Director Zach Cregger was announced last week as the director of Clue – but now he’s swapped that for a Resident Evil reboot.
Zach Cregger is no longer directing Clue. Instead, the Barbarian director is swapping Sony projects, moving from one movie featuring grisly deaths in a mansion to another movie featuring, well… grisly deaths in a mansion.
Just days after being announced as the director of a new Clue film, based of course on the popular murder mystery board game (known as Cluedo in these parts), Cregger has now exited the project.
Cregger isn’t leaving the Sony stable, however. Instead, he’ll be moving over to the PlayStation Productions arm of the studio to tackle a reboot of one of the studio’s most popular and enduring videogame franchises: Resident Evil.

Barbarian director Zach Cregger is set to team up with Sony for a remake of the 1985 classic mystery comedy Clue.
Here’s an interesting story that has emerged this morning regarding Zach Cregger, the director who bought us 2022’s Barbarian, a wild horror that became one of that year’s most talked-about films. The success of Barbarian was enough to earn Cregger a handsome deal with New Line Cinema for whom he will be directing his follow-up film, Weapons.
According to reporting at the time, Cregger’s budget for Weapons is 'double the size of Barbarian's, while he has reportedly scored a string of other concessions such as “a guaranteed greenlight, a guaranteed theatrical release, a controlling interest in a backend pot and Cregger receiving final cut pending a threshold being met during test screenings.’

Better known as Cluedo in the UK, Clue could eventually be a TV series, as Hasbro and Sony announce the latest effort to adapt the boardgame.
Movies based on toys and games bring in audiences these days. People also seem to like murder mysteries, if Knives Out is anything to go by. All of which might explain why Hasbro is partnering Sony in another attempt to adapt the murder mystery boardgame Clue (known in the UK as Cluedo) for the screen.
As reported by Variety, Hasbro Entertainment and Sony have signed a deal to make a film or TV series – at the time of writing, it isn’t clear which route the two corporations will take.
In a statement shared by the outlet, bosses from Hasbro described Clue as “culturally impactful,” which is quite a funny thing to say about an old boardgame that comes with a tiny piece of string and a miniature pistol,...

It might be said that besides murder-mysteries, no other genre rejoices as much in the deaths of its human pawns for a satisfying puzzle. The only one to match this gleeful indulgence and exploitation might be pink film. Chusei Sone's Agatha Christie-esque “Case of the Disjointed Murder” marries these 2 cinematic phenomena in an explosion of violent elegance. Though unequal in its attempts at profundity, “Case of the Disjointed Murder” earns memory as a conflicted venture, made during Sone's ironic struggle to depart from pink filmmaking – an artistic struggle that eventually led to his own, equally mysterious disappearance.

The murder-mystery renaissance really is in full effect right now. The likes of Only Murders In The Building, Poker Face, and Apple TV’s The Afterparty have been making armchair detectives of us all on the telly side of things, but it’s the big screen sleuthing boom that’s had genre fans flocking to the multiplexes with their magnifying glasses and (presumably) deerstalkers most recently. With whodunnits as wildly varied as Park Chan-wook’s sensual Decision To Leave, the superbly silly See How They Run, Rian Johnson_ – which leans hard into the ‘D’ of DC Comics – on offer, it’s not exactly hard to see why, either.
Now, as we prepare to take enough champagne to fill the, erm, canals of Venice with us to see Kenneth Branagh_, we at Empire HQ have put our tan raincoats on and launched an investigation into the very best the genre has to offer.

Murder Mystery 2: Netflix sequel starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler hits streaming milestone
Murder Mystery 2 has enjoyed the second biggest opening weekend of any Netflix comedy film.
Starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler, Murder Mystery 2 was watched over 42 million times last weekend (per Variety) after its debut on 31 March.
The Netflix crime comedy follows on from the original Murder Mystery, which was released on the streaming service in 2019.
In the days after its release, the sequel climbed Netflix’s ratings and has been the most-watched film since Saturday (1 April) in the UK with the first film also ranking highly.
It wasn’t just the UK that loved Sandler and Aniston’s crime-solving couple: the film managed to reach Netflix’s Top 10 in over 90 countries.
Sandler and the former Friends star reprised their roles as Nick and Audrey, who have both given up their jobs to become full-time private investigators this time around.

I can’t imagine anyone holds high expectations for the results of Adam Sandler’s $250m (£202m) deal with Netflix – not the company, its subscribers, or Sandler himself. Much of his straight-to-streaming output, such as 2016’s The Do-Over or 2017’s Sandy Wexler, seems purposefully made for quiet nights in, when the toil of the week has rotted away any ability to concentrate.
Arguably, Murder Mystery (2019) – in which he and Jennifer Aniston played a hapless couple trapped in a real-life game of Cluedo while on holiday – achieved a pinnacle in mindless distraction. It wasn’t all that funny. It wasn’t all that clever. But it was eminently watchable. It’s also funny to see how much its sequel riffs on Knives Out, seeing as the original Murder Mystery preceded that Rian Johnson film and the whodunnit craze it spawned. Because, essentially, Murder Mystery 2 is what you watch if it...

The game that taught you how candlesticks could be used for murder is getting an animated series from Fox.
"Clue," the board game first sold in 1949, was turned into a live-action film back in 1985 and is getting the animation treatment from Hasbro's eOne and Fox Entertainment's Bento Box Entertainment. Don't get this series confused with the 20th Century Studios live-action remake that is set to star Ryan Reynolds, directed by James Bobin ("The Muppets").
If you cast your mind back to childhood, you may recall the board game with teeny tiny murder weapons, rooms where the murder took place, and suspects named Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, and Mr. Green (these names differ in some versions). The game, which has been sold in over 30 countries (where it's sometimes called "Cluedo"), has a murder for you to solve, and now it's happening in animated form.

Actor who was both heart-throb and hardman as Bodie in The Professionals
In a 1980 episode of the hit British cop show The Professionals, an ill-advised villain tries to threaten the ex-mercenary William Bodie with his snarling doberman pinscher. After a brief altercation, Bodie, all sang-froid and minimally curled lip, inquires: "Would your little dog like to chew this electric fire? Or maybe you'll just leave."
This kind of butch badinage, along with rugged good looks, helped make Lewis Collins, who played Bodie in all 57 of the show's episodes from 1977 and 1983, and who has died aged 67 after suffering from cancer, into a household name. During that time he formed one half of Britain's answer to Starsky and Hutch, a crime-fighting duo called Bodie and Doyle who worked for a shadowy criminal intelligence agency, CI5, headed by Gordon Jackson's strait-laced George Cowley. At its height, The Professionals was watched by 12 million viewers a week,...

Actor Lewis Collins has died, aged 67.
The Professionals star passed away in Los Angeles after a five-year battle with cancer, his agent told BBC News.
The actor was perhaps best known for playing Bodie in the 1970's TV drama alongside Martin Shaw.
His agent said: "He died peacefully at his La home surrounded by his family. Privacy is asked for at this very sad time."
The Professionals centred around the cases of the fictional crime fighting unit named CI5.
The ITV programme was ratings success in the 1970s and early 1980s.
Collins auditioned for the role of James Bond in 1982, but was reportedly thought "too aggressive" for the part.
His other roles included Sas captain Peter Skellen in 1982's Who Dares Wins, George Godley in Jack the Ripper and parts in The Grimleys, The Bill, Cluedo and The New Avengers.
