With its deep roots in blues and rock, it's no wonder that cover songs are as essential a part of heavy metal music as they are. Many garage bands got their start rocking out with their own versions of classic metal albums and developing their own sound from there. After all, not every band has the ambition to retell J.R.R. Tolkein's mythology in a single metal album.
Nowadays, metal bands cover not just the classics, but also songs from all sorts of other genres, often to either epic or comedic effect. Some of these covers might flop, but some of them — like these — are so infused by the power and joy of metal that they transcend their original genres.
Honorable Mention: Alestorm - "You Are A Pirate" (Originally By The Cast Of LazyTown)
Scottish pirate-metal scallywags Alestorm have been shredding sail on Napalm Records for over fifteen years.

“The Lord of the Rings” is the most successful film series in the history of the Academy Awards, winning 17 Oscars including two Best Picture awards out of 30 total nominations.
Both “The Fellowship of the Ring” and “The Return of the King” won Best Picture while Peter Jackson won Best Director for the latter movie, which holds the joint record for most Oscar wins of all time with 11 victories (the same number as “Ben-Hur” and “Titanic”). However, the lauded trilogy only received one acting citation — that was for Ian McKellen for Best Supporting Actor for “The Fellowship of the Ring.”
But while the Oscars didn’t nominate nearly enough actors in this trilogy (shout out to Andy Serkis), “The Lord of the Rings” cast is full of incredible actors who have received multiple awards nominations for other projects. Considering it is Emmys season, we’re going to focus on Emmys.

The Guinness World Records once listed the BBC’s Doctor Who as the “most successful Science Fiction television series in the world,” and, in November 2023, the show turned an impressive 60 years old. Doctor Who originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and was relaunched in 2005.
Despite its grand age, it’s not demonstrating any signs of slowing down.
Former showrunner Russell T Davies (fresh from his success with It’s A Sin) returns to the franchise following last year’s Christmas specials with fan-favorites David Tennant and Catherine Tate. With the 14th season — which, for the first time ever, will premiere simultaneously worldwide thanks to Disney+ (on Friday at 7 p.m.) — Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education and Barbie) officially becomes the newest incarnation of the errant Time Lord.
But, what about those who have already played the role of The Doctor (a.k.a. Doctor Who) over the past seven decades? Below is your 101 to all of the lead actors.

Anna is a thrilling and complex story of a government agent turned assassin, joining the ranks of other great spy movies like The Bourne Identity. Luc Besson's Anna presents a unique view of the assassin world, combining double-crosses and Russian espionage for an exciting action-packed experience. Films like Salt, The Killer, and John Wick show strong portrayals of skilled assassins, blending intense action with emotional depth and thrilling plots.
From John Wick to Atomic Blonde to The Bourne Identity, there are plenty of great action thrillers like Anna that explore the gruesome life of an assassin. Although it was released five years ago, Anna has found a whole new fan base since climbing the streaming charts on Netflix. The X-Men have some mutants who are too powerful for movies but perfect for long-form storytelling in comics. Rasputin IV has the powers of 5 different iconic X-Men, while Isca the Unbeaten can literally never lose. There are too many reality-warping mutants to count, including Magician, Matthew Malloy and Cyclops' forgotten son.

Frank Farian, the mastermind producer responsible for the groups Milli Vanilli, Boney M., La Bouche, and more, has died. He was 82 years old.
Over the course of his six-decade career, Farian saw considerable success as a songwriter and producer, but his time as the mastermind behind Milli Vanilli — and their infamous lip-syncing controversy — is likely what most remember him for. Farian first met the group’s frontmen, Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, in Frankfurt, and signed a contract with them in January 1988, locking them into a deal.
Then, dissatisfied with the quality of the group’s vocal performances, Farian employed session vocalists — including Charles Shaw, John Davis, Brad Howell, and others — to provide the lead vocal parts for the duo’s recordings, leading to an arrangement where Pilatus and Morvan, against their desires, lip-synced the parts that they claimed to be singing themselves.

