Like the character she played, Liesel Matthews (Sara) came from a wealthy background. Matthews (whose actual name was Liesel Pritzker) is a grandchild of wealthy industrialist A. N. Pritzker and a niece of Jay Pritzker, who founded the Hyatt Hotel chain. After a family dispute and lawsuit in her early twenties, Liesel received about $500 million of her family's fortune. She subsequently became a philanthropist in, among other places, India (a country that her character Sara loved as well) and created several educational and development charities.
In the ongoing fairy tale, Sara tells throughout the film, the protagonists are played by her parents - the prince is played by her father (Liam Cunningham), and the princess by her late mother (Alison Moir).
The stores on the film's main street are named after various crew members.
The name Sara / Sarah means "Noble lady, Precious, Pure, Excellent, Wealth, Princess' in Urdu, one of the major languages in India.
The name of Ram Dass' monkey is Hanuman, which is the name of the monkey god who helped Prince Rama rescue Sita from Ravana in "The Ramayana."
