In previous articles, we have taken a look at stars of the past we would like to see make a comeback – and there are a lot of them! It was too hard to narrow it down to just a few, so now we’ve put together another list of 80s stars we want back, including a couple of Freddy victims, some 1980s beauties we miss, and a lady we’ve only seen twice on our screens.

As part of my post duty orders here at We Are Movie Geeks it is my privilege to shine a light on movies that never quite found an audience, that may have slipped through the cracks. Movies that got very little or n o theatrical release, not much publicity or went straight to video (very common these days.) Such a movie is Jack The Bear . I can recall being vaguely aware of the movie when it was released in 1993, it did play in theaters but I don’t recall much advertising devoted to it. In that time frame I either was too busy or too broke to take in a movie, usually both.

What a year 1993 was. It saw the release of Star Fox on the Super Nintendo. Bill Clinton became president. Season three of Deep Space Nine premiered on Us television. UK politician Douglas Hurd visited Argentina. Cyndi Lauper released her album Hat Full Of Stars.

Aside from those earth shattering events, we'll probably remember 1993, in cinema terms, as the year Jurassic Park dominated the box office like an angry Tyrannosaurus. A true phenomenon, its profits doubled those of the second most watched film in 1993 cinemas, Mrs Doubtfire, and almost three times as much as the movie below that - the Harrison Ford thriller, The Fugitive.

But as ever, there was so much more to the 1993 movie landscape than dinosaurs and Robin Williams dressed as an old woman.

From Anchor Bay Entertainment, comes a new re-issue of director Marshall Herskovitz' 1993 drama "Jack The Bear", written by Steven Zaillian based on the novel by author Dan McCall, starring Danny DeVito and Gary Sinise, with a very young Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Reese Witherspoon.

"...in 1972, 'Jack Leary' (Robert J. Steinmiller Jr.), his younger brother 'Dylan' (Miko Hughes) and father 'John' (DeVito) start over in Oakland, California, following the death of the boys' mother.

"John, who hosted a children's program back in Syracuse, now hosts the local late-night show 'Midnight Shriek', entertaining the audience during horror films as 'Al Gory'.

"One of the Learys' neighbors, 'Norman Strick' (Sinise) shows up at their home on Halloween, seeking donations for a racially-prejudiced candidate. John refuses, and shuts the door in Norman's face.

"Disturbed that Norman lives across the street, John gets drunk and his performance on his TV show mimics the racially-charged beliefs of his neighbor.

Academy Award-winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian will receive the Writers Guild of America, West’s 2011 Laurel Award for Screen, honoring lifetime achievement in outstanding writing for motion pictures.

The award will be presented at the 2011 Writers Guild Awards West Coast ceremony on Saturday, Feb. 5, in Hollywood.

“Steven Zaillian’s best scripts not only function as intelligent, thought-provoking works that uplift and inspire audiences, but often, as in the case of his screenplays such as ‘Schindler’s List,’ they act as witness to crucial chapters in our collective history. His impressive body of work provides a benchmark that all screenwriters aspire to,” said Wgaw president John Wells in a statement.

The four-time WGA Award nominee is perhaps best known for his screenplay “Schindler’s List,” based on the novel by Thomas Keneally. In 1994, Zaillian received an Academy Award for his screen adaptation of the film, which went on to garner multiple awards that year.

Marshall Herskovitz will receive the 2006 Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal as part of the AFI Life Achievement Award Tribute to Sean Connery on Thursday at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland. Herskovitz, who graduated in 1975 from the AFI Conservatory, where he met his longtime professional partner Edward Zwick, with whom he founded The Bedford Falls Co. Together, they created such TV series as Thirtysomething and My So-Called Life. They have produced such films as Legends of the Fall and The Last Samurai, and Herskovitz has directed the features Jack the Bear and Dangerous Beauty. He also serves as an AFI trustee and president of the Producers Guild of America.
