It's the most wonderful time of the year, and that means people are gathering around to watch lots of Christmas movies. If not an outright Christmas movie, they also tend to seek out good-natured entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. Enter "Uncle Buck," which is a stone cold John Candy classic that has been beloved by audiences ever since it first hit theaters 35 years ago. Case in point, the film is once again finding its audience on streaming as the holidays approach.
Director John Hughes' 1989 comedy is currently trending on Amazon Prime Video's most-watched movie list at number nine, per FlixPatrol. While "Uncle Buck" is not technically a Christmas movie, it has a lot of the hallmarks of one, including good-hearted humor, "Home Alone" actor Macaulay Culkin, and yes, John Candy, star of "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" (a film...

December is the perfect time to curl up on the couch, grab some hot cocoa, and lose yourself in these iconic films that bring laughter, nostalgia, and festive spirit. From Jim Carrey’s unforgettable performance in How the Grinch Stole Christmas to the Griswolds’ chaotic holiday antics, these beloved movies are not only topping the charts but also becoming essential holiday viewing for families everywhere. Here are five Christmas movies that are trending this year.
1. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)
This live-action masterpiece starring Jim Carrey reimagines the beloved Dr. Seuss tale. The Grinch, a grumpy recluse with a heart two sizes too small, plots to steal Christmas from the cheerful Whos of Whoville. But his plan unravels as he learns that Christmas isn’t...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series highlighting the scripts behind the year’s buzziest films today shines the spotlight on the marvel that is Deadpool & Wolverine, the superhero mashup that paired Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the third installment of the Merc with the Mouth movie series, and marked the first Deadpool movie at Disney’s MCU.
Like the first two pics — 2016’s Deadpool and 2018’s Deadpool 2, both from Fox — Deadpool & Wolverine hit (and sliced and otherwise pummeled) the spot for fans who had been calling for the antihero team-up. Released at the end of July, it became the biggest R-rated opening of all time both domestically ($211 million) and worldwide ($444.1 million), eclipsing the mark set by the first Deadpool. It eventually became the year’s second highest-grossing film to date (after...

There’s arguably no better Thanksgiving movie than Planes, Trains and Automobiles, John Hughes’ classic road comedy about two strangers (played by Steve Martin and John Candy) who bond while trying to make their way back home for the holidays. It’s not just funny, it’s extremely heartwarming — at least, for those who don’t subscribe to the theory that Candy’s character murdered his wife and keeps her skeletal remains in that trunk.
One memorable joke from the movie wasn’t even a joke, exactly. During their travels, Candy’s character Del Griffith can be seen reading a book: an old paperback copy of a Canuck-themed porn novel called The Canadian Mounted.
The screenplay did spell out that Del is reading a “pornographic novel” and originally contained a scene in which Del remarks that he finished the book (calling it a “filthy goddarn thing”). But the title of...

John Hughes is responsible for the greatest Thanksgiving movie of all time, 1987’s poignant Planes, Trains & Automobiles. This Steve Martin and John Candy-led classic has become a perennial and a movie tons of folks have probably been revisiting this week. However, about four years later, in 1991, John Hughes made another Thanksgiving movie in the same vein, Dutch. Despite being a pretty solid movie with a very recognizable cast, it’s a hard movie to track down nowadays.
Dutch is very much in the vein of Planes, Trains & Automobiles in that it pairs a snooty, white-collar guy with a more down-to-earth, blue-collar kind of guy. The big twist here is that the white-collar guy is a kid, with Ethan Embry (then known as Ethan Randall) playing a prep-school kid who winds up on a long journey home for Thanksgiving with his mom’s new boyfriend, Dutch, played by Ed O’Neill.

It’s Thanksgiving time, and one of the most beloved Thanksgiving movies comes from none other than 80s comedy maestro John Hughes, with the turkey holiday classic, Planes, Trains & Automobiles. The buddy comedy is a classic tale of a journey to be home in time for Thanksgiving dinner, but with travel being so tumultuous around this time, our star, Steve Martin, finds himself stalled and dragging along an unwelcomed companion with John Candy in one of his most famous roles.
About two years ago, the movie was re-released in 4K with a whole flurry of special features. One of the coolest, exclusive features for this release is the unveiling of never-before-seen deleted scenes revealing extended performances from the comedy duo. Deleted scenes aren’t anything new for classic releases. However, this set features a full 75 minutes of deleted and extended scenes that were uncovered from John Hughes’ estate from his own personal archives.

