Though his most recognizable show may be ‘The Simpsons’, Matt Groening’s ‘Futurama’ season 12 is reliably funny and always relevant. In its second season at its new home on Hulu, things are no different. From obsolete media to NFTs, from 80s flashbacks to the year 3024, the commentary on the present through the lens of a distant future is relatable, accessible, and intelligent without giving up its entertainment potential. ‘Futurama’ season 12 does what ‘Futurama’ has always done well, while still breaking down new ideas and amping up its production with the freedom afforded by its reboot with a new host. The Olympics brought in very strong streaming numbers for Peacock during the first full week of the games. For other streamers? Not so much.
No original series or movie made the overall top 10 titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of July 29-Aug. 4. That’s a first in the four-year history of the weekly rankings, according to the ratings service. Streaming levels outside of the Olympics “decreased significantly” during the week, Nielsen says.
House of the Dragon, however, continued its strong showing on Max (since the show also airs on HBO, Nielsen considers it an acquired series rather than an original). The Game of Thrones prequel topped the week leading up to its second season finale with 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, up from 1.04 billion a week earlier and its best mark of the season so far.

Eagle-eyed anime lovers are buzzing with excitement: Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the renowned manga series One Piece has just announced that it cast an Emmy-nominated star for a pivotal role in its widely anticipated second season.
Katey Sagal, who is most recognized for her voice and film roles as Leela in “Futurama” and Peggy Bundy in “Married…with Children,” is the actress in question for this part. Sagal will provide the voice of Dr. Kureha, the much-awaited new character in the series.
Casting And Production Details
Sagal’s casting was officially confirmed by the streaming giant, following months of speculation. The role was first suggested as a potential fit for Jamie Lee Curtis, the Oscar-winning actress for her work in 2018’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Family Guy will have another network home this September. In a recent licensing deal, Disney granted permission for Paramount to broadcast on their network, Comedy Central. The animated comedy follows the Griffin family's chaotic and often dysfunctional life in Quahog, Rhode Island.
Deadline was the first to report the deal between the major networks, and Family Guy will join Beavis and Butt-head, Futurama, and Comedy Central's very own South Park in the primetime schedule. The negotiation will not reflect Family Guy being removed from Fox, Fxx, or its streamer, Hulu. It just means the show will have an additional channel to air, accumulating more fans into Family Guy's strong fanbase.
Season 23 will premiere on Fox's 2025 midseason schedule and be part of the Animation Domination block, a move that hasn't been made in nearly two decades. The network's decision is disappointing as Fox had to make room for their new show,...

Something went viral on social media over the last week, and I kind of hate it.
The video is a faux trailer for a “live-action” movie adaptation of The Simpsons, featuring a succession of famous actors as the main Simpsons characters.
Amongst those at play are Adam Sandler as Homer Simpson, and Kristen Wiig as Marge. Jacob Tremblay “plays” Bart, McKenna Grace portrays Lisa, and Will Ferrell stands in for Ned Flanders.
Steve Buscemi plays C. Montgomery Burns, Neil Patrick Harris as Smithers, Ben Stiller as Moe, and John C. Reilly as Barney. Steve Carell is Principal Skinner, Zach Galifianakis is Chief Wiggum, and Kumail Nanjiani is Apu.

In the "Futurama" episode "Where No Fan Has Gone Before", the hapless Fry (Billy West) learns that "Star Trek" has been banned in the 31st century. He visits the severed head of Leonard Nimoy, kept alive in a jar of fluid, hoping to learn more about the fate of "Star Trek." Nimoy, knowing about the ban, initially pleads ignorance. Fry, trying to remind him, describes "Star Trek" as a 1960s TV that had "76 episodes. About 30 good ones."
Nimoy eventually confesses to remembering "Star Trek," but Fry's description of the show's quality isn't wholly unfair. Gene Roddenberry's original "Star Trek" series had many highs, providing popular sci-fi with some of its most indelible images. Additionally, its vision of a country-less, money-free, diplomacy-forward, anti-colonialist future inspired many to be optimistic about things to come. But it can also be true that the show churned out more than its share of stinkers.

