Putting a wash on. Attending a school reunion. Making a lasagne. Just some of the things you might have been doing instead of watching TV in 2022. Whatever kept you away from the box, it was a mistake. What you should have been doing is catching up on the below – a selection of British sci-fi, supernatural drama, crime thrillers, and comedy. Because what’s better than the comfortable joy of watching fictional characters live their complicated lives, taking all the risks and making all the mistakes? Almost nothing. Unless you’re the sort of person who puts double cream and three types of cheese in your lasagne, in which case, carry on, you’re doing the Lord’s work.
As 2022 nears its conclusion, here are the new British TV shows that if you missed them on release, deserve your time and attention.

When Karen Pirie lies down on the job, this detective isn’t loafing. She’s busy concentrating, trying not to scream in frustration at the chauvinistic bosses who’ve assigned her a perplexing 25-year-old cold case with little confidence she’ll solve it. They should know better. Mystery fans already do, if they’re familiar with the work of prolific Scottish novelist Val McDermid, whose Tony Hill series inspired six seasons of Wire in the Blood. Let’s hope for similar results for BritBox’s Karen Pirie, featuring a scrappy up-and-comer who erupts in fury whenever it’s suggested she only got this case—the 1996 murder of a barmaid that’s the subject of a nagging podcast—because of her gender. Though she’s the first to admit, in an instantly endearing and self-deprecating aside, that it’s “not the greatest time to be called Karen.” The prime suspects in the case,...

Exclusive: ITV is adapting Val McDermid’s series of cold case investigations Karen Pirie from Harlots writer Emer Kenny and Bodyguard producer World Productions.
The British commercial broadcaster has ordered three, two-hour drama episodes of the adaptation, which is based on McDermid’s novel, The Distant Echo, the first in a series of best-selling novels about a young Scottish female detective set in the Scottish university town of St. Andrew’s.
Karen is a refreshingly normal and charmingly unfashionable young woman. While she is not slick or a maverick cop, her quick mouth and ingenuity make her an impressive investigator. Following her promotion to Police Scotland’s Historic Cases Unit, Karen is tasked with reopening the investigation into a murder that has been the subject of a provocative true crime podcast. When teenage barmaid Rosie Duff was stabbed to death in 1995, suspicion fell on the three drunken students who discovered her body.

As UK remake The Tunnel returns, we celebrate Swedish/Danish crime drama The Bridge...
9pm, Saturday night, BBC Four. For the few of us who still, on occasion, watch television when it’s actually broadcast, that timeslot means only one thing: high-quality drama from outside the anglophone world. Okay, so some of the series are less impressive than others, and one or two are in English (remember Australia’s The Code?) but these are exceptions to the rule. What began as a fad, accompanied by much reductive talk of ‘Scandi noir’ and a mildly disturbing national obsession with Sarah Lund’s knitwear, has culminated in a golden age for telly addicts. Our initial resistance to subtitles has faded, and a whole world of often beautifully acted, compellingly plotted drama has opened up. We haven’t strayed very far outside Europe yet, but it’s a start.

Holly birthday, Happyoaks! Sorry, let's try that again. Happy birthday, Hollyoaks! That's better.
It's often written off as the runt of the soap litter, but we're rather affectionate towards Hollyoaks. Surprisingly, it's not only survived but is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary this autumn. It now boasts 50 regulars and a faster pace than any other soap, but can you believe that Hollyoaks once focused on the adventures of only seven main characters?
Launching on Channel 4 in October 1995 with just one episode per week, Hollyoaks gradually earned a place in viewers' hearts as it followed the tangled lives and torrid loves of Kurt, Jambo, Louise, Maddie, Natasha, Dawn and Tony. So where are Chester's magnificent seven now?

Is ITV really going to bring back Cold Feet?
That's the rumour, with the broadcaster apparently looking to plug the Downton-shaped hole in its schedule with a revival of the popular comedy-drama.
If it's true, they'll have a job bringing the cast back together - some have gone on to be huge telly and film stars, while others have stepped out of the spotlight entirely...
James Nesbitt
Nesbitt's carefree lothario Adam Williams met his match in Helen Baxendale's Rachel - the couple overcame infidelity and infertility but were denied lasting happiness when Rachel was killed in a traffic accident.
Since Cold Feet wrapped, Nesbitt has become one of British television's most in-demand leading men.
He fronted BBC One's gritty cop series Murphy's Law from 2003-07, led Steven Moffat's supernatural thriller Jekyll - also in 2007 - and played the title character in ITV's short-lived medical drama Monroe (2011-12).