The huge success of “Deadpool & Wolverine” has inspired actor Ryan Reynolds to work on a new project with longtime collaborators Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy, the three of them announced this week.
The new project is their fourth collaboration, following hits like “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project.” Reynolds stated that he would be writing the script for the next year, but he wouldn’t say what the plot was about.
The news comes right after “Deadpool & Wolverine” broke records at the box office. It has made $636 million in ticket sales in the United States, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. It has beaten blockbusters like “Barbie” to become the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time and the seventh-highest-earning Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.

Ryan Reynolds’ brand of humor has made him a beloved star in Hollywood both on and off the screen, and it still doesn’t feel real to him — even when his movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” grosses more than $1.5 billion.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” became a box office behemoth, pulling in an astounding $636 million domestically and securing its place as the 12th highest-grossing film in history. It now sits just behind Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and ahead of Warner Bros.’ summer sensation “Barbie.” It’s also surpassed the 2019 thriller “Joker” to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. And among Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe juggernauts, “Deadpool 3” claims the seventh spot, having recently overtaken “Iron Man 3” globally.
Reflecting on his latest blockbuster with Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast, Reynolds describes the whirlwind of emotions watching “Deadpool & Wolverine” break records. “It feels great,” he says with a laugh, “but I...

I remember the day — March 4, 1994 — when I learned that John Candy, big of heart and large of funny bone, had died from an apparent heart attack at age 43. I was a movie critic and a film writer in the Life section of USA Today, distracted by the Winter Olympics TV coverage of Nancy Kerrigan’s silver medal comeback. But the minute I heard that one of the warmest and funniest actors around had passed away, I poured myself immediately into writing his appreciation.
As someone who grew up in Buffalo, I was lucky to have early access to “Sctv,” the Canadian sketch-comedy counterpart to “Saturday Night Live,” long before the series was picked up by NBC. I was cued into the genius of Candy and his clowning cohorts Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as they inhabited sundry out-sized characters who worked at a fictitious television station.

Frank Griffin started out in Hollywood as an actor and studio laborer before turning to makeup in the mid-1960s, and he went on to work on Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Scarecrow (1973), Westworld (1973), Cinderella Liberty (1973), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Urban Cowboy (1980), Midnight Run (1988), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Vacation (1983), Revenge of the Nerds (1984) and Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985).

After a busy August with the Season 2 premiere of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which continues throughout September with new episodes through Oct. 3, “Batman: Caped Crusader,” and more, Amazon streaming services Prime Video and Freevee will have a comparably quiet September.
Most of the action for the month will come from Prime Video’s sports options. After the Sept. 5 Kickoff Game at Arrowhead Stadium with the defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs going up against the Baltimore Ravens, Prime Video’s third season of Thursday Night Football begins with AFC East champs Buffalo Bills taking on the Miami Dolphins in Miami. The WNBA and Nwsl also continue their seasons on Prime Video, with matches all month long from New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, Angel City Fc, and more top teams.

