In my personal opinion, this series was a misunderstood masterpiece. Cubix was ahead of its time.
This show was my absolute favorite as a kid and stayed with me for years, made me feel so hopeful for the future. Turns out the aesthetic of the show is heavily influenced by the design style called "Frutiger aero". Probably one of the most Frutiger aero pieces of media ever to exist, honestly.
People make fun of cubix saying it's animation is ugly or dated but Cinepix was a small animation company competing with giants! I'm still blown away by what they were able to achieve at the time. The graphics were revolutionary but no one cared because it wasn't pixar or made in the west.
Cubix has an incredible look and feel, a coziness, a familiarity despite being set in the future that is so different from most science fiction. It's a suburban sci-fi, fantasy that feels like it could happen in your own backyard. It's a utopian take on AI where machines become our friends, making Cubix rather unique and refreshing. There's also quite a bit of lore in the show that's completely overlooked and the music is unforgettable. You can tell the team at Cinepix poured their whole heart into this series, it was clearly made with love.
