The 38-year-old actress, who shares two young daughters with former baseball pro Nick Swisher, was born in Tampa, Florida, to Cuban parents -- and tells Et that throughout her life, both in and out of the spotlight, her Cuban heritage "hugely shaped who I am."
The Kevin (Probably) Saves the World star has embraced her roots throughout her two decades in Hollywood, bringing diversity to typically white roles in playing characters like Ariel on Once Upon a Time.
"The beautiful thing about fairy tales is that they resonate with most everyone," she says. Elizabeth Bandercan was well aware of the kidness of strangers long before Hurricane Harvey flood waters devastated her community in late August.
The Bellaire High School soccer coach had started a special Esl (“English as a second language”) team at her Houston-area school three years ago as a way for her non-English speaking students to have a school activity that did not require language.
“There have been so many people supporting us by donating used cleats and jerseys year after year,” Bandercan tells People. “And I kept telling the boys, ‘When the time comes, you’re going to have to give back to the community,...

Chicago – This week, we’re introducing HollywoodChicago.com Esp. What exactly is HollywoodChicago.com Esp? Well, in an attempt to keep up with our ever-growing and evolving readership, we will now be providing film reviews in Spanish. HollywoodChicago.com has always prided itself on being inclusive and progressive, and we know that many of our readers learned English as a second language. We have heard your suggestions and here is our response.
You might think HollywoodChicago.com Esp stands for HollywoodChicago.com Español, and you would be mostly right. The content will be in Spanish, but Esp stands for Esta Semana en Peliculas, which translates to “this week in film”. At the end of every week, we will release an Esp post that will contain reviews of all the movies we saw that week. This won’t replace our usual English-language reviews, but will be made in addition to them.

Castle, P.I., is looking for excitement — but his partners in mystery-solving aren’t feeding his need.

As seen in this sneak peek from Monday’s episode (ABC, 10/9c), Alexis and Hayley (played by Molly Quinn and Toks Olagundye) have drummed up tons of investigative work, to be sure, but none of the kind that piques the interest of their boss man (Nathan Fillion). Luckily — and lest the Nikki Heat author be left to face his writer’s block — a bizarre breaking news story is just what the private detective ordered.

I miss Robin Williams, Lord I how I miss that man. I will never forget hearing that he had not only died but apparently by his own hand. This comic genius who brought so much laughter and love to so many people suffered from severe depression. And we lost him because of it, we lost so much.
Now here at last is the final piece of work on his resume, the final movie of Robin Williams. Is it a great movie? Yes, absolutely! Is it easy to watch? No, not at all. Boulevard is a movie with a deep well of sadness, a great epic sadness and loneliness that hangs over this movie and fills every frame like nothing I have ever seen.
Director Dito Montiel’s Boulevard is the kind of movie where every shot, every edit, camera angle and especially, every line of dialog and movement by every actor is important.

In 2010, Ariel Kleiman came across an article in the New York Times about child assassin trades in Colombia.
The piece affected him greatly and he continued to think about it for months; until he realised his gut reaction was to take the bones of this story and make it into a feature film.
Immediately, the writer/director set about penning the script with partner Sarah Cyngler.
Two years later, he had Partisan.
Partisan follows the plight of 11-year-old Alexander (Jeremy Chabriel) a trained child assassin raised in a cultish retreat consisting of mothers, their children and Gregori (Vincent Cassell); their patriarch.
The film is set in a place Kleiman often refers to as Nowhere Land (actually shot in Melbourne and Georgia). While the initial inspiration for the project may have come from events in Colombia; a Colombian film this is not.

Jason Reitman made a touching and eloquent introduction to his new movie Labor Day in Toronto, the city that’s practically a second home for the Canadian-born director. Then the lights dimmed and the crowd buzzed in anticipation… but for two empty seats in the middle of Ryerson Theatre with placards reading “Winslet.” Under the cloak of darkness, a young fan tried to sneak into the exclusive seats before being shamed away by an Oscar-winning director seated in the same reserved row. The pair of seats remained empty for the duration of the film.