To say that Ryan Reynolds and Disney might have seemed like odd bedfellows when the studio inherited the R-rated Deadpool franchise following the Fox merger is an understatement.
Reynolds — who wears many hats, including actor, marketer, branding expert and entrepreneur — was at the heart of the audacious marketing campaigns for the two first films (look no further than the poop emoji billboard for the first Deadpool movie that went viral, or Deadpool re-enacting Burt Reynolds’ iconic Cosmopolitan centerfold). How far would Disney go in pushing the boundaries, considering it isn’t in the habit of releasing R-rated movies, at least in modern times? (Its division Marvel Studios never has.)
It turns out Disney’s Asad Ayaz, chief branding officer for the entire conglomerate and president of marketing for the film studio in addition to Disney+, and his team were all in. The mash-up of Disney’s expertise and reach and Reynolds’ marketing savvy,...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe did not invent the post-credits scene, but it did popularize and standardized it in superhero blockbusters to the point where audiences are now expected to stay through the credits lest they miss out on some surprise, some tease of what is to come in the next movie, or simply a funny gag.
Some of the post-credits scenes in the MCU are good, great even, and some are terrible and a waste of time. We have met many MCU characters directly through post-credits scenes, starting with Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, and a few have made repeated appearances, but only one actor's had the honor of appearing in the most post-credits scenes. No, it's not Jackson, even if he kickstarted the Marvel post-credits scene trend in the first "Iron Man." Back in 2022, Chris Evans expressed enthusiasm to reprise his role as Johnny Storm from the maligned 2005 "Fantastic Four," and that it'd be an "easier sell" than returning as Captain America. Well, Evans and all the fans of that movie got their wish when a familiar face appeared in "Deadpool & Wolverine" and shouted the immortal words of the bard himself: "Flame On!"
Sadly, as cool as it is to see Johnny Storm again, he is not long for this world. Immediately, his fire powers are extinguished the moment he faces Pyro from the "X-Men" movies. Then, in one of the best and most shocking scenes in the movie, Storm gets killed in a most gory and brutal way. So shocking was this scene, where Johnny has his skin peeled off and his body explodes like a blood balloon, that even Emma Corrin...

Hugh Jackman's best film, according to Rotten Tomatoes, is 2019's "Bad Education." Hugh Jackman's best film, according to Marvel fans, is 2017's "Logan." And Hugh Jackman's best film, according to me, is 2013's "Prisoners." But the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a different opinion, as the prestigious organization has only ever paid attention to Jackman's 2012 turn in "Les Misérables."
Yes, the beloved Aussie scored an Oscar nomination for Best Actor at the 2013 Academy Awards, but lost out to Daniel Day-Lewis for his portrayal of the titular President in "Lincoln." Not that there's any shame in losing to Day-Lewis, but it's got to be a slight sore point for Jackman as it was the one and only time he earned an Academy Award nom, despite being one of the most versatile actors working in the industry.

"Deadpool & Wolverine" uses the power of a well-placed nostalgic cameo and weaponizes them in the same way "Spider-Man: No Way Home" does, delivering a hugely entertaining experience that also serves as a love letter to Marvel's past. The film is a thank you to audiences that stuck with the genre through the decades, through the good movies and the bad.
From turning Deadpool and Wolverine's journey into the unapologetically gay movie Marvel keeps failing to deliver, to giving one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most solemn actors a chance to go back to a beloved yet goofy role that culminates into a parade of profanity echoing Steve Martin's car rental scene in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," the movie does pick its cameos and roles really well in order to deliver something outrageously funny. There is a lot going on in "Deadpool & Wolverine." One could even say too much. From the gags to the cameos, many Marvel fans would be eager to rewatch the movie and try to catch everything, though /Film's Chris Evangelista disagrees in his not-so-enthusiastic review. Still, there are plenty of silly and irreverent gags to keep the audience entertained. This is a movie that gives one of the best actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe a profanity-laden speech reminiscent of Steve Martin's car rental f-bomb tirade in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," and a movie that introduces the most powerful creature in all of the Marvel multiverse.
Granted, "Deadpool & Wolverine" isn't all jokes. It also serves as a heartfelt celebration of the good, the bad, and the weird of the last 25 years of superhero movies, not only providing several exciting cameos but also paying homage to 20th Century Fox...

"Deadpool & Wolverine" is finally out, bringing Marvel fans everywhere something they've apparently been clamoring for (that's what the box office indicates anyway): tons and tons of gratuitous and extremely fun cameos. The "Deadpool" sequel knows exactly how to play its audience and give them an entertaining popcorn movie that is fun, funny, and also a love letter to a pivotal chapter in the history of superhero movies.
Arguably the single best cameo in a long list of cameos is Chris Evans returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- not to play Steve Rogers, but to reprise his role as Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch from the 2005 "Fantastic Four." It's part of "Deadpool & Wolverine" and its irreverent nod to the 20th Century Fox era of Marvel movies, both the good ("X-Men") and the bad, but mostly just the...