Robson Green thinks a Us remake of his noughties ITV series Wire in the Blood could be "brilliant".
The crime thriller was being eyed for adaptation by ABC - though the network later passed on the project.
Green, though, told Digital Spy that the show - in which he played psychologist Dr. Tony Hill - still has the potential to be a Us smash-hit.
"The script was written - there was some amazing talk on who could play Tony Hill," the actor said. "Everyone from Guy Pearce to Billy Bob Thornton.
"They'd Americanize it [and] they'd do a brilliant job. American TV - the high-end stuff - is exceptional. They'd have made a great job of it, but it wasn't picked up - never mind."
Green also ruled out ever reprising the role of Tony if a Us remake did make it to the screen.
"No, I've done that," he said.

There must be something fashionable to the idea right now of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Hollywood now has four Robin Hood movies in production, more than anyone really needs, perhaps even the poor. Tuesday Deadline reported that Warner Bros. had “quietly” put a new Robin Hood movie into production, this one being developed by the script writer for the upcoming Aquaman movie Will Beall. Deadline counts three others for it to storm the castle with: a family friendly swashbuckler from Disney called Nottingham & Hood, a Batman Begins style origin story aptly titled Robin Hood: Origins, and one from Sony that’s described as “Fast & Furious meets Mission: Impossible style reinvention of the tale.” With those four incredibly original ideas, anyone think this is the rich stealing from the poor?

"Fifty Shades of Grey" was a massive hit for Universal Pictures, grossing almost $570 million worldwide on a budget of $40 million. The next installment has already been announced, but author El James has been demanding some changes. Sam Taylor-Johnson won't return as the director and now comes word that James has convinced the studio to hire her husband, Niall Leonard to write the script for "Fifty Shades Darker." Leonard worked on the British series "Wire in the Blood" and "Wild at Heart." He also did uncredited rewrites on the first film. "Fifty Shades Darker" will bring back Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele. It's expected to hit theaters in 2017. A director has yet to be hired.

Niall Leonard will be writing the screenplay to Fifty Shades Of Grey follow-up, Fifty Shades Darker...
With over a half a billion dollars banked from this year's Fifty Shades Of Grey movie, it's surprising that it's taken Universal Pictures so long to get moving on the second book of E L James' trilogy, Fifty Shades Darker. But, as you probably know, things haven't really been too straightforward.
Director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who was signed up to direct the entire trilogy of Fifty Shades films, quit the sequel. It had been little secret that she and E L James didn't exactly see eye to eye, and given that James has creative sign-off over the movies, it was a fight that ultimately only one person could win.
Also not returning is screenwriter Kelly Marcel. And the report had been that James herself was to have a go at penning the script for Fifty Shades Darker.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" author E.L. James has enlisted her husband Niall Leonard to pen the script for "Fifty Shades Darker," the upcoming film adaptation of the second book in her 'Fifty Shades' novel trilogy.
Leonard is an author who has also worked on numerous British TV productions including acclaimed shows like "Wire in the Blood," "Monarch of the Glen" and "Hornblower".
Leonard worked on the script for the first 'Fifty Shades' film but was not credited. In a statement, producer Michael De Luca says: "Niall is an outstanding writer in his own right, with multiple established credits, and we are lucky to have him join Team Fifty."
Neither the first film's director Sam Taylor-Johnson or screenwriter Kelly Marcel are returning for the sequel. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan are attached to reprise their roles in the film which has yet to set a production start date.

I have to admit, I never saw this coming, but with the mass exodus from the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise following the release of the first film -- both screenwriter Kelly Marcel and director Sam Taylor-Johnson are not returning -- word was author E.L. James wanted to write the screenplay for the film's sequel, Fifty Shades Darker. Well, it turns out that ain't happening, but in James' case it seems they may have got the next best thing, her husband, Niall Leonard. THR has the news and come to learn Leonard has written for several TV shows since the mid-'90s, though, admittedly none I'd ever heard of. The film' producer, Michael De Luca, however seems on the Leonard train saying, "Niall is an outstanding writer in his own right, with multiple established credits, and we are lucky to have him join Team Fifty." While the search continues for a new author-approved director to replace the recently-exited Sam Taylor-Johnson, Fifty Shades Darker now at least has a screenwriter. The sequel to Fifty Shades Of Grey will be adapted from E.L. James's novel by Niall Leonard. This will have gone down well with James, because Leonard is her husband. It should mean, if you will, that screenwriter and author stay on the same page, avoiding the 'creative differences' that dogged the first movie.Leonard doesn't yet have any other big screen or Hollywood credits to his name, but does have a long background in British TV. He wrote episodes of Wire In The Blood, Wild At Heart, Monarch Of The Glen and Hornblower, among many others (there's a smutty Hornblower / Fifty Shades joke here somewhere, but we'll leave you to make it yourselves). He also directed episodes of The Bill. It's further evidence of...

