'Freakier Friday' has almost finished filming. The sequel to Disney's 2003 body swap comedy starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as a mother-and-daughter duo who have to learn to live in each other's shoes is set for release next year but Jamie Lee took to Instagram before the weekend to reveal that it is almost a wrap. She wrote on Instagram: "The last Friday of this Freakiest Friday or shall I call it Cryday. We still have a couple days left next week, but it's winding down and this morning as I arrived at work and looked at the hundreds of people gathering together to make it for the fans, shooting the movie in California, I'm feeling especially grateful to my Ultimate movie daughter, @lindsaylohan without whom we could not have made this movie. Ever. She gifted me a @suziekondi shirt after I complimented her on hers and...

This feature was published in Issue 5 of Notebook magazine as part of a broader exploration of the instructional form. The magazine is available via direct subscription or in select stores around the world.Lupino Lane’s acrobatic slapstick, saucer-eyed charm and comic timing made him a sensation in the music halls of his native London and on cinema screens around the world. He guaranteed his place in pop culture posterity when he first presented the sharp-elbowed strolling dance, “The Lambeth Walk,” in the 1937 hit West End musical Me and My Girl. Lane also starred in Albert de Courville’s film adaptation The Lambeth Walk in 1939, which transformed the cockney jig into a global craze. Lane was born in 1892 into the Lupino theatrical dynasty, which traced its on-stage activities back to the seventeenth century and would soon swell to include his young cousin Ida Lupino, who followed him to Hollywood. Under the moniker “Little Nipper,...

In 1977, Dolly Parton released a new album that featured two songs she did not write. Parton has always prided herself on her abilities as a writer, but she felt both songs, which she had loved as a teenager, were good additions to the album. Here’s how people reacted when she told them she would be covering these songs.
Dolly Parton covered 2 of her favorite songs on the album ‘New Harvest … First Gathering’
In 1977, Parton released the album New Harvest … First Gathering. Though it was not her first solo album, it was the first album she’d ever self-produced and she hoped it would bring her crossover success. She had long been a success in Nashville, but she wanted broader recognition.
Parton wrote eight of the album’s ten songs, but she included two covers that listeners would likely recognize. These were The Temptations’ “My Girl” and Jackie Wilson’s...

Joe Alwyn and Taylor Swift‘s six-year relationship, which began in 2016, was marked by privacy and mutual support. During their relationship, Swift wrote several songs about Alwyn, including “Gorgeous,” “Lover,” and tracks from her Folklore and Evermore albums, where he co-wrote under the pseudonym William Bowery. Their breakup in early 2023 surprised fans, as they had maintained a low-profile romance.

The exact reasons remain private, but sources suggest the split was amicable, driven by differences in their lifestyles and careers. Their breakup coincided with Swift’s Eras Tour, which she continued with strength and professionalism. The tour saw her performing emotionally charged songs that fans speculate were influenced by their relationship and subsequent split.

The three major record labels Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group have filed lawsuits against AI start-up companies Suno and Udio alleging copyright infringement.
Brought forth by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the lawsuits claim Suno and Udio used the labels’ recordings to train their AI models without permission “at an almost unimaginable scale.”
Both Suno and Udio allow users to create original songs based on text prompts, generating a combination of lyrics, vocals, and instrumentals. Notably, the latter was used to create the viral hit “Bbl Drizzy.”
The lawsuits note that songs generated by Suno and Udio sound just like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” The Beach Boys’ “I Get Around,” Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” The Temptations’ “My Girl,” and Green Day’s “American Idiot,” among others. Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson’s voices were also cited as examples of copyright infringement.

The complexity of Hiatus Kaiyote’s blue-eyed soul, which boasts layers of instrumentation and sonic details, only partially masks their rudimentary chord progressions and repetitive song structures. And despite the tonal and sensory aims of the band’s music—they’re clearly going for a kind of rapturous delirium—their lyrics are often silly and too earnest by half. All of this is more apparent than ever on the Australian quartet’s Love Heart Cheat Code.
For one, the arresting polyrhythms of “Telescope,” led by Perrin Moss’s spry drums and Paul Bender’s loping bass, are undermined by the decision to interpolate the Temptations’s iconic “My Girl,” as singer Nai Palm almost laughably wonders, “What can make me feel this way?/Is it kush? Or outer space?/And space is the place.” The song never gets past the vaguest intimations of the cosmic and the broadest of references to altered perception.

Macaulay Culkin, the actor who reached extraordinary heights of fame and success with his tremendous portrayal of the genius Kevin McCallister in his version of the Home Alone saga, actually shared a rather peculiar relationship with Michael Jackson in the eyes of the public. That being said, most fans may not know that this friendship actually started with a phone call.

