The Pokémon anime is rather unique for reinventing itself every few years, a trend which helped to give the series such incredible longevity. These changes involved not only new characters and a new setting, but a revamp for Ash as well, changing his appearance and, to some extent, his personality as well.
Fans have endlessly debated which versions of Ash are the best, and they often align with which series have the best writing in general. To rank these different versions of Ash Ketchum, several factors are being considered, such as his design and appearance, his likability, and his performance in battle. This will hopefully reflect the different criteria by which fans have judged these iterations over the years, and provide a single combined ranking that accommodates all of them.
Unova Ash Pokémon: Black and White
In last place is the version of Ash seen in the Black and White anime series.

George Folsey Jr., the film editor and producer who collaborated with director John Landis on such films as Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Coming to America and An American Werewolf in London, has died. He was 85.
Folsey died Sunday in Los Angeles of complications from pneumonia, his son, fellow film editor Ryan Folsey (Cabin Fever, Renfield), told The Hollywood Reporter.
His father was George J. Folsey, the famed 13-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer whose credits included The Cocoanuts (1929), Animal Crackers (1930), Thousands Cheer (1944), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), The Clock (1945), Green Dolphin Street (1947), Adam’s Rib (1949), Million Dollar Mermaid (1953), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and Forbidden Planet (1956).
George Folsey Jr. also edited Shawn Levy’s Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) and The Pink Panther (2006) and Eli Roth’s Hostel (2005) and Hostel: Part II (2007).
After cutting Landis’ directorial debut, Schlock (1973), Folsey edited the Landis-helmed The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977), Animal House (1978), The Blues Brothers (1980) and Coming to America (1988), which he also produced.

Classic rock manages to find its way into many genres. For example, Mariah Carey’s “Joy to the World” includes a heavy dose of a classic rock song from the 1970s. It’s pretty easy to understand why Carey made this decision. Interestingly, a member of the band behind the original tune did something similar.
Mariah Carey’s ‘Joy to the World’ combines a religious song with rock ‘n’ roll nonsense
A good Christmas album should include a mix of the new and the old. Carey’s Merry Christmas is most famous for the original composition “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” However, it also includes covers of standards like “Silent Night,” “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” and “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” First-time listeners might be surprised that Merry Christmas is pretty religious for a pop Christmas album, especially considering Carey’s big Christmas hit is entirely secular.

With the official announcement of new sets for the Pokmon Trading Card Game, the upcoming releases could be hinting at the next Pokmon remakes. As fans wait for the release of Pokmon Legends: Z-a, newly announced Tcg sets could be pointing toward upcoming remakes of the fifth generation as well.
As posted on PokBeach, two new Unova-themed Tcg sets, Black Bolt and White Flare, will be released on June 6, 2025, in Japan, potentially hinting at the planned release date for remakes of the Unova region games as well. Interior Chinatown's protagonist feels like he's a background character in someone else's story, which is exactly the premise of the new crime comedy series. Adapted from Charles Yu's 2020 novel of the same name, the show premiered November 19 on Hulu and centers Willis Wu (Silicon Valley's Jimmy O. Yang), a background actor playing out Asian American cliches in the police procedural Black and White. The "Generic Asian Man" gets a chance to level up, however, when he witnesses an abduction outside his uncle's restaurant, Golden Palace.
Every episode of Interior Chinatown intersects with the world of Willis' fictional cop show, which is led by Detective Sarah Green (Lisa Gilroy) and Detective Miles Turner (Sullivan Jones) and is as cookie-cutter as TV gets. But Black and White gets upended as well when Detective Lana Lee (Agents of Shield's Chloe Bennet) is brought in to deal with crime in Chinatown and...

In Hulu’s “Interior Chinatown,” Jimmy O. Yang stars as Willis Wu, a “generic Asian man” stuck in the background of police procedural show, whose luck begins to shift when he breaks into a leading role — a trajectory that resonated heavily with the actor.
“I felt that often in my life, especially when I first started as an actor,” Yang told TheWrap of the “almost invisible forces” holding Willis on the sidelines. “I was a background actor. I was Chinese teenager No. 1 in ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ a show that Chloe [Bennet] was the star in, actually.”
Like Willis, Yang explained he “snuck [his] way into being tech guy,” which he explains is “exactly what Willis has done in the book and in the show” as he secretly works with Detective Lana Lee (Bennet) to solve a string of crimes in Chinatown that could be related to the disappearance of his brother.

