The Box is loosely based on a short story, "Button, Button " (1970) by American science fiction writer Richard Matheson. The story was also adapted for the "Button, Button" episode segment of 1980s The Twilight Zone. The Box contains parts of both the short story and The Twilight Zone episode and then extends the story to show who is behind what is happening and why they are doing it.