As Culkin himself admitted it, the pair probably wouldn’t have shared the kind of close relationship they did had it not been for one “weird, random” call that the child actor received from the now-deceased King of Pop. And, although this may sound similar to the rumors surrounding Jackson’s alleged abuse of youngsters, that’s hardly the case, and Culkin stands as a witness to this claim.

Orphan was released by Scream Factory on April 14th, 2024.
Murderous children is one of my favorite sub-genres of horror. Some are good, most are bad and a select few — including Orphan from 2009 — are truly great. Starting all the way back in 1956 with The Bad Seed, audiences have been captivated by the concept of children committing heinous acts of violence. Now, thanks to Scream Factory, we have one of the most shocking entries in the genre available on blu-ray with a brand-new, limited-edition slipcover.

Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther in The Orphan
Much like The Sixth Sense — and even Sleepaway Camp — Orphan is a horror film that’s primarily remembered for the twisted revelation at its conclusion; however, a movie has to be more than just its ending. Even knowing how the film ends, the rewatch-ability of Jaume Collet-Serra’s twisted tale is undeniable. The kill count is relatively low for this style of horror,...

As Hollywood consistently churns out box office hits, it’s common for successful films to spawn franchises in pursuit of continued success through sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and many other ways. Howard Stern has been one of the most controversial – and revered – figures in the history of modern media. With a passion for the field as a child, Stern’s climb to the top of the radio world truly began in the ‘80s. And he did it off of his unique, button-pressing, FCC-clashing brand and humor: the boobs, the prank calls, the Wack Pack, all of it all made Howard Stern one of the most recognizable figures in all of media. And so as his markets grew and his written word topped the charts – but long before his first $500 million contract with Sirius – it was time for Stern to enter the movie business…with something a little more commercially viable than Butt Bongo Fiesta.

Takumi Matsumoto is an actor and up-and-coming artist. Growing up, he loved musicals like “Peter Pan” and began acting at three. The early days of his career included commercials and eventually J-Dramas like “My Girl.” As he got older, his motivation grew, and he landed a supporting part in Takashi Murakami's “Jellyfish Eyes” and the role of John in the Japanese Broadway production of “Peter Pan.” Since then, Matsumoto has continued to work in theater, film, and television. Recently, he starred alongside Myuri in Yoko Higuchi's sci-fi drama short film “Synthetic Love.”
Recently, we spoke with Matsumoto about acting, the filming process in Japan, filmmaking relationships, and other topics.
What motivated you to pursue an acting career?
When I was three years old, I started acting. One of the reasons I studied acting was because when I watched the musical “Peter Pan,” I wanted to fly through the sky.

Get in, loser. We’re riding with Rachel McAdams because she’s still Queen Bee.
Since she’s become a mother, life has changed. During the filming of Lionsgate’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” she had her five-month-old daughter and two-year-old son on set. Even her younger sister and make-up artist Kayleen had her two children, two and three months, by her side. “We had a really amazing mom-positive set,” she tells Variety. “Everyone understood me having to send breast milk down the road in a van all day long.”
But McAdams is susceptible to the looming sense of “mom guilt” that plagues many working parents, despite being “very lucky” to have lots of time with her kids. She found that connection and applied it to portray her role as Barbara Simon, the mother of the titular character Margaret (played by Abby Ryder Fortson) in Kelly Fremon Craig...

There are “child stars,” and then there are performers that start working during childhood only to become bona fide, beloved screen icons, enjoying long, varied careers throughout their lives. Following in the footsteps of Shirley Temple, Natalie Wood and Mickey Rooney, Macaulay Culkin has — for three decades and counting — been a contemporary standard bearer for that personal and professional journey.
Culkin became a full-fledged cultural phenomenon after the explosive commercial success of his fifth film, 1990’s “Home Alone,” which he made when he was just 10 years old. The film grossed $476 million worldwide, due in direct part to his mischievous-yet-vulnerable performance as Kevin McAllister. But beginning in his teenage years, Culkin began seeking projects that piqued his artistic interests rather than sustaining his immediate and colossal celebrity. The film grossed $476 million worldwide, due in direct part to his mischievous-yet-vulnerable performance as Kevin McAllister. But beginning in his teenage years, Culkin began seeking projects that piqued his artistic interests rather than sustaining his immediate and colossal celebrity. Even without any expectation for those subsequent efforts to reach the same stratospheric heights as his early breakthrough, Culkin’s star wattage has barely flickered,...

After making it known in September that he’s interested in acquiring ABC from Disney for a price tag of $10 billion, Byron Allen assures Variety he still has his eyes set on ABC and promises he’s ready play ball when Disney is ready to sell.
“I think ABC’s a real possibility. They say they’re not ready,” Allen said at the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery’s Visionary Ball on Wednesday night. “When they’re ready I’m going to chase it down like a lion chases down a gazelle.”
Allen’s original bid was targeted at ABC, eight local TV stations and Disney-owned cable networks FX and National Geographic Channel. But, he’s since considered downsizing the ask.