Frank Farian — the founder of groups Boney M. and Milli Vanilli — has died at the age of 82. The German producer’s agency released a statement Tuesday confirming that Farian had died peacefully at his home in Miami.
Although his cause of death was not immediately revealed, Farian said that he had gone through heart valve replacement surgery in 2022. He told the magazine Bild at the time that the surgery saved his life.

German record producer and singer/songwriter Frank Farian, who founded Milli Vanilli and the disco-pop group Boney M., has died. He was 82.
His family released a statement confirming he died “peacefully” at his home in Miami, Florida.
Farian was the brains behind the pop duo Milli Vanilli, who was best known for their songs “Blame It On The Rain” and “Girl You Know It’s True.” He later admitted to the lip-syncing scandal that led to the revocation of the duo’s 1990 Grammy for Best New Artist. It also led to multiple lawsuits in the U.S.
The Germany-born producer started his career off as a singer by forming a band called Frankie Boys Schatten. He then branched out as a solo artist before joining vocalists Liz Mitchell, Marcia Barrett, front man Bobby Farrell and dancer Maizie Williams in 1976 to create Boney M. Sacha Dhawan misread the script for Doctor Who and mistakenly believed that his character, The Master, was supposed to dance to Boney M's "Rasputin." Despite the misunderstanding, the production team allowed Dhawan to dance for about five minutes during filming and included some of the footage in the final cut. Dhawan had been listening to the song constantly and was excited about the idea of Rasputin dancing, so he improvised his moves on the spot and was glad that it made the episode.
Jodie Whittaker's Master actor Sacha Dhawan shares shocking details about Doctor Who's Rasputin dance. Dhawan debuted as the villain's latest regeneration in season 12's premiere story, "Spyfall," where he assisted a tech billionaire in subjugating the Earth. The actor later starred as the main villain of Whittaker's final adventure, "The Power of The Doctor," where he aligned himself with Daleks and Cybermen to destroy the Doctor's entire legacy.

Upon its August 2023 premiere, the Amazon Prime Video original film “Red, White & Royal Blue” quickly gained a massive audience, a large portion of which reportedly created new subscriptions just so they could view it. Now, the two-hour adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 novel of the same name is set to embark on a 2024 TV awards run that, of course, won’t include the delayed 75th Emmys but could more than reasonably begin with the 81st Golden Globes. If it does make its way into the upcoming Best Limited Series/TV Movie lineup, it will be the first one-off film in seven years to earn Golden Globes recognition as a general program.
Directed and co-written by Tony winner Matthew López (“The Inheritance”), “Red, White & Royal Blue” stars Taylor Zakhar Perez (“The Kissing Booth” franchise) and Nicholas Galitzine (2021’s “Cinderella”) as two fictional world leaders’ offspring whose bitter rivalry unexpectedly evolves into a romance.

Evan Peters and his “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” co-star Niecy Nash-Betts are currently the odds-on favorites to take home the Emmys for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress, respectively. If both prevail in January, “Dahmer” will join a very small group of programs that have bagged both prizes.
Since the limited series/TV movie supporting acting categories were created in 1975, only four programs have won both awards. The first to do it was the telefilm “The Promise” (1986), which racked up victories for James Woods in lead and Piper Laurie in supporting. There has been a noticeable tonal shift in Black Mirror ever since it moved to Netflix from Channel Four prior to the third season. The utterly bleak, morbidly wicked British Black Mirror went through an American makeover and became a rather subtle, darkly comic show with a dash of optimism. It was still fascinating and very watchable. But obviously, a lot of people who fell in love with the show because of its pitch-black, hopeless first two seasons (and the terrifying Christmas special episode) got miffed by its newness. I personally didn’t have an issue, as I have always seen change as a sign of growth. But I could always see the logic behind the “Black Mirror is not the same anymore” argument. Especially with the last season delivering arguably the weakest batch of Black Mirror episodes, there was even a proper justification behind the argument.

