Rama's long hair symbolises his uniqueness. It was very unusual for a warrior (especially a prince) to have such long hair. Rama however kept it long to show he is not a warrior but a fighter for peace.

In the Hindi Dub of the film when Ravan's army rally up the words Mahakal are uttered. Mahakal is another name for Lord Shiva. Ravana is sometimes said to be a devotee of Lord Shiva.
There are many scenes where Rama's long black hair is shown majestically moving in the wind. This shows the beauty and soft side of Rama.
