Halloween’s just around the corner, and you’re trying to figure out the perfect horror show to watch during the spooky season but just can’t seem to find the right fit. Well, do not fret, my friend, because in this list I will try to cover your specific criteria because not everyone likes gore, ghosts, or slow-burn mystery thrillers, and that’s totally alright. Horror is a massive mezze platter that can leave you overwhelmed, so let me help you decide which dish you want to devour. Many believe Korean dramas are only reserved for romance lovers because that’s the stereotypical Korean drama that’s been popularized over the years. But the Korean entertainment industry, just as any other industry, consists of many genres, melodrama being their favorite, comedy, romance, mystery thrillers, and yes, of course, horror. While always bringing their A-game in the genre with films...

Horror, martial arts, sci-fi and more – here’s our pick of 35 genre films you can watch for free on Tubi.
Like any streaming service, particularly of the ad-supported variety, there’s a lot of filler on Tubi, the subscription-free platform which recently made its debut in the UK.
On there you’ll find an array of low-budget documentaries of spurious quality, landfill reality TV and how-did-this-get-made TV movies (Amish Abduction).
Do a bit of digging, though, and you’ll find plenty of movies that are genuinely worth watching, including the work of such respected directors as Michael Mann (Ali), Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), David Fincher (Gone Girl) and Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel).
Look beyond even those worthy films, and Tubi is positively stuffed with genre and cult offerings – sci-fi, horror, comedy, martial arts, thrillers and more besides. Finding these can take a bit of hunting around, however, so...

Four weeks after its initial release, South Korean horror film “Exhuma” is still burning through the country’s box office. “Pamyo,” as it’s known in Korea (which directly translates to “exhumation for relocation or cremation”), has resonated in a major way with audiences who have shown up in droves to see the story of a shaman named Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and the wandering spirits she takes on with Bong-gil (Lee Do-hyun), her protégé. This week: it expands in the United States.
Just one week into its release, “Exhuma” became the highest-grossing Korean film of 2024 so far, knocking the Timothée Chalamet-starring “Wonka” off the top spot following its delayed release there. Chalamet’s other big film of the moment, “Dune: Part Two,” placed second in Korea for three successive weekends in the wake of “Exhuma” too.

"You think this is a joke?" Blue Finch Films in the UK has debuted a new trailer for a proper re-release of a long lost sports comedy from Korea titled The Foul King. It originally opened in Korea in 2000 but never landed in the US. It also played at TIFF and the 2001 Berlin Film Festival but it was never released in the US and has never arrived in the west (though you can obviously import DVD copies of it). Beloved Korean actor Song Kang-ho stars as Dae-ho, a timid bank clerk who is going nowhere in his everyday life. After meeting a famous former pro wrestler, Dae-ho transforms himself into a Korean wrestling villain. From acclaimed writer / director Kim Jee-woon. Although he's not talented enough to ever become a top wrestler, Dae-Ho trains diligently at night... and he is turned into the villain known as "The Foul King". The rest is history!

Hansel and Gretel, the two German kids who nearly became somebody’s meal, need little introduction. The characters in this Brothers Grimm classic have been used as a lesson about stranger danger and resilience for years. And while Hansel and Gretel’s ordeal has been put on screen multiple times — both faithfully and loosely — Yim Pil-sung’s 2007 movie is one of the more distinct adaptations. This Korean reimagining retains the essence of the influential fairy tale while also adding its own unique twists.
Hansel and Gretel was one of several movies from the golden age of South Korean Horror — often referred to as “K-Horror” in the West — to be based on fairy or folk tales. While Arang and A Tale of Two Sisters dug into local Korean lore, other movies drew from European narrations. However, much like Cinderella and The Red Shoes, Hansel and Gretel’s interpretation of its basis is rather liberal.

Horror is iterative, but it just as regularly moves through the same cycles decade after decade, ostensibly breaking new ground, when in reality, the genre is simply doing what is has always done. Today's horror landscape, for as remarkable and diverse as it is, is principally a landscape of legacy sequels. The horror of yesterday is new again, and commonly, old faces and names are dredged up to headline the latest nostalgic bloodbath. Reasonably, the present iteration could be decried as Hollywood's lack of originality, though seasoned horror veterans have seen this cycle before.
The early aughts were replete with imported horrors. Hollywood studios regularly borrowed transnational scares, repackaged them, and presented them as the next big thing. They were successful, too. Gore Verbinski's "The Ring," a remake of Hideo Nakata's "Ring," grossed nearly $250 million when released in 2002. Hollywood studios also remade the likes of "A Tale of Two Sisters,...

The bond between siblings in movies can be depicted as both loving and supportive or intense and rivalrous, adding depth to the storytelling. Iconic sister duos in movies often overcome challenges together, whether it's in the form of magic, horror, or complex family dynamics. Some memorable sister duos in movies include Elizabeth and Jane Bennet (Pride & Prejudice), Sally and Gillian Owens (Practical Magic), and Su-mi and Su-yeon (A Tale Of Two Sisters), each displaying unique dynamics and impactful storytelling.
The bond between siblings has been a driving force for countless movies, and the best sister duos make for unforgettable silver-screen storytelling. There have been many on-screen sisters over the decades, but only the most memorable have gone on to become iconic duos. While there are many movies with a group of sisters, like Little Women, it is even better when the relationship is a closer one that is between just two siblings.