Interior Chinatown is a brand new series that has made its debut on Hulu, fresh from Charles Yu's 2020 novel of the same name. The comedy crime series centers on Willis Wu (Silicon Valley's Jimmy O. Yang), a waiter and aspiring actor whose biggest break thus far involves playing into Asian American stereotypes on a cop show called Black and White. He longs for a more interesting life, and the universe answers by letting him witness an abduction and getting him involved in a real-life investigation.
Chloe Bennet plays Willis' coworker Fatty Choi, who goes to the other extreme rather than ambition and adventure, he craves contentment and the quotidian.

Long-time Pokmon players likely know that there are a lot of unofficial Pokmon titles that are just as good as their official counterparts. These fan-made games are referred to as Rom hacks and are created by players accessing the Read-Only Memory (Rom) of an original game and making changes to it. Some Rom hacks are as simple as quality-of-life updates to improve on annoying aspects of an existing game, while others completely redesign the games story and style of play.
Rom hacks for Pokmon games have been around for ages at this point, meaning there is an overwhelming number of them to choose from. Some will likely appeal to certain players' niche interests but fail to gain widespread popularity. However, some of the better Rom hacks have become widely accepted as the best of their kind, with some players even preferring them to even the best Pokmon games.

It's important to note that personal information was also leaked, but the leakers appear to be working to keep that private to protect the individuals; only Pokmon-related content is being shared publicly.

The Pokmon Trading Card Game may be gearing up to return to the past if some new trademarks are to be believed. When it comes to the ever-popular tabletop game, The Pokmon Company usually does a decent amount of brand synergy by syncing set releases with recently launched video games, new seasons of the anime, or animated movies. With that in mind, it's undoubtedly odd that the publisher is seemingly looking back at one of the franchise's most beloved chapters rather than preparing for a future release.

The next Pokémon remakes are assumed to be the Generation 5 games, Black and White. However, Pokémon Emerald deserves a remake, even if the series has abandoned its third versions. There is precedent for self-contained remakes, like Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, and Emerald's sprite artwork provides an opportunity for a completely new remake style.
Although Pokémon Black and White seem like prime candidates for the next remakes in the Pokémon franchise, there's one classic game that could use the remake treatment first - Pokémon Emerald. Despite the fact that the series has essentially abandoned the idea of releasing third, more definitive versions of each generation's games, replacing them with Dlc expansions, there are still plenty of ideas from the original Pokémon Emerald on the Game Boy Advance that would get a better chance to shine in an all-new remake. The Black and White era of the Pokémon anime didn't go far enough in its attempt to reboot the franchise, and fans felt that Ash's character development was hindered as a result. Pokémon Horizons successfully rebooted the anime by introducing new protagonists, a more overarching story, and recurring adult characters, allowing for a fresh start and appealing to different audiences. Letting go of Ash has allowed Pokémon to embrace new ideas and bring a refreshing change to the franchise, benefiting both the series and its fans.
The Pokémon anime has been through many different eras over the course of its 25-year-long existence, some better received than others. One of the most controversial eras of the Pokémon anime among many fans is the Black and White era, the anime associated with the Unova region and the generation 5 Pokémon games. Pokémon's Ash Ketchum has collected dozens of badges over his career across six different regions, but there are two gym badges from the Unova region that Ash never had a chance to earn. Typically, Ash earns the eight badges available in the same generation's games, and while he's earned some unofficial badges here and there, he has always ended his time in a region with all eight of the canonical badges.
The Unova region is a bit special, in that it featured in not only Pokémon Black and White, but also in its sequels, Black 2 and White 2. While other regions have featured in remakes or enhanced versions (such as Platinum), none of them have ever had a direct sequel set a certain number of years later. That means that fans got a glimpse at two different states of the Pokémon League in Unova, and over that time some Black...

When a new generation of Pokémon is on the way, it's a natural marketing move to debut a few species early that are sure to be fan-favorites. While sometimes these new Pokémon appear in spinoff games or other media, the most common place for a brand new, never-before-seen Pokémon to make its pre-release debut is the anime. This helps build excitement among the most dedicated fans and even gets people who might not otherwise watch the Pokémon anime to tune in, if only to see a new Pokémon for the first time.
Sometimes these new Pokémon are a major feature of an episode or movie, or even become recurring characters across multiple episodes. Other times, it's a simple cameo, teasing that the vast world of Pokémon still has plenty of surprises in it. The entries on this list are ranked primarily by how significant their appearance is, but what makes...