Shades of Scorsese and Refn follow much of Victor Teran and Youssef Delara's psychological thriller "Snap," but the directors are able to adeptly insert their own demented to twists to make the film something both unique and frightening. Sensitive souls should stay far away, but those looking for something more shocking in their SXSW lineup should be sure to give the film a shot. What is it about? A stylish psychological thriller set against the underground dub step DJ scene that takes the audience on a dark and terrifying journey into the depths of the psychopathic mind as it threatens to explode into horrific violence. About the filmmaker: We've been working as a team in one way or another since 2004 when Youssef wrote and directed and Victor produced our first film, English As A Second Language. We've made three more films together since then -- Bedrooms, Filly Brown (which...

And as the narrator said at the start of the episode in this Southland quote…
The Lapd serves 4 million people speaking over 100 different languages. Sometimes things get lost in translation. | permalink
Speaking of needing translation, Sammy and Ben's puppet show could have used one. They were awful. You'd think Sammy would be better at this considering he has a kid. But leave it to Sherman to hit the important points. He managed to get hit on by the hot grade school teacher.
But I suppose Sammy had other things on his mind, like Tammy no-showing on their assigned custody swap. The problem was that Sammy's a good guy and Tammy knew exactly how to push his buttons. Plus, she was more than willing to play dirty to get what she wanted.

Javier Bardem on Hollywood, hair and being a Bond baddie
Javier Bardem has a face that was made for Bond villainy: buggy eyes, crooked nose, full lips… And that's before you get to his hair. As the killer Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men, he established a useful link between psychopathy and the side parting. Now, as Raoul Silva, 007's nemesis in the new movie, Skyfall, the actor looks as if an albino polecat is draped across his head.
Bardem is back to normal brown hair today, a large presence in a London hotel room, with a slight look of Depardieu about him; jolie laide, if that term was ever used for a man. After these kinds of roles, I wonder if it's possible that the actor finds himself sinister. "Every time I wake up," Bardem replies, and laughs loudly. "I look at myself in the mirror to...

Los Angeles (Reuters) - Randee Heller is walking the Emmy red carpet for the first time this year, but hoping that her many fans -- some of whom created a Facebook page in her honor -- won't recognize her.
That's because the "Mad Men" actress is nominated for her guest role in the 1960s TV drama as the cantankerous, racist, octogenarian secretary Miss Blankenship -- a character that added 20 years and hours of make-up to Heller's real self.

Madonna, Valeria, Abbie, Asia, and Marisa
Nathaniel: Of all the things people could fault her for, I hope this look isn't one of them. Every thing about it is working. It's memorable. The glasses are a fun diva choice.
Jose: They so are. She looks so happy.

It’s a totally new experience in the found-footage genre, usually in a film like this, a good portion is left up to the viewers imagination but we get to see everything 15 minutes in. TrollHunter almost acts like a big budget creature film with a low budget way of telling it.
What I didn’t like about the movie, is the lack of even storytelling. There’s a lot to love in TrollHunter but I felt that compared to the actual Trolls, nothing is as good. When our heroes talk about the Trolls, it’s very compelling but...

Did it seem to you that The Great Gatsby was especially difficult to read? It's a book that most American students encounter in high school. When I read it the first time, I certainly missed some of the nuances, but I didn't stumble over any of the words.
Even at the time, I noticed the particular beauty of its conclusion. After the whole doomed scenario has played out, Nick looks once again across the waters of the Sound:
Most of the big shore places were closed now and there were hardly any lights except the shadowy, moving glow of a ferryboat across the Sound. And as the moon rose higher the inessential houses began to melt away until gradually I became aware of the old island here that flowered once for Dutch sailors' eyes--a fresh, green breast of the new world. Its vanished trees, the trees that had made way for Gatsby's house,...

Earlier this month I got invited to attend a round table with possibly my favourite actor of all time, Tom Hanks to talk about his new movie, Larry Crowne which hits UK cinemas today, 1st July.
During the course of the interview, we got to find out a little about his working life and how he relates to Larry in the movie.
Read on for more info or click here to view all our coverage of Larry Crowne.

