Terry O'Quinn turned down the chance to reprise the role of Jerry Blake, resulting in the storyline being changed so that the character got plastic surgery to alter his appearance.
In this movie, Keith Grant (Robert Wightman) becomes a gardener at a plant nursery. John List, who The Stepfather was based on, took up gardening as a hobby while he was on the lam for eighteen years. He particularly did this after marrying his second wife and moving to Virginia. Also, like John List, in this movie, Keith Grant attends church, where he meets Christine (Priscilla Barnes) and Andy (David Tom). Throughout his life, List was a devout Lutheran, and taught Sunday school at every church he attended in his lifetime.
Shot in twenty-five days.
Season Hubley (Jennifer) had originally been considered for the role of Carol Grayland in Stepfather II (1989).
In this film, David Tom plays the son of "Three's Company" star Priscilla Barnes. He later played the son of "Three's Company" star John Ritter in the films "Stay Tuned" and "Holy Joe".