Cinematographer Elemér Ragályi, one of the greatest talents of modern Hungarian cinema, died last Thursday.
Ragályi was born in 1939 in Hungary, where he graduated at the Academy of Theater and Film with a degree in cinematography.
As a cinematographer, he worked with directors such as István Gaál, István Szabó Gyula Gazdag, Judit Elek, Pál Sándor and Ferenc András, innovating in order to give a distinctive look to iconic films.
In 1970, Gaál’s “The Falcons” won the Jury Prize of the Cannes Film Festival, in large part thanks to the camerawork of Ragályi.

In 1990, he received the television prize, the CableACE Award, of the American Society of Cinematographers for the HBO production “The Josephine Baker Story,” starring Lynn Whitfield. He was also nominated for Ace awards for his work on “Max and Helen” and “Red King, White King,” starring Tom Skerritt and Helen Mirren.

It took 42 years, but Mel Brooks is finally making good on a parody of a promise he never seemed likely to keep: Bringing “History of the World, Part II” to audiences far and wide. The filmmaker addresses that elephant in the room within the opening minutes of the new, eight-part Hulu series, admitting that he agreed to the project under two conditions — that there could be no repeat gags, and that he be made to look exactly like he did in the 1981 original film.
The show winks at both of those conditions by the end of the first episode, setting the tone for any unaware viewers that were expecting historical insight or veracity on world events.
In “Part II,” a now 96-year-old Brooks returns as writer and producer, but aside from the aforementioned intro, he doesn’t appear onscreen. Instead, he picks up narration duties from Orson Welles, a gig...

Since her work on “The Dropout” has already brought her an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Critics Choice Award, Amanda Seyfried only needs a Screen Actors Guild Award in order to complete her major industry TV prize sweep. Based on the fact that no woman who has been nominated for all four awards and won the Emmy first has failed to win the other three, her path to victory is arguably clearer than that of any other 2023 SAG Award contender. If she is successful on this final bid, she will be the 12th woman to win both a lead Emmy and a SAG Award for the same TV movie or miniseries performance.

Months after achieving what was widely considered an easy Primetime Emmy win for Hulu’s “The Dropout,” Amanda Seyfried is now poised to sail through the rest of this awards season as the recipient of every major Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress prize. By the end of February, she can pick up Golden Globe, Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild trophies for her portrayal of biotech fraudster Elizabeth Holmes and thus emulate five other women who have each collected all four pieces of hardware for a single non-continuing program performance.
The very first Critics Choice Award for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress was bestowed upon Julianne Moore in 2012 for her work as Sarah Palin in “Game Change.” She then similarly triumphed at the Emmys, Golden Globes and SAG Awards over the next seven months. She remains the only woman to receive all four of these awards for a...

Britney Spears has just released her first new music in six years. Now that’s an occasion to celebrate. A moment that pop fans have spent years waiting for. “Hold Me Closer” is her collaboration with Elton John, tripping through a few of his classic hits with a disco throb. If you’re a longtime Britney fan, it’s a massive emotional experience to hear her sing again. To hear her step into a studio and unleash her growl. To hear her dust off that “baby.” A joyful day for...

Sorry, Darren Criss, but your reign as the youngest Screen Actors Guild Award winner for limited series/TV movie actor looks to be short-lived. “When They See Us” star and Emmy champ Jharrel Jerome is the frontrunner to take the prize in January, and like Criss just did, he’d destroy the record.
Criss was nine days shy of his 32nd birthday when he prevailed on Jan. 27 for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” becoming the first person in his 30s to win the award and shaving nine years off of the previous record held by Gary Sinise, who was 40 when he won for “Truman” in 1996. Sinise took home a second statuette two years later, for “George Wallace,” and currently occupies two spots in the top five youngest winners.
At 22, Jerome would, obviously, be the first twentysomething to win — just like he was at the Emmys — and knock off another nine years.

Having won the Golden Bear of the 64th Berlinale with “Black Coal, Thin Ice” in 2014, Chinese film has gained the attention of an international audience once more. “The Wild Goose Lake” continues the social realism that Diao Yinan laid out in his big festival hit. His first features “Uniform” (2003) and “Night Train” (2007) already showed the daily life of China’s citizens, focusing on relevant topics of power and identity in the context of the working class. “Black Coal, Thin Ice” dealt with the conflict between communism and capitalism. A symbolic crime story that touches the conflict between China’s past and present. “The Wild Goose Lake” can be seen clearly in the tradition of its predecessors, as Diao picks up all of the previous topics, but also brings his noted visual presentation to perfection.