Fans of the animated comedy Futurama were thrilled to see a familiar joke make a surprise comeback in Season 12 on Hulu. In the fourth episode titled “Beauty and the Bug,” the robot Bender finds himself startled by his friend Amy Wong. As a reaction, Bender says “Amy! You scared me brickless!”
This line directly references a running gag from the show’s 1999 pilot episode. Early on, it was established that Bender would literally expel bricks from his body when experiencing intense fear. Analysts noted the joke cleverly combines the sayings “shitting bricks” and “being scared shitless.” However, to the character Bender, his statement likely just describes his fear reaction without the idioms.
While the visual of Bender ejecting bricks has only occasionally recurred, its reappearance delighted longtime viewers. As one analyst stated, Bender’s extreme fear response is an established part of his character but losing its humor if used too frequently.

According to Futurama creator Matt Groening, a decade off the air was a welcome break for the series — after all, look how much better Fry’s life got when he took that thousand-year sabbatical.
Late last month, Futurama Season 12 opened with a not-so-timely takedown of Non-Fungible Tokens that confusingly included a solid seven minutes of expository dialogue describing the principles of cryptology behind 2021’s hottest get-rich-quick scheme. The fan backlash to “The One Amigo” and criticisms of the outdated topical humor provoked an irate reaction from Futurama star and Bender voice-actor John Dimaggio, who told the naysayers to “bite my shiny metal ass!” if they don’t like the pop-culture jokes in the new episodes. Still, some Futurama fans continue to questioning whether or not the series has enough novel ideas left for the next two and a half seasons of its Hulu deal.

Sometimes, the price of telling a risky joke is a bad review, but that’s not the same thing as censorship — otherwise, Matt Groening would be in prison.
In the nearly 35 years since The Simpsons took over TV comedy, Groening has seen innumerable cultural debates over line-crossing in comedy come and go while artfully avoiding excess participation in any such dialogue. Though The Simpsons has long faced calls for censorship or increased sensitivity when it comes specific jokes — even from the literal censors at Fox, whom Groening generally ignores — the series doesn’t habitually thumb its nose at such critics the way their rivals over at Family Guy so often do. At the same time, The Simpsons doesn’t exactly engage in what most comedy fans would call “edgy humor,” so it’s not often that the series ever finds itself smack-dab in the center of the comedy culture war...

In the "Futurama" episode "The Luck of the Fryrish", Fry (Billy West) becomes increasingly concerned about his lack of good luck in the 31st century. He loses at horse races, loses his last dollar, and loses all his hair when he is struck by lightning. Fry figures that his lack of good luck stems from the fact that he lost a lucky talisman when he was a youth. Fry used to have a seven-leaf clover that brought him good fortune, and made him lucky enough to beat his jealous older brother Yancy (Tom Kenny) at basketball. Although Fry had been cryogenically frozen for 1,000 years, he figures his seven-leaf clover is still locked in his childhood safe, preserved in the subterranean ruins of old New York. Into the sewers he must go.

Futurama not only entertains with its witty humor and charismatic characters, but also surprises with its ability to predict our reality.
Since its debut in 1999, the show has introduced many futuristic technologies and events that later became reality.
1. The Series Has Landed – Season 1 Episode 2
The team sets off for Luna Park. As they approach, the team admires the scenery and make plans for the evening – checking out the rides and rescuing the local aliens.
Thanks to Bender's skills and Leela's leadership, they solve any problems that arise, and Amy suggests asking her parents for money to pay for new rides, which leads to an argument among the team about using her family's wealth.
In this episode, Amy was briefly shown playing virtual skeeball. This was the closest the creators have come to showing what the virtual reality headsets will look like and how to use them.

Exclusive: Family Guy is set to air on Comedy Central as part of an adult animation block after the Paramount network struck a licensing deal with Disney.
The deal will see the Seth MacFarlane-created series launch on Comedy Central on September 2, joining animated series such as South Park, Futurama, and Beavis and Butt-Head.
It highlights the fact that while licensing deals for network shows on cable is a rarity in the new world of streaming, it isn’t completely dead. The deal is non-exclusive with prior seasons continuing to air on FX and Fxx, while Hulu is the exclusive streaming home of the show.
It comes after Family Guy is being moved to midseason on Fox, the first time that Peter Griffin and his family aren’t on the fall schedule. Family Guy, as well as The Simpsons, are heading into its final season of a two-season renewal. Hulu...