This article contains spoilers for the Oct. 10 episode of “Dancing With the Stars.”
Singer Jason Mraz who was tied at the top of the leaderboard last week, earned the first “9”s of the season on Tuesday night’s “Dancing With the Stars.” Later in the show, “Vanderpump Rules” star Ariana Madix, who danced in flats due to a possible unrevealed injury, was shocked to also be given two “9”s and two “8” scores.
Mraz and partner Daniella Karagach shook it up for Motown Night with a spirited Jive to “Do You Love Me” by The Contours. Carrie Ann Inaba called it “brilliant,” while Derek Hough raved that Mraz made the dance look “effortless.” Tonioli gushed that it was “like watching a scene from a movie.”
Motown Night saw extra points for everyone as “The $100,000 Pyramid” host Michael Strahan joined as a guest judge.

It’s Motown Night on “Dancing with the Stars” this week and nothing says “Motown” more than… Michael Strahan. The “Good Morning America” co-anchor will guest-judge the remaining 12 couples’ routines to soul hits.
Prepare yourself for a whole lotta foxtrots. Half of the dances are foxtrots and the other six are two quicksteps, one cha-cha, one tango, one rumba and one jive. Jason Mraz and Daniella Karagach have the jive, marking the second consecutive week they are the only couple assigned a particular dance style (last week was rumba). Tptb are really testing out his extra vertebrae, huh?
After sitting out last week due to Covid-19, Artem Chigvintsev is back in the ballroom this week with Charity Lawson.

Macaulay Culkin has been famous since "Home Alone" came out in 1990, when he was just 10 years old. In the years immediately after, he became perhaps the biggest child star on the 1990s, appearing in movies like "My Girl, "The Pagemaster," and "Richie Rich." But by 1995, he had decided to take a break from acting, and he's tried to keep his life pretty private since. That includes his relationship with fellow actor Brenda Song; the pair reportedly got engaged in January 2022, though they never confirmed that news publicly. And back in 2021, he and Song welcomed their first child, Dakota, named after Culkin's sister who died in 2008. Their second child, Carson, followed shortly after, and the pair have strived to keep their kids out of the spotlight, too.
Even before he met Song, Culkin has tended to keep his romances low-key, which is pretty understandable, given his lifelong experiences in the spotlight.

“America’s Got Talent” continued season 18 on July 11 with a two-hour showcase of acts in “Auditions 6.” There are no changes to judges’ dais this summer with executive producer Simon Cowell and long-time judge Howie Mandel taking their place on the ends of the table. Heidi Klum returns as well, as does Sofia Vergara who took a break when “All-Stars” aired earlier this year. Hosting duties are entrusted to the lively Terry Crews once again.
In the audition phase of “AGT,” an act needs at least three of the four judges to give them a “yes” vote to advance to the next round. If two or more judges buzz the act, they are immediately eliminated. Each judge and Crews has one chance to hit the “golden buzzer” and send an act straight through to the live performances.

On the Tuesday, July 11 episode of “America’s Got Talent” Season 18, judges Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara meet the 82nd Airborne Chorus from North Carolina. The singing military group represents the 19,000 individuals who “support and serve the airborne division” of the U.S. Army. When Simon inquires about their big dream, the leader proudly responds, “We are here to win.” Watch the “AGT” sneak peek video above.
“Last week we lost one of our soldiers, Specialist Elijah Crawford, so we are dedicating this performance to him and all of the soldiers that have passed before him,” declares the group’s spokesman, who noticeably holds back tears. The 82nd Airborne Chorus then begins an up-tempo version of “My Girl” by The Temptations that has the audience smiling and clapping along with every note.

Close.Heavy-handed and voyeuristic, Lukas Dhont’s first film, Girl (2018), deserved its share of backlash. Following the travails of a teenage transgender ballet dancer—played by cis-male actor Victor Polster, one of many controversial choices—Girl approaches its heroine with apparent empathy, but ultimately conflates trans identity with relentless physical and psychological carnage. “What could have been a thoughtful exploration of a difficult part of a trans girl’s daily life,” writes Hollywood Reporter critic Oliver Whitney, “instead uses her body as a site of trauma, inviting the audience to react with disgust.” Hyperbolizing the challenges of gender transition, a process that is by definition already dramatic, Girl exposes the dangers of representation from a vantage of ignorance. The film climaxes with a scene of self-castration via scissors—an unlikely act, not to mention a heedlessly cruel one. Five years later, Dhont’s second feature, Close (2022), averts these issues, in...