The studio got a $567 million global grosser out of that deal, but finally they have to deal with a writer with a lot of power. For the second installment "Fifty Shades Darker," they lost director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who fought with the opinionated James during production. Many wondered if studio chief Donna Langley, who pursued the project and landed it, would give James the assignment to write the next screenplay. Now Variety reports that James's husband Niall Leonard (British TV's “Wild at Heart” and “Wire in the Blood") will adapt the screenplay for “Fifty Shades Darker.” Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan will return as the kinky lovers of the piece, as James, Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca produce. De Luca recently left his job as Sony production chief to return to full-time producing, moving his production shingle to Universal. Next up: finding a director who can handle intimate sex scenes and work cooperatively with James.

You may not know the name Niall Leonard, but he's the better (maybe kinkier?) half of E.L. James, the best-selling author of the "Fifty Shades Of Grey" trilogy. As has been well-documented by now, she's been very vocal about the big screen adaptation of her work, battling director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who has since departed the franchise. One of the holdups in getting "Fifty Shades Darker" going has been settling on a screenwriter — James wanted to write the script herself, Universal would rather her not. Well, a solution has been found. The aforementioned Niall Leonard has been tasked with the gig. He's a writer for British television ("Wire In The Blood," "Wild At Heart"), and surely his famous wife, who has very particular demands about her cinematic erotica, will have no influence on his adaptation. (Yes indeed folks, that's sarcasm). But we suppose Universal is just happy the matter is settled.

"Sherlock" may not return for its fourth season until -- say it ain't so -- 2017, due to the hectic film schedules of in-demand stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. In the meantime, you can rewatch all three seasons and soon you can binge on Cumberbatch in "The Imitation Game" and Freeman in "The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies." But what then?
If you're craving more veddy British crime solving, you don't have far to look. Here are some of the best series the BBC (and ITV) has to offer, with private detectives, psychiatrists, cops, spies, and forensic pathologists all cracking cases, catching criminals and drinking lots of tea.

If it's more Sherlock you crave (and not just Mr. Cumberbatch), then you must see Jeremy Brett's intensely intellectual (and equally arrogant) period-appropriate take on the legendary detective. This Watson is also solid, especially in "The House of the Baskervilles.

Yet another gritty British detective drama is scoring a remake by a U.S. broadcast network, this time it's ABC developing a series adaptation of the psychological thriller "Wire in the Blood" based on Val McDermid's novels and ITV's well-regarded TV show which ran from 2002-2008.
Robson Green starred in the original as Dr. Tony Hill, an unconventional and eccentric clinical psychologist with a talent for catching serial killers and empathising with both victim and killer. He works with the police in the fictional West Yorkshire town of Bradfield to help solve cases.
The U.S. version shifts the action to New York City where someone has been killing women and a detective named Elizabeth Chase brings this new version of Tony Hill in to help. Author/TV writer A.M. Homes (The L Word") will pen the script for the remake which ABC Studios, Endemol Studios and Mandeville Films will produce.

"Sherlock" and "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat says there are no plans for the BBC's "Sherlock" to hit the big screen.
The show follows the format of various British crime dramas from classics like "Inspector Morse" and "Wire in the Blood," to more modern ones like "Vera" and "Wallander," which opt for only a few episodes a series (ie. 3-4). Each episode, however, runs feature length (90-110 minutes).
Thus each episode is essentially a movie anyway, albeit produced on a much tighter budget and schedule, Moffat sees little reason for a big screen outing. He tells The Mirror:
"Well we do make films, we make three every eighteen months. I don’t know, there would have to be a significant reason why you’d do it.
Films, for some reason, take much longer to make so you would be reducing the amount of ‘Sherlock’ you’re getting. If there was...

I did the whole film school thing – but not until I was 26 – when I got divorced. Jacked my old life and just went for it. I’m heavily tattooed, white, Irish trailer trash. Didn’t know anybody in the business whatsoever, nobody famous, nada, nout, zero, naught, nothing. And, apart from the lasting friendships formed, film school was fucking waste of time! Spent years being lied to, being skint, sleeping on people’s floors. Did every shit job imaginable – anything to pay the rent. We’ve all done it, I know. Only thing I got from it was learning that if you want it, you have to do it yourself. Actually, a little caveat to that: the editor on my current gig was actually in my class at film school – so retrospectively I guess I did get something out of it (19 years later). Now, I’m a jobbing director – been fortunate enough to have worked on some...