Hundreds of members of the Animation Guild, along with fellow IATSE members joining in solidarity, gathered at the IATSE 80 headquarters in Burbank on Saturday ahead of Monday’s start of contract negotiations.
The crowd was over twice that of the Guild’s previous rally in 2022. Animation writer and negotiating committee member Joey Clift told TheWrap that the union had over 2,000 RSVPs as of Friday, doubling the number of the 2022 event. In December, Disney+ will become the exclusive home of this year’s Simpsons holiday special, showing that the “evil corporation” is evil enough to steal Christmas from the non-subscribers of the Simpsons fandom.
While many Disney originals have struggled to gain much traction on the media mega-company’s flagship streaming service, The Simpsons continues to dominate Disney+ viewership metrics where it is currently the third most watched series on the platform by daily viewers. On top of that, back at the beginning of 2023, The Simpsons was still the single most popular streaming title in Disney+ history, even beating out massive IP hits like The Mandalorian and WandaVision on its way to becoming the all-time #1 Disney+ show.
With the continued popularity of The Simpsons in mind, Disney has decided to change course on its Simpsons strategy as it prepare to make Disney+ the exclusive home of four special Simpsons episodes to premiere this December.

Animated shows have taken off majorly over the last few decades. Obviously, fans love the likes of The Simpsons, Family Guy and Futurama while scores of other streamers have many of them. Most are from network or cable while streamers want to try more original fare.
Paramount+ is among them with most of their animated fare coming from Nickelodeon and aimed at kids. That includes Spongebob Squarepants, Paw Patrol and Transformers. However, there are a few animated shows on the streamer that can appeal more to grown-ups and here’s a few to check out on the service!
Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Last year, the Heroes in a Halfshell made a big return to movies with the hit animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

If the Futurama subreddit doesn’t “zip it” with their criticisms of Season 12’s pop-culture-heavy plot lines, John Dimaggio, the legendary voice actor who plays Bender Rodriguez, might just start his own fan forum with blackjack and hookers.
We’re only two episodes into the second of four planned seasons in Hulu’s Futurama revival, but a vocal contingency within the cult-beloved sci-fi comedy’s fandom is already wondering whether the well has run dry on original episode ideas. Last week, the series premiere “The One Amigo” gave fans a long-winded explanation of the cryptologic principles behind Non-Fungible Tokens, also known as NFTs, also known as that annoying tech bro trend that ruined Twitter for a few months back in 2021. Then, yesterday’s episode, “Quids Game,” was an equally timely-ish parody of the hit Netflix series Squid Game, also from 2021, also demonstrating how the show that’s supposed to be...

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? It turns out Abner Doubledeal, Dean Suspendington, and the Masked Unity do. Those are all characters voiced by the inimitable Tom Kenny.
Most audiences likely know Kenny's work playing SpongeBob SquarePants, the title character from one of Nickelodeon's biggest shows ever. SpongeBob is a childlike sea sponge, shaped like a kitchen sponge, who lives in blissful joy in his pineapple shaped house in Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob has achieved his dream of being a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, his favorite burger joint, and is rarely seem without a smile on his oblivious face. "SpongeBob SquarePants" debuted in 1999 and has been running ever since, occasionally pausing for a feature film or a spinoff series. The show's creator, Stephen Hillernburg, passed in 2018.
Kenny has been loyal to SpongeBob ever since 1999, but the character is only one small piece of a long comedy career.

Time is flying faster than Rhaenys fell to her death this season on “House of the Dragon,” which is to say, wow, somehow the Season 2 finale of the “Game of Thrones” spin-off is already upon us.
Despite multiple clips leaking on social media earlier this week after what HBO referred to as an “unintentional release from an international third-party distributor,” the finale (airing Sunday at 9/8 on HBO and Max) is still the most anticipated watch of the weekend that isn’t related to the Summer Olympics. In the penultimate episode, Emma D’Arcy’s Queen Rhaenyra was last seen gathering an unconventional group of dragonriders — including a blacksmith and a drunk — to set the stage for the finale’s major conflict with Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), who fled to King’s Landing when he saw Rhaenyra’s growing forces. If you’ve read the source material, you likely know how this will end.

The 2024 Paris Olympics are in full swing, which means that there are plenty of Olympic controversies. So far, they have included spy drones, Blue Man Group-esque Greek gods and an aquatic venue that’s contaminated with raw sewage/bloated Minion corpses.
Well, now there’s a pretty major debate concerning women’s boxing. A recent fight between Italian boxer Angela Carini and Algerian contender Imane Khelif ended after just 46 seconds, with the victory going to Khelif, one of two boxers at the Olympics who “failed to meet gender eligibility tests at the Women’s World Boxing Championships” in 2023.
Now the bout is being criticized by everyone from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, to Donald Trump, to J.K. “I missed the point of my own stories” Rowling.
It should be noted that Khelif is not a male, and is not a trans woman, yet her win has sparked a major transphobic backlash across the internet.