Some of the best genre movies of the past two decades come from Korea. While a lot of people know the names Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook, not as many people are aware of the brilliant but underrated Kim Jee-woon. Director Kim has given us some all-time great Korean horror and genre movies like "I Saw the Devil." He even made the fantastic Apple TV+ series "Dr. Brain."
But before all that, director Kim's made "A Tale of Two Sisters," a horror movie based on a popular Korean folktale (which has been adapted several times). The plot focuses on Su-mi, a young girl recently released from a mental institution. Finally back home, she is very protective of her younger sister Su-yeon, and quite cold toward her stepmother Eun-joo — who used to be a nurse for the sisters' late mother. Some movies have successfully used the twist that the main character was secretly the killer all along, adding a new layer of complexity and turning the story into a campier, more fun affair. However, stories where the hero is the killer tend to flop more often than they soar, as viewers have already seen countless spins on this trope and it can feel tired and predictable. A few great movies, such as High Tension and The Uninvited, have managed to make this revelation genuinely shocking and effective, adding depth to the story and leaving viewers surprised.
The revelation that a movie’s main character was secretly the killer all along is a hoary old cliché, but a few choice movies have made this infamous twist shine. It is a played-out, tired trope. A murder mystery sets up an intriguing bevy of suspects, gives viewers good reason to believe that each of them is guilty,...

“Cobweb”, Kim Jee-woon's tenth feature film, marks the director's return to comedy for the first time since the beginning of his career. This satire on the film industry is a true cinematic layer cake: one can dig into it with hearty bites for the sheer pleasure of the visual feast, or one can peel it apart, layer by layer, to unveil a fascinating portrayal of the dark period of Korean history in the 1970s and a profound introspection by the director on creativity and the filmmaking profession.
Kim Jee-woon began his career in the 1990s as an actor and a theater director before directing his debut feature film, “The Quiet Family”, in 1998. He is part of a new generation of filmmakers, along with Bong Joon-ho and Park Chan-wook, who no longer followed the traditional apprenticeship model of old studios, but are authentic cinephiles who came to cinema out of pure passion.

With Cobweb, South Korean genre stalwart Kim Jee-woon falls back on that old piece of received wisdom: “movie people, ain’t they crazy?” When in self-satirizing mode, it’s uncanny how often filmmakers will depict their industry and their working environment as a barely held-together farrago; if this were accurate, how many movies would actually be completed? But also premiering at Cannes this May was Sean Price Williams and Nick Pinkerton’s The Sweet East, which reversed this trend slightly by portraying its two filmmaker characters, played by Jeremy O. Harris and Ayo Edebiri, as eerily perfect professionals not lacking for sharky opportunism.
Very much associated with the first wave of post-millennial South Korean cinema that made global inroads, Kim (known for twisty shockers like A Tale of Two Sisters and I Saw the Devil) intends Cobweb as both a film allowing him to take stock and memorialize his lucrative...

During the 2000s, there was no shortage of horror movies, and now that society is loving horror movies again, a lot of these should be revisited. From 1931's Frankenstein to 1973's The Exorcist horror movies have been an important part of pop culture for decades. However, there have been eras where they were more prominent than others. The 70s and 80s saw iconic horror films like Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street, while the late 90s launched the iconic Scream franchise. Horror films reached a new peak in the 2000s, with popular films like Friday The 13th and House of Wax being remade.
However, the industry also spun out some original horror films, some of which inspired the iconic parody franchise, Scary Movie. The franchise has mocked every horror film, from Scream and The Grudge, to The Amityville Horror and The Blair Witch Project. Horror movies began to fade sometime in the 2010s,...

The teenage central character of Polite Society has more energy than she knows what to do with, and so does the film that contains her.
This debut feature from writer/director Nida Manzoor, creator of the acclaimed television series We Are Lady Parts, is the sort of wildly audacious work that signifies a rising talent who can’t wait to throw more ideas into the cinematic mix. Admittedly, not all of them gel in this raucous comedy receiving its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival before a theatrical release by Focus Features in April. But even when the ambitious film overshoots, you can’t wait to see what happens next.
And a lot happens in this story revolving around Ria (Priya Kansara), a British-Pakistani girl who dreams of becoming a stuntwoman like her idol (represented by photos of famed real-life British stuntwoman Eunice Huthart), to whom she consistently writes...

Mr. Harrigan's Phone and Smile are out to spice up Halloween season a bit with their terrifying stories about evil entities and the dead returning to the realm of the living. However, sometimes all viewers want is a good traditional horror story that goes well with the autumn season.
When Halloween rolls around, it might feel like people just talk about watching the same movies, over and over again. While this is fun, a good way to find out about new films is to forget about what's local and look at what the rest of the world has to offer. When looking abroad, there are creepier ghost stories one could ever imagine.
Kôrei (Séance) (2000) - Japan Not Currently Available To Stream
Even with its short running time, Séance doesn't rush at all, and instead meticulously crafts its supernatural elements as an effective vehicle to reach the climax of the film's haunting family drama.

Fans of weird and eerie German movies, rejoice! Your Halloween spooky viewing has arrived, and it's carved out a steady spot in Netflix's Top 10 trending watches. "Old People" is German-Romanian filmmaker Andy Fetscher's horror thriller wherein the old eat the young, bludgeon them, and sometimes vomit on them. It's the sort of concept that M. Night Shyamalan would have a field day with, but Fetscher adds more chaos and a cadre of monsters at the door.
A title card at the opening reads:
In times of yore, an avenging spirit was thought to inhabit old people. A dark power that took possession of the frailest members of the clan and drive them into a seemingly blind rage.
That's right – this is functionally an elderly rage-zombie movie. What a time to be alive.
At its core, the story focuses on generational disconnect by observing lonely elders, excluded from local festivities,...