Like any human being with good taste, Ryan Reynolds loves John Candy. The star of the "Deadpool" movies has shared his appreciation for the late actor/comedian, who died at age 43 in 1994, multiple times on social media over the years, including when he shared this touching video tribute to Candy:
(I'd never seen that before, and was on the verge of tears when I watched it this morning.)
In 2020, Reynolds wrote on Instagram, "John Candy passed away 26 years ago today. He always walked that tightrope between hilarious and heartbreaking. His movies mean so much to me. If you haven't seen his work, check it out. He's absolutely beautiful." In 2023, word came out that he's even producing a documentary about Candy that's being directed by Colin Hanks. And as recently as last month, Reynolds randomly shared a meme about Candy in his Instagram stories.

In the 1990s, Hollywood found both success and failure by digging deep into the back catalog of horror master Stephen King. The decade saw some of the best adaptations of his work and some of the worst (we don't need to talk about "The Lawnmower Man"), but its high and low points alike notably drew from lesser-known King works, as many of his major hits were already adapted in the decades prior. "Thinner" falls into this category: Released in 1984, the novel that inspired the movie was well-regarded upon release, but is mostly known now as the book that helped readers identify King as the writer behind pseudonym Richard Bachman.
Plenty of King fans love "Thinner," but the novel about an overweight man who is cursed to lose weight rapidly to the point of emaciation isn't exactly as high profile as the novelist's more zeitgeist-defining works. The Tom Holland-directed film...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is on the wane but remains inescapable. While not able to command the vice-like grip on pop culture it once did, the films and Disney+ shows that make up the modern Marvel world (not to mention whatever the hell Sony is doing with stuff like "Madame Web") continue to arrive, bringing comic book heroes to the screen with varying results. Since 2008, Marvel has been pumping out at least two movies a year. When streaming service Disney+ came along, the prospect for even more Marvel arrived, and audiences had to contend with both big screen blockbusters and smaller TV shows that filled in the gaps. The center could not hold, and what was once escapist popcorn entertainment began to feel like homework. In short, it wasn't fun anymore. It felt like the party was over.

Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die couldn’t be a more apt title for Will Smith, for whom much is riding on the film doing decent business.
If it works, it could jump-start Smith’s movie career more than two years after he slapped Oscar host Chris Rock on live television, tarnishing a public image he’d spent decades cultivating.
In advance of Bad Boys 4 — in which he plays the sort of fun-loving role people enjoy seeing Smith in — The Hollywood Reporter has learned that his agents at CAA have been calling studio production execs for the first time since the slap. Over the past three or four weeks, they have inquired if studios have projects that are right for Smith, and have even thrown out a suggestion or two, according to multiple sources. The hope is that Smith’s next film can be announced relatively quickly, should Bad Boys 4 work.

Marvel debuted a new 60-second promo (check it out here) and poster for Deadpool and Wolverine earlier today when tickets went on sale, and we now have an updated synopsis for the studio's "most significant mistake to date."
We've seen a few different versions (most likely placeholders for merchandizing purposes) of this logline already, but this is by far the most unserious yet!
“Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date - Deadpool & Wolverine," it reads. "A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier... reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to - F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.”

After a busy couple of weeks which saw us getting almost daily Deadpool & Wolverine updates, it's been all quiet lately. Yes, there's a rumoured runtime floating around (we've heard it's inaccurate) but that's really been it.
Now, though, Marvel Studios has released a new behind-the-scenes still showing director Shawn Levy and stars Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) on the threequel's Time Variance Authority set.
Those colourful costumes pop and, yet again, there's no sign of Logan's mask. It's either only in Deadpool & Wolverine for a scene or two or it's been decided that covering Jackman's face in marketing materials isn't a wise move.
"Everyone assumed that Hugh's return was the result of me or Ryan pestering or pitching him relentlessly," Levy recently said of Jackman's return as Wolverine. "But even more miraculously, this was the result of a Hugh Jackman epiphany. He wanted to do...