There are many episodes of the Pokémon anime that have never aired in the US, but there are only a handful of episodes that have never aired anywhere--even Japan. Now, the script for two such lost episodes has been made public, giving fans their first glimpse at the showdown that could've been between two of Pokémon's evil Teams.
At the beginning of the Black and White era of the anime, the series began building up to a confrontation between Team Rocket, making their first moves into the Unova region, and Team Plasma, the established force in the region. Team Rocket was "rebooted" a bit, giving Jessie and James dark uniforms and a more competent, professional air. The two teams were poised to clash at last in the 23 and 24th episodes of the series... but then the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake struck, causing massive damage across Japan and delaying the airing of the Pokémon episodes.

Any potential remakes of Pokémon Black and White would do well to learn from what is perhaps Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s own greatest mistake. Pokémon Black and White are the principal titles of Generation 5, following on from Gen 4’s Diamond and Pearl. As such, they are the most likely candidates for the next Pokémon remakes to be produced.
When they were first released, Pokémon Black and White were hated by many fans, although critical reception was quite positive. Reasons for this included the fact that Black and White’s regional Pokédex was entirely composed of new species (excluding post-game content). What’s more, some of the new designs, such as the Vanillite line, were touted as unoriginal. On the other hand, the actual plot of Pokémon Black and White was greatly praised. The games notably also included the first animated Pokémon battle sprites, although the paper doll-like...

Batman is often accused of seeing the world in black and white, so it’s fitting that a recent cosplay would take that to the extreme. Cosplay artist Superior Mike 3D recently shared a remarkable piece that looks like it could have stepped off of the printed page.
Shared via Instagram, Superior Mike 3D's Batman cosplay uses the Batsuit found in the Arkham games as a starting point, utilizing the armored, hi-tech look as opposed to the Dark Knight’s traditional comic book outfit.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Superior Mike 3D (@mike_dd3d)
But through some stunning paint work, Mike is able to give his Bat-armor a graphic look that recreates the stark chiaroscuro of black and white comics like Frank Miller’s Sin City, making his Batman look like he just stepped off the comic book page.

She was photographed by Warhol, and Dalí wanted to paint her; the first films she made were Death in Venice and Cabaret. So why did she walk away?
Most people, says Marisa Berenson, “tend to live in my past. Which is fine.” She smiles, well aware of the fascination. “But I tend to live in the present and in the future.” A 2001 profile of the model/actor in the New York Times described her as a “Zelig of the zeitgeist … popping up in the right place at the right time”. And there is certainly something magical about her life and the people who have passed through it. As a child (she is now 72) she was taught to dance by Gene Kelly. Country Radio Seminar (Crs) isn’t usually the kind of place for grand statements — if anything, the annual gathering of country radio programmers in Nashville is a time when artists play it safe in hopes of scoring some eventual airtime. You strum your single, you crack a joke. You offend no one. But, once in a while, a moment happens.

On October 22, after reading Glenn Whipp’s incendiary James Toback investigation in the La Times, Becky Wahlstrom scoured her journals. A veteran actress whose credits include “Joan of Arcadia” and “Mad Men,” she was 23 when she wrote a seven-and-a-half page entry on August 13, 1998 that described meeting Toback at the Beverly Hills Hotel for approximately five hours the night before.
Ostensibly, it was an audition for his film “Black and White”; Toback requested the meeting after seeing her deliver two lines in Don Roos’ “The Opposite of Sex.” She went to the audition without sides; she loved the idea that Toback liked to build his roles around his actors, a philosophy she embraced while studying at the Piven Theatre Workshop in Chicago.

You may have seen Jurassic Park a dozen times, but there loads of details that are easy to miss. Details like these...
Last week, visual effects artist Todd Vaziri took to Twitter to shatter the illusions of Jurassic Park fans everywhere. "When people watch this 24-year old mega-blockbuster," he tweeted, "they point and laugh at the totally obvious disappearing raptor on each viewing, ya?"
See related James Bond 007: revisiting Never Say Never Again
What, Todd? The what!?
Alongside this tweet, Vaziri also posted a slowed down Gif of the moment in question and - yep - there it is. During the final set piece, in which the T-Rex (somehow silently) stomps into the Visitor's Centre and gobbles up the Velociraptors, one of the Raptors disappears. Not eaten by the Rex, just gone. One frame, she's there, the next she's not, the following one she's there again.