Fry, Leela, and the Planet Express crew have had their fair share of ups and downs throughout Futurama’s history as it was cancelled and brought back.
Matt Groening’s other smash hit animated comedy, Futurama, just won’t seem to die. The series has persisted for 25 years, through multiple cancelations and changes in where it has aired.
Fortunately for fans of the laugh-a-minute sci-fi ‘toon, Futurama hasn’t seemed to have lost a step despite all that instability.

The comedy show that’s supposed to be a full millennium ahead of modern society probably shouldn’t be playing catch-up with Twitter over tech jokes.
Remember back in late 2021 when an internet that was eager to get in on the ground floor of the next Bitcoin bubble suddenly exploded with speculation over multi-million-dollar sales of digital art? Back then, tech evangelists with an undisclosed amount of skin in the game promised a world that was mostly ignorant of the capabilities of cryptography that Non-Fungible Tokens were the future of art, entertainment, finance, healthcare and every other industry that the tech bros themselves barely understood.

Good news, everyone: Even though Futurama has been killed off and resurrected more times than Jason Voorhees, now it’s back for season 12. And while two more 10-episode seasons have already been given the go-ahead, one can’t help but wonder: where will the show go from there? Will it get canceled yet again, then brought back at some future date, possibly when the cast members are all just heads in jars?
Seeing as the show has sustained a loyal fan base for the past quarter century, why not make the next logical step by bringing Futurama to the big screen? Surely multiplexes all over the world would be packed full of Futurama fans and/or connoisseurs of jerks who pick fights in movie theaters.

Is Futurama the Rodney Dangerfield of adult animation?
John Dimaggio, the actor who voices Bender, believes the show gets no respect. From shuffling time slots to actual cancellations, Matt Groening’s other creation has “been getting the short end of the stick for a while,” Dimaggio told Newsweek.
Let’s count the ways in which Futurama has received the Dangerfield treatment:
Groening conceived the show as a companion to The Simpsons, a self-created superblock of cartoon comedy. Fox had other ideas, using Futurama as a utility player and plugging it into various holes in its primetime lineup so that audiences were never sure where to find it. “When we were on Fox, I was working on King of the Hill and Futurama at the time,” said David Herman, another one of the show’s voice actors. “We were on at 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. — and Fox’s slogan...

In the "Futurama" episode "I Second That Emotion", the crass alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio), having become fed up with Leela's pet whatsit Nibbler (Frank Welker), flushes him down the toilet. Leela (Katey Sagal) is distraught, but Bender is fecklessly unapologetic. The Professor (Billy West) finds that Bender may be incapable of empathy, and solves the issue by hammering a high-tech emotions chip into his head. The chip psychically links to Leela, and Bender begins feeling horrible. To solve their mutual sadness, Bender and Leela decide to go into the sewers to rescue Nibbler.
In the lore of "Futurama," the ruins of Old New York are deep underground and the city of New New York was built on its ruins.

As if anyone needed more proof that Matt Groening loved Harvard alumni in his writers’ room, by the time he started working on Futurama in 1999, he went out and got a half-century’s worth of Harvard education to help him come up with such cerebral jokes as “I.C. Weiner.”
It’s no secret that Groening’s sci-fi comedy series is a crowd pleaser among academically-minded animation fans. Futurama is famously laden with in-jokes that only those viewers who are at least slightly interested in science and mathematics can properly appreciate, and, in one particularly proof-heavy 2010 episode, “The Prisoners of Benda,” Futurama writer and PhD mathematician Ken Keeler penned and proved “Keeler’s Theorem” to solve the body-swap problem posed by the Globetrotter-heavy plot.

Futurama returned once more to our screens last year with a fourth outing on Hulu. The long-running animated series about the hijinks of intergalactic delivery crew Planet Express has seen its share of cancellations and comebacks over the years. Originally debuting on Fox in the late 90s to early 2000s, it lived on through movies and a Comedy Central run before that finale was called into question as well.
Now under the banner of Hulu, fans were eager to see what more adventures the creative minds behind Matt Groening and David X. Cohen could conjure up utilizing their blend of sci-fi fantasy and subversive humor. Those who know me will know that Futurama is one of my favorite television shows of all time. The charming characters, clever twists on sci-fi tropes, and razor sharp wit have made the series into one of the most celebrated animated shows ever, rightfully so in my opinion; and its endless rewatchability has made it frequent comfort viewing for me personally. And when Hulu revived the series (for the third time!) last year, I was blown away.
While some episodes were better than others and I don’t think it’s possible for Futurama to ever fully reach the heights of its original Fox run because very few things can, Season 11 was still exciting, creative, and extremely funny; and felt like a return to form after the solid but inconsistent Comedy Central run that preceded it. So naturally, I was excited to see where the revival would go next.