The Chinese film industry may not yet have emerged from a “cold winter” production freeze, nor its box office kept pace with 2018. But but those inclement elements did not put a chill on the pageantry at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
The opening ceremony for the festival’s 22nd edition went ahead Saturday with the usual red carpet parade, and with the habitual speeches and formalities. But it did so without the scheduled world premiere screening of Guan Hu’s “The Eight Hundred.”
News that the historical war film had been cancelled “for technical reasons” was abruptly circulated just 24 hours earlier — too late for the festival to arrange another new film to take its place. The screening of the second opening film, Chinese drama “Beautiful Voyage,” went forward as planned.

Ian McKellen celebrates his 80th birthday on May 25, 2019. The Oscar-nominated thespian has excelled at everything from Shakespeare to sci-fi on both the stage and screen. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1939 in Lancashire, England, UK, McKellen first came to prominence on the stage, appearing in a number of classic plays from the likes of Anton Chekhov and William Shakespeare (including an acclaimed production of “Richard III” that he brought to the screen in 1995). His performance as Salieri in the 1981 production of “Amadeus” brought him a Tony award as Best Actor in a Play.

In any film noir, there is The Moment It All Goes Wrong. But it is unlikely you will soon see that moment, or any of the genre’s other staple plot points, staged and executed with quite the slick, dark dazzle of Diao Yinan’s “The Wild Goose Lake.” At an underworld gathering, held in the dingy amphitheater of a hotel basement, a few dozen grimy gangsters are learning the latest techniques in motorcycle theft. Then comes the parceling out of territories in the unnamed nearby city, and a squabble erupts over a lucrative zone. A shot rings out, a brawl ensues, lit by one swinging light bulb and imagined in a serious of punchy closeups: a grimacing face in a half-nelson; a bloodied, tattooed knuckle; a prosthetic being ripped from its limb. It’s a scene we’ve watched a hundred times before, but here it feels electrifyingly new.

Darren Criss not only completed his awards sweep at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” but he’s now the youngest winner ever in the limited series/TV movie actor category.
Criss, who turns 32 on Feb. 5, is the first person to win the award in his 30s and is nine years younger than the former record holder, Gary Sinise, who was 40 at the time of his victory for “Truman” in 1996. Darren Criss became the second youngest person to win the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor Emmy for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” in September. He could be the third youngest to win the Golden Globe equivalent next month. And if he wins the corresponding Screen Actors Guild Award, he’d set a new benchmark as the category’s youngest winner ever.
Criss, who will be nine days shy of his 32nd birthday at the Jan. 27 ceremony, wouldn’t just break the record; he’d smash it. No one has won that category while in their 30s. The Creative Death sub-sub-genre took flight in the ‘70s with The Omen (1976), as that little imp Damien (and his dad) dispatched the cast in different macabre and entertaining ways. (Variety is the spice, and all that.) The ’78 sequel continued the burgeoning tradition, leading us up to The Legacy (1978) - a film that takes its own stab at variety by marrying The Old Dark House to The Dark Underlord and delivering a fun, wicked (albeit goofy) little offspring.
Released in September in the U.K. (and the following September stateside) by Columbia-emi-Warner (and Universal in the U.S.), The Legacy brought in $11 million against its $2.5 million budget, making it a commercial if not critical success. That this British/American co-production manages to combine their unique aesthetics into something coherent is and of itself some kind of horror miracle.

Robert Eggers, the filmmaker behind this weekend's acclaimed horror smash "The Witch," has been set to pen and direct a 6-8 episode event series based on the life of Grigori Rasputin.
Media Rights Capital and Parts and Labor are producing the project which will explore the mad monk's rise to power as both advisor to the Russian Imperial family and personal physician to Tsar Nicholas II's young son along with his bloody death in St. Petersburg in 1916.
The project is separate from the film take in the works with Jason Hall ("American Sniper") penning and Leonardo DiCaprio attached to potentially play him. Eggers is also working on a visceral adaptation of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent vampire classic "Nosferatu".
Various acclaimed actors like Christopher Lee, Gerard Depardieu, Tom Baker, and most famously Alan Rickman have portrayed Rasputin over the years - Rickman scoring an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a SAG award for his performance.