Robert Redford movies: TCM shows 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,' 'The Sting' They don't make movie stars like they used to, back in the days of Louis B. Mayer, Jack Warner, and Harry Cohn. That's what nostalgists have been bitching about for the last four or five decades; never mind the fact that movie stars have remained as big as ever despite the demise of the old studio system and the spectacular rise of television more than sixty years ago. This month of January 2015, Turner Classic Movies will be honoring one such post-studio era superstar: Robert Redford. Beginning this Monday evening, January 6, TCM will be presenting 15 Robert Redford movies. Tonight's entries include Redford's two biggest blockbusters, both directed by George Roy Hill and co-starring Paul Newman: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which turned Redford, already in his early 30s, into a major film star to rival Rudolph Valentino,...

Mike Binder's Black or White is getting a little Oscar run starting today, but it won't be hitting a larger number of theaters until January 23 next year, and then expanding wide a week later on January 30. Relativity is hoping for some kind of Oscar love for the pic, but considering the chasm of mixed opinions on the film I'm not expecting it to gain much attention if any. I have a screener here, but given the negative review from friend of the site, Kevin Jagernauth, over at The Playlist I hesitate to even hit play. Then again, I also trust Jeff Wells at Hollywood-Elsewhere when it comes to his opinions on movies and he loved it... What's thatc Maybe I should just watch it for myself you're rushing off to the comments to hammer away on your keyboardc Okay, I probably will, after all, I really liked Binder's under-appreciated Reign Over Me.

It’s white-knuckle time for the Napa Valley Film Festival’s organizers, filmmakers and fans, with a key venue and two hotels still fixing earthquake damage ahead of the Nov. 12 opening night. The post-quake craziness comes just as the four-year-old event is getting traction in Hollywood for its Oscar Season-adjacent timing, with companies setting encore screenings and star appearances, to tout awards contenders from earlier in the year.
The festival bills itself a mix of film, food and, of course, wine, with its own wine director pouring bottles from 150 of the region’s best-regarded vineyards. A recent Los Angeles event spotlighting the festival featured The Weinstein Co. President David Glasser, who said his company will use it to push awareness of several TWC awards contenders. Among those projects: The Imitation Game, with festival appearances scheduled for director Morten Tyldum and cast members for the biopic about martyred cryptography pioneer Alan Turing.

The next thing I knew, I was making a list of my favorite Batman things–the movies, the TV shows, the vividly recalled comic book story arcs and standalone issues,...

The 2014 Oscar clock is running out for powerful, but still unsold, festival showpieces starring Jennifers Aniston and Connelly, as well as Kevin Costner and Richard Gere.
Several unspoken-for films came into this year’s Toronto International Film Festival determined not only to find a distributor, but to set a 2014 release date. In the case of Still Alice, the touching drama of a woman’s descent into early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, that plan worked spectacularly well. It had a stirring world-premiere screening on Sept. 8 in a less-visible afternoon slot at Tiff and quickly sparked Oscar buzz for star Julianne Moore, a four-time nominee who has never won.

Kevin Costner came into the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday for the world premiere of his powerful new drama, Black And White, a stirring story dealing with our racial divide, but mostly a riveting human tale from writer/director Mike Binder. It’s unflinchingly honest and contains a crackerjack courtroom scene that’s priceless. In that scene, Costner delivers perhaps the best performance of his career, or at least since the period of his career circa Field Of Dreams. It played to a packed house yesterday at Roy Thomson Hall and won a strong ovation from the crowd.
Costner told me that even the though the hard-hitting film is not a comedy, the audience responded with laughs in just the right places and really seemed to be moved by what they saw on screen.

"The Giver" is the latest dystopian thriller to follow an attractive teen who must fight against the totalitarian authority of misguided adults. And if that sounds like every other post-apocalyptic young adult film ever, keep in mind that at least "The Giver" came out a decade or two before such recent Ya offerings as "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent." Directed by Phillip Noyce (his first feature since 2010's Angelina Jolie thriller "Salt") and starring an impressive cast (producer Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard, and a nearly unrecognizable Taylor Swift).
Based on Lois Lowry's best seller, "The Giver" focuses on a utopian community where there's no discrimination, war, pain, or hate but also no love, emotion, art, or joy. The goal is "Sameness."
