The series is based on the best-known novel of Edmondo De Amicis (1846-1908), who was a life-long supporter of Italian nationalism, an experienced officer of the Italian Army, and a veteran of the Third Italian War of Independence (1866). The novel is a hymn to patriotism, and it has found an audience in nationalist movements both within and outside Italy since its original publication in the 19th century.