The galactic explorers of the Star Trek franchise have a lot to worry about, from failing weapon shields to unfriendly alien races to the possibility of going on an away mission and getting stranded in a hostile environment. One thing they don’t need to worry about is money: By the time we meet the characters of the original ‘60s TV series, visitors from the planet Vulcan have shared replicator technology with the people of Earth, such that Starfleet exists in the post-scarcity era. To call Star Trek’s vision of the world socialist might be too simplistic, but aspects of its setting align with early 20th century revolutionaries’ futurist theories.
By contrast, Futurama’s vision of the 31st century could never be mistaken for utopian: New New York has suicide booths on every corner; mutants are forced to live in the sewer; and while robots have taken on some...

It feels like yesterday, but back in 2020, the Star Trek franchise launched its first animated comedy with Lower Decks. The brainchild of Rick and Morty writer Mike McMahan, Lower Decks follows the misadventures of a Starfleet crew not cool enough to boldly go on Enterprise-level voyages. For five seasons of warm-hearted sci-fi comedy, Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome have led the series as the voices of stickler Brad Boimler and rule-breaker Beckett Mariner, respectively. In 2023, they even played their animated characters in a live-action crossover episode of Strange New Worlds.
Now, with the Lower Decks journey ending with season five, we caught up with these outer space besties to get a sense of how this quirky Star Trek will end and what’s next.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

In the "Futurama" episode "Time Keeps on Slippin'", the Professor (Billy West) tasks Leela (Katey Sagal), Bender (John Dimaggio), and Fry (Billy West) to fly into a distant space cloud and retrieve several chronitons — marble-size time particles — and bring them back to Earth for an experiment. The Professor has grown five mutant infants in his lab and needs the chronitons to accelerate their growth and turn them into adults within a matter of seconds. The Professor's mutants are meant to serve as the members of a high-octane, superpowered basketball team constructed to take on the Harlem Globetrotters.
When the chronitons were removed from their space cloud, however, it accidentally left a small rip in the space-time continuum. Time began behaving erratically across the universe, skipping forward a few minutes, then a few hours, then a few weeks.
The skips allowed the writers of "Futurama" to squeeze in a few clever gags.

In the "Futurama" episode "Xmas Story", the Planet Express crew take a holiday jaunt to the Catskills for skiing and old-world comedy. The headliner at the Catskills Lodge (no pun intended) is the living, preserved severed head of Conan O'Brien (voiced by himself). In the world of "Futurama," severed heads could be kept alive indefinitely in jars of mysterious, life-giving liquid, allowing 21st-century celebrities to organically appear in the show's 31st-century setting. It's been revealed that animating Conan's massive noggin proved technically difficult.
Conan's severed head attempts a few jokes, but he is heckled by Bender (John Dimaggio) the alcoholic robot. Conan attempts to silence Bender by claiming to have a soul, a fact that doesn't impress the robot. When Conan also points out that he has freckles, Bender is reduced to tears, knowing he, as a machine, will never have freckles of his own.
O'Brien was no mere "get" for "Futurama,...

In the "Futurama" episode "Time Keeps on Slippin'", Earth is unexpectedly visited by the Harlem Globetrotters. In the 31st century, the Harlem Globetrotters have evolved into an alien species unto themselves and travel the heavens challenging neighboring worlds to antic-fueled basketball matches. This is when they're not back in their laboratories unlocking the secrets of ultra-advanced physics, chemistry, and theoretical math; the Harlem Globetrotters homeworld boasts the smartest scientists in the galaxy.
The Globetrotters have now arrived on Earth to challenge its denizens to a basketball tournament. In a clever subversion of screenwriting tropes, the Globetrotters announce that there is absolutely nothing at stake in this match, and that Earth will only suffer mild humiliation if they lose. Regardless, Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) becomes infected with pride and immediately grows a batch of creepy infant basketball player mutants in his lab. Then, using specially salvaged time particles -- called chronitons...