Teen movies are one of the most beloved genres, from John Hughes' Molly Ringwald trilogy to the quest for virginity loss with the help of a warm, apple pie. But there's another part of adolescence that often gets lost on the big screen — especially for women. There are very few stories about the tween years: an uncomfortable and confusing time when you're unsure if you should still sleep with stuffed animals or start stuffing your bra. It involves the uncertainty of puberty, peer pressure, and oppressive school rules. I have so many memories from this formative time period burned into my brain; like the time a boy said I was gross or how desperately I wanted to look like the silky-haired popular girls.
Because of this gap in tween representation on screen, "girls are expected to go straight from 'Doc McStuffins' to 'Euphoria,'" Rachel Shukert shrewdly observed in Vulture.

The Netflix limited series Inventing Anna follows the intriguing story of Anna Sorokin (aka Anna Delvey), a high-society con artist who successfully scams wealthy New Yorkers out of their fortunes. Emmy award-winning actor Julia Garner, who captured the essence of the fraudulent debutante, was in good company on the set of the successful series.
Six-time Emmy nominee Anna Chlumsky portrayed investigative journalist Vivian Kent, who was responsible for unraveling the scam. While the character was based on a real-life reporter, the My Girl star made the role her own, pulling from her personal experiences when she worked as a journalist.

Despite still being one of the most recognizable child stars of all time, Macaulay Culkin prefers to stay out of the spotlight these days. In a rare interview, Culkin opened up about his childhood acting in hit movies and how stories about him “divorcing” his parents were blown way out of proportion.
Macaulay Culkin became one of the world’s biggest child stars
Culkin began acting when he was just 4 years old, appearing onstage and in small parts in TV shows and movies. Kieran Culkin is opening up about growing up with his massive and famous family in New York City. Kieran, who stars as Roman Roy on "Succession," is one of seven kids shared by Kit Culkin and Patricia Brentrup. The pair never married, though their split in the 1990s and ensuing custody battle became tabloid fodder because Kieran's brother Macaulay had become very famous after starring in 1990's "Home Alone" franchise. Kieran revealed in an interview with Esquire published March 27 that his dad - an actor himself - had all seven try to be actors, though only Macaulay (who his siblings call Mack), Kieran, and Rory pursued it seriously.
The family grew up in the Yorkville section of Manhattan, and Kieran says that even though he was just a kid himself, he felt bad for the way fame affected Macaulay's life. "Poor f*cking guy," he told Esquire of his brother.

For many of us, cinema is an awakening. It is revelatory in that it can showcase what is possible. The moving image acts as a mirror, showing us who we are and giving us glimpses of who we could be. But what happens when you can’t see yourself?
In a 2019 study, the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media examined the representation of Black women in Hollywood. The organization determined that while Black girls and women are 6.5 percent of the U.S. population, only 3.7 percent of leads/co-leads in the 100 top-grossing films of the last decade fit that demographic. In short, for Black girls and teens, seeing themselves on screen is still a rarity.

It was 28 years ago that Jamie Lee Curtis attended the inaugural Screen Actors Guild Awards, as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Helen Tasker in the action comedy “True Lies.” She would watch as Dianne Wiest accepted the prize for her portrayal of another Helen (Sinclair) in the gangster gag show “Bullets Over Broadway.”
Now, almost three decades later, Curtis has once again been singled out by the SAG Awards. She contends for the ensemble award as part of the cast of A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” And she has another shot at the supporting actress title for her turn as the unpitying IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre. “Everything Everywhere” holds an overwhelming lead in the Gold Derby odds for SAG’s top honor, making it almost inevitable that Curtis will become an official champion come February 26.

Gordy, the founder of Motown Records, and Robinson, one of the label’s first signings...

Robinson and Motown Records founder Gordy became the first duo to be recognized with the honor, which is awarded to musicians for their artistic achievement in the music industry and dedication to philanthropy. Taking place in downtown Los Angeles just steps away from where the Grammys will kick off on Sunday, the gala began with a silent auction before launching into a two-hour tribute concert of Robinson and Gordy’s work, starting with a medley from The Temptations that included “My Girl” and “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda: the Musical is a movie directed by Matthew Warchus starring Alisha Weir and Emma Thompson.
‘Roald Dahl’s Matilda: the Musical’ is now streaming on Netflix. A musical film that succeeds in entertaining. Its musical numbers are perfectly orchestrated and choreographed, in this excellent production with performances that, in all their deliberate theatricality, are amusing.
Roald Dahl’s Matilda: the Musical
A very theatrical movie for this Christmas, in this adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic children’s novel.
Roald Dahl’s Matilda: the Musical has the advantage of knowing what it wants, and especially whom it is for, and counts on the brilliant Dahl story. It adapts the rhythm well with a number of surprises in the script.
It is a “film” that works best due the scenes than the sequences, following the theatrical structures.
