Warner Bros. Television Group and HBO have sealed a new first-look deal with producer Stephanie Allain (“Dear White People”) and her Homegrown Pictures banner. Troye Sivan remembers that first time he got tested for HIV. “I was in a new relationship and I wanted to have sex,” he recalls on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “We both went and got tested and once we were all clear, it was all good to go.”
He also remembers learning about the virus that causes AIDS while growing up in Australia. “It was probably doom-and-gloom movies that were super heartbreaking,” Sivan says.
Things are much different today. Sivan stars in the new Paramount Plus feature “Three Months” as Caleb, a high school senior in Florida who learns he may have been exposed to HIV during a one-night stand. Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Jared Frieder, “Three Months” is a coming-of-age dramedy about young queer love and family. “Where are the stories that are painting the picture of what HIV is like today?...

For every Ryan Murphy and Greg Berlanti, there are hundreds of Jared Frieders in Hollywood: sharp, funny, and ambitious working writers who make careers improving and punching up other people’s ideas, hoping to one day get their solo shot. Nearly 10 years since he first began writing the script for the tender coming-of-age comedy “Three Months,” which he also directed, that day finally came for Frieder. While the writer and director calls the film’s February 23 release on Paramount+ “truly surreal,” he is under no illusions as to how this particular dream came true. The script may be heartfelt, witty, and a nuanced take on HIV stigma, but it was the name recognition of star Troye Sivan that pushed it over the finish line.

“Bloom County” will be co-written and executive produced by Breathed. Bento Box will serve as the animation studio on the project. Miramax, Spyglass and Project X will also executive-produce.

November is a good month for saying goodbye on HBO Max. The streaming platform will host the final 2021 episodes of HBO late-night staples “Real Time with Bill Maher” and the Emmy Award-winning “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the season finales of Max originals “Love Life” and “Doom Patrol,” and also provide home viewers their last opportunity to watch “Dune” on HBO Max until sometime in 2022 (“Dune” leaves HBO Max on November 21).
But beyond those conclusions, there are some huge premieres as well: Oscar contender “King Richard” arrives on November 19 with Will Smith in the lead role, the back-half of “Gossip Girl” Season 1 will make its debut at some point, and the HBO Music Box series continues with the Alanis Morrisette documentary “Jagged” (which the singer roundly criticized) and a new feature on Dmx. All of that content, plus a number of library classics, including but not limited to “Moonstruck,...