Have you ever been sacked?
I have never experienced what poor Larry does where he walks in a room on top of the world and found out that he’s losing his job. Once I thought I was doing a movie because the Producers, the Director and the Studio all told me I was and then had a meeting with them only to receive a phone call the next day from my...

Becoming Chaz, a documentary about Chaz Bono’s transition from female to male, recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and on TV’s Oprah Winfrey Network. The film takes viewers inside Chaz’s life with his fiancé, Jennifer Elia, as they navigate working his transition into the life they’ve already created together.
Jennifer took a moment to chat with us about the process of making the documentary, exchanging Facebook messages with partners of other trans people, and her and Chaz’s hairless cats.
AfterEllen: How did you and Chaz come to the decision to do the documentary?
Jennifer Elia: He wanted to get his story out, and he also wanted to do it in a way where he had control over how it was presented. He was going to do it as a news interview or a news program and that didn’t come to pass. He sort of stumbled into it.

Secrets, Lies and Flatulence
Virginia loves to gossip, and it's written all over her face. Burt and Jimmy wants to know what.
“Tell it. Spill it. Don't fight it, let it out.”
“Dancin' Dan and Whistlin' Sue has been hooking up at the rec center. I found out from Government Conspiracy Gordon.”
The next day, Virginia is shocked that their gas bill is two weeks overdue.
Her reason. “I always go into the check cashing place next door to the pharmacy, and I pay it when I am waiting for them to refill Maw Maw's prescription, and I always remember to get her new pills when I go to the bathroom cupboard for a tampon. And since my friend has not arrived yet the gas bill cannot be late.” - Oh no!
Jimmy cannot find out about this. Virginia is worried that she won't be able to make fun of his unplanned pregnancy anymore.

Former WWE champ Chyna is known for a lot of things, but her brain has never been one of 'em -- until now ... maybe. TMZ spoke with Chyna (real name Joanie Laurer) who tells us she's currently enrolled in language classes at UCLA night school and is studying to teach English as a second language to kids in Japan. Chyna doesn't have a job lined up yet, but tells TMZ ... "I love TV but I'm ready to move on.

Dear Jackie:My survival job is sucking the lifeblood out of me. I know I should be grateful to even have a job in this recession, especially since I was unemployed for one year and my husband and I financially hit rock bottom (we have two kids). But I am drained both mentally and physically. Worse, I feel nervous every day! While my survival job in the past has always allowed me to pursue "the biz," my current job doesn't even give me time to go to the bathroom! I was hoping you could suggest some other options for a survival job.Let me explain. I am now a second-grade classroom teacher. My survival job has always been teaching in the New York City public schools, but in the past it was in a very different capacity. I was a part-time creative movement/Esl (English as a second language) teacher. I...

#1, 2, and 3 biggest problem I have with Community (and Glee) is their distasteful meta-awareness. Specifically Community and Abed are standing on the wrong side of that line, not sure how much longer I can watch this. What’re your thoughts on this subject?
Season two of the third (yes, I’m calling Glee a comedy!) best new comedy on network television last year started out by putting everything in its right place. Jeff is not interested in Annie (I don’t know why I thought their kiss at the end of last season meant anything! Was anyone else fooled??) and Britta is still a sad, sad girl. Other than the fact that Troy moved in with Pierce, nothing else has changed since the end of season one. Unless you consider student Chang a big change. I kinda do. Especially if the teaser at the end of “Anthropology 101″ means anything, Chang as...

People say Troll 2 is the worst film ever made—or Battlefield Earth. These people have very limited experience in cinema, I think. If these two films are the worst ever made, what is the barometer for badness? If Battlefield Earth is the worst film ever made, then it must be the ability to completely forget a film after seeing it. If it’s Troll 2, it must be a bit of the hype surrounding it. I mean, the film does have a documentary about its badness and the career of its star. Or are all these people wrong, and is the worst film of all time Plan 9 From Outer Space? Hey man, there is some magic to Plan 9—despite its undeniable awfulness. What about The Room? Cool kids will revel in the absolute stupidity that is Tommy Wiseau’s first feature film.