The world has lost British great, Alan Rickman. The actor sadly died at the age of 69.
From the AP:
Rickman’s family said Thursday that the actor had died after a battle with cancer.
Born to a working-class London family in 1946 and trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Rickman was often cast as the bad guy; with his rich, languid voice he could invest evil with wicked, irresistible relish.
His breakout role was as scheming French aristocrat the Vicomte de Valmont in an acclaimed 1985 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Christopher Hampton’s “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.”
Film roles included the psychopathic villain Hans Gruber who tormented Bruce Willis in “Die Hard” in 1988; a deceased lover who consoles his bereaved partner in 1990’s “Truly Madly Deeply”; the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” in 1991; and a wayward husband in 2003 romantic comedy “Love Actually.

While the movie world celebrated the finest in the year's achievements with the Oscar nominations unveiled this morning, underpinning it all was a sense of sadness as acclaimed and beloved British actor Alan Rickman has passed away at the age of 69. The actor first earned attention for his work on the stage, breaking out with this Tony-nominated turn as Valmont in "Les Liaisons Dangereuses." Hollywood followed, and two years later, Rickman took the role of a lifetime as Hans Gruber in "Die Hard," crafting one of the big screen's all time best villains. Roles in "Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves" and "Rasputin" also brought him attention, but Rickman reached a new generation of fans thanks to his performance as Professor Snape in the "Harry Potter" franchise. But it's really the range of his roles that truly made Rickman stand out. His performances in "Michael Collins," "Truly Madly Deeply," "Love Actually,...

How? Why? What did we do wrong to lose David Bowie and Alan Rickman (not to mention the Powerball, which seems really insignificant now) back-to-back?
Alan Rickman is dead. He died January 14 in London, surrounded by family and friends. Hans Gruber, Severus Snape, the Sheriff of Nottingham, Rasputin, Valmont. Gone. Like Bowie, Rickman was 69. Still like Bowie, he was (secretly, to many of us) battling cancer.
Alan Rickman, one of the greatest actors of all time, started as a theater thespian and was nominated for Tony Awards, but he was never afraid to mix with the popular crowd, too, starring in "Die Hard," the "Harry Potter" films, "Love Actually," "Robin Hood," "Galaxy Quest," "Sense and Sensibility," and literally dozens of other films. We'll get to hear his iconic voice again in "Alice Through the Looking Glass," as he was the voice of Absolem the Caterpillar, but then ... silence.
Somehow, Rickman never won an Oscar.

2016 has gotten off to a brutal start for great British entertainers. As the world gets over the death of David Bowie a few days ago, it has been set in shock again as acting legend Alan Rickman has died in London.
Rickman had been suffering from cancer and his death was confirmed on Thursday by his family. It's the worst kind of coincidence - Bowie and Rickman were 69 years old and passed after battling cancer, and a week before that British musician Lemmy also passed away from cancer just days after turning 70.
Rickman's distinct features and immediately identifiable diction were admired by generations of actors and made him synonymous with playing antagonists - something he famously wasn't a fan of as he preferred to play the dashing leading man role which he did manage to do in some of his work.
Coming to fame with a key role in The BBC's mini-series "The Barchester Chronicles,...

The History Channel has released a full trailer for their new four-hour Houdini miniseries. The show will follow the life of the legendary magician from his beginnings in desperate poverty to the worldwide fame that he gained. The series stars Adrien Brody, and it looks like it's going to be pretty damn good.
Before David Blaine and David Copperfield, there was one man whose name was synonymous with being the master of illusion and escape - Harry Houdini. Houdini follows the man behind the magic as he finds fame, engages in espionage, battles spiritualists and encounters the greatest names of the era, from U.S. presidents to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Grigori Rasputin. The drama will chronicle the life of a man who can defy death through his stunts, his visions and his mastery of illusion.