With numerous films and TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s a daunting proposition for a newcomer to even think about getting caught up on the various characters and storylines.
But Shawn Levy, who directed the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, says there will be no “homework” required to enjoy his film.
“I was a good student in school. I’ll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies,” Levy told the Associated Press.
He added that his goal was to make the already established fans happy but also create a movie that anyone can enjoy.
“I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world,” he said. “But I didn’t want to presume that.

There are entire generations that have no idea that Steve Martin was a stand-up comedian. They may recognize him as one-third of the trio that’s turned Only Murders in the Building into a streaming hit, or the long-suffering patriarch of the Father of the Bride movies, or maybe as that guy with the funny mustache who was in that one thing with Beyoncé (i.e. 2006 Pink Panther reboot). Some might have watched Parenthood or Planes, Trains and Automobiles with their parents when they were younger. He’s the celebrity who,...

The EFM (European Film Market) continues to heat up, with another promising project hitting the scene. Will Smith will star in the biggest-budgeted project at the show, Sugar Bandits. With a reported budget that circles $80 million, Sugar Bandits follows “a former Special Forces solider who joins an elite, vigilante squad aiming to wipe out the drug trade in Boston, but soon learns things are not what they seem.”
Sugar Bandits has sat on the Hollywood sidelines with Universal setting director Joe Carnahan on the project. However, it’s now heading to EFM, where filmmakers scope out independent projects. Sugar Bandits is based on the screenplay and novel Devils In Exile by Chuck Hogan, with Smith and Jon Mone producing through Westbrook Studios. Ryan Shimizaki oversees the project, with Stuart Ford joining the production effort through AGC Studios, which is financing the film entirely. Additionally, Richard Abate produces via 3 Arts Entertainment.

Aaron Stanford is returning to the MCU, as it was revealed in the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer released during the Superbowl on Sunday. He is reprising the role of Pyro which he portrayed in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand.
“I’m very excited to be revisiting this role, and couldn’t think of a better place for Pyro’s resurrection than the Deadpool universe,” Standford tells Deadline in a statement.
While details as to the plot of the film have thus far been under wraps, director Shawn Levy told Deadline at last year’s Toronto Film Festival that the goal was for the film to feel “grounded” and “real” — more like “a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles” than “a descendant of Airplane.”
In a recent appearance on BroBible’s Post-Credit podcast, Matthew Vaughn, the filmmaker behind Marvel titles like X-Men: First Class,...

John Hughes was the patron saint of adolescents who found great success with a series of hit comedies, most of them centering around the plight of teenagers. Yet how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films as both a writer and director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1950, Hughes first came to the attention of Hollywood as a writer after penning “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983) and “Mr. Mom” (1983). That financially successful one-two punch landed him his first directing gig: “Sixteen Candles” (1984). A tender coming-of-age story about a teenage girl (Molly Ringwald) suffering one indignity after another on her sweet sixteen firmly established him as the premiere helmer of adolescent comedies, leading to “The Breakfast Club” (1985), “Weird Science” (1985), and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986).
Yet Hughes also excelled at entertainments outside the classroom, including the road trip farce “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” (1987), starring...

Deadpool 3 is officially wrapping up production, and Ryan Reynolds is celebrating the occasion with a picture of his crotch! Move over, Jareth, there’s a new codpiece in town! The superhero threequel has fought an uphill battle since cameras started rolling, with unpredictable weather, Hollywood strikes, and Hugh Jackman gumming up the works. As the only Marvel Studios film releasing in 2024, a lot is riding on the Merc With a Mouth’s next round of silver-screen shenanigans.
The good news is that fans are climbing the walls for the next Deadpool movie. The sequel carries an air of mystery as Jackman’s involvement means Wade and Logan will finally lock horns on the big screen. Rumors suggest Deadpool 3 includes aspects of multiversal madness, too, leading to surprising cameos and nods to bygone eras of Marvel’s cinematic offerings. Expect the X-Men to get roasted beyond recognition, True Believers.