A review of the "Community" season one finale coming up just as soon as I find a loophole... Last week's "English as a Second Language" felt very much like a season finale, with the gang (and the show) figuring out how to stay together once they all finished their Spanish requirement. And as Abed repeatedly noted, "Pascal's Triangle Revisited" also felt very much like a season finale, here with the return of all the notable recurring characters, Annie preparing to leave Greendale, Troy looking for a roommate and, most obviously, with Professor Slater and Britta competing for Jeff's affections. So why...

This week's episode of Community had to be originally written as the first season finale, right?
It concluded with a change of direction for Senor Chang (guess we should just call him "Chang" now, huh?), along with a new class for the study group to focus on next semester. Still, "English as a Second Language" was simply the second-to-last episode of this sitcom's hilarious opening season. Weird.
That confusion aside, the half hour fell a bit flat for me. It may have a lot to do with last week's stellar, positively absurd "Modern Warfare," which was a difficult act to follow.
But Community's pop culture references felt more forced than usual last night. The Troy-as-Will-Hunting concept was solid, but nothing really came of it. Such a parody requires witty writing, not just a set-up.
As always, the best moments took place when the group just sat around the study table (in that regard,...

First I’ve gotta talk about last week’s episode “Modern Warfare” which much like “Contemporary American Poultry” was a reference fest and pushed Community further down the runway toward that pool containing a shark. Let’s be clear: I don’t believe Community has jumped the shark yet. Yet. When they do, they will most likely put laser beams on said shark in an episode devoted to Bond, James Bond.
Side note: I am sick and tired of hearing Gene Wilder’s beautiful song “Pure Imagination” (from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) in that At&T commercial only because the song is not available for purchase on iTunes and I have forgotten where you buy compact discs.
“Glee Club.” For some reason I never thought of Glee and Community as competitors though rather obviously the writers of Community do. I think they went a little overboard in…

Until now, the showbiz life for indie queen Greta Gerwig included plenty of creative satisfaction but few celebrity perks. She worked the film festival circuit taking airport shuttle vans from Sundance to SXSW, Nashville to Florida and all points in-between to discuss her roles in low-budget movies like the horror/comedy hybrid "Baghead", the relationship dramas "Hannah Takes the Stairs" and "Nights and Weekends" and the grind house-inspired thriller "The House of the Devil". Often, her promotional tasks would alternate with returning home to a Brooklyn apartment she shared with a roommate and a day job teaching English as a second language in order to make ends meet between movie work. Just 26-years-old, after what seems to be a lifetime starring in low- budget movies, Gerwig has gone Hollywood in all the good ways. Gerwig co-stars with Ben Stiller in writer/director Noah Baumbach's comedy "Greenberg" (shot on film,...

We sat down recently with director James McTeigue to talk about his new film, “Ninja Assassin,” based on a screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski, and starring Korean pop star Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune and legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi.
As a boy in Sydney, McTeigue was exposed to a variety of world cinema and television and was heavily influenced by ninja television shows like "Shintaro" and "Phantom Agents," and by films such as "Shinobi No Mono." He graduated from Sydney University, where he studied art and film.
McTeigue made his directorial debut helming the iconoclastic screen adaptation of the graphic novel "V for Vendetta." He came to the project through his relationship with the Wachowski brothers, for whom he served as the assistant director on all three "Matrix" films. His other previous film credits as an assistant director include "Speed Racer" and "Dark City.

Let's say we gathered the world's top architects and played a game of "Which of these is not like the others?" David Adjaye, one of the newest members of that club, would stand out. Because at 43 years old, he is so young.
Architecture today is an old man's field. It is not like literature or film or technology, where twenty- and thirty-somethings regularly burst into the elite. You do your time. You build a few small things, then bigger ones. If you're lucky, when everyone else is ready for Aarp membership, you reach the top of the field and stay there until you die.
