Jim Carrey wanted to perform from a very young age and when he was just 10 years old wrote to “The Carol Burnett Show” offering his services as an impressionist. While his request was politely declined it would only be another decade before he was all over television with his antic comedic act. He ultimately achieved the brass ring for comedians of this era when he got to appear on “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.” In 1984 the 22-year-old Carrey was cast as the lead in a TV series called “The Duck Factory” which was supposed to be a star-making vehicle for the actor. Despite its prime placement on NBC’s Thursday night lineup the show quickly failed. Carrey bounced back with small other roles including the lead in the film “Once Bitten” which was a mild box office hit in 1985.

Jack Russell, founding singer of the glam metal band Great White, has died at the age of 63.

Just last month, Russell retired from touring after announcing he was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy. He passed away “peacefully” on Thursday, August 15th, surrounded by his family and friends, according to a statement released by K.L. Doty, who co-authored his memoir.

“Jack is loved and remembered for his sense of humor, exceptional zest for life, and unshakeable contribution to rock and roll where his legacy will forever thrive,” Doty wrote. “His family asks for privacy at this time.”

Russell fronted Great White during its commercial heyday in the late 1980s, singing on hits including “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” “Rock Me,” “Save Your Love,” and “The Angel Song.”

Oxygen True Crime’s Real Murders franchise has added a Los Angeles edition that will explore the seedy underbelly of the City of Angels. Set to premiere on October 6, 2023, Real Murders of Los Angeles is hosted by Garcelle Beauvais and will delve into the murders of a former Raiderette, a UCLA student, and a theater owner, among others.

New episodes will air on Fridays at 9pm Et/Pt.

The franchise kicked off with Real Murders of Orange County in 2020 followed by Real Murders of Atlanta in 2022. The latest addition is executive produced by Stephanie Noonan Drachkovitch, David Hale, and Carey Zeiser.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.

Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. Amazon’s Prime Video has refreshed its slate of content with over 60 new movies, like Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” and the 1973 animated adaption of the children’s book “Charlotte’s Web.”

Prime Video kicks off the start of the month with Doug McHenry’s “Jason’s Lyric,” “Father of the Bride,” and “Little Nicky.”

Prime Video has adapted the one-woman podcast “Empanada Loca” into a new series. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” will begin streaming on the service on July 7. Buckle up, because this one is gruesome. Roach (Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a long prison sentence and works as a masseuse in the basement of a friend’s empanada shop. But when her security is threatened, Roach is driven to extremes to survive.

Season 2 of “Good Omens” also will premiere on Prime Video in July. Arriving July 28, the series focuses on the friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the snarky demon Crowley (David Tennant). While the Apocalypse has been averted, the pair are back living their lives in London, until the archangel Gabriel shows up. The series is based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

James Winburn racked up around 80 credits during his career as a stuntman, but for genre fans there is one credit that really stands out from the pack: Winburn was the stunt double for iconic slasher Michael Myers in director John Carpenter‘s 1978 classic Halloween (watch it Here). In the moment where Dr. Loomis shoots Myers six times, sending him tumbling off a balcony, that’s Winburn performing the stunt. Sadly, it has been reported that Winburn passed away at the age of 85.

One of the first to play one of the big screen’s biggest horror icons, James Winburn donned the Michael Myers mask in John Carpenter’s original Halloween back in 1978, and we’ve learned the sad news this week that the legendary stuntman has passed away at the age of 85.

Winburn passed away on November 19 following an undisclosed illness, EW reports.

A few people, including Nick Castle, played Michael Myers in the original Halloween, with James Winburn performing the memorable balcony stunt in the horror classic’s climax.

“I put on the Michael Myers mask a number of times,” Winburn said during a Halloween Q&a session years back, noting that he filled in whenever John Carpenter needed Michael Myers to do things Nick Castle, Tony Moran and various others could not. Winburn added during that same convention interview, “I doubled [for] whatever John wanted me to do.”

Tom Shadyac's 1994 hit film "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" starring Jim Carrey has, in 2022, been the subject of a deep re-litigation. Upon its release, audiences reacted with the utmost enthusiasm to Carrey's over-the-top-and-then-some shenanigans, laughing heartily at the actor's boundless energy and aggressive strangeness. Even the premise was odd: Ace Ventura was a private investigator who only took cases involving pets and animals. His plum gig comes when the Miami Dolphins hire him to find their kidnapped mascot, a dolphin named Snowflake. 

What made the film worthy of reconsideration was a staggeringly transphobic twist that mocked and derided one of the film's main characters for comedic purposes. The climax of "Ace Ventura" saw a trans woman (Sean Young) stripped down to her underwear in front of dozens of cops as evidence of her guilt in the case. Jim Carrey began his entertainment career in the '70s as a stand-up comedian, where he entertained audiences with physical comedy and spot-on impressions of celebrities like Sammy Davis, Jr., and Clint Eastwood. In the 1980s, he landed smaller roles in TV and movies before becoming a regular on the comedy sketch show "In Living Color" in 1990. Carrey quickly proved to be a valuable asset to the show by lampooning pop culture figures like Vanilla Ice and creating a wacky list of recurring characters such as Fire Marshall Bill and Vera De Milo. Despite being part of an ensemble cast that included other heavyweight talents like David Alan Grier, Jamie Foxx, and Keenan and Damon Wayans, Carrey's comedic abilities stood out. Peggy Pope, who played a secretary in the 1980 movie 9 to 5, appeared in dozens of TV series and acted on Broadway, has died. She was 91. Her family said Pope died May 27 in Fort Collins, Co, but did not give a cause of death.

Born Florence Pope on May 15, 1929, in Montclair, NJ, she began her long career on Broadway in the late 1950s, appearing in small roles in a handful of short-lived plays. She ultimately would appear in seven Main Stem shows through 1975, including the 1970 revival of Harvey, for which James Stewart reprised his Oscar-nominated lead role as Elwood P. Dowd from the 1950 film.

Character actor Peggy Pope, who played the alcoholic office secretary in the hit comedy movie “9 to 5,” died on May 27 in Fort Collins, Colo. She was 91.

Pope’s family announced her passing and plans for a June 27 celebration of life.

Pope was born as Florence Margaret Pope in Montclair, N.J., and graduated from Smith College with a major in theater in 1951. She first appeared on Broadway with Wally Cox in “Moonbirds” in 1959 and starred with Jimmy Stewart in a 1970 revival of “Harvey” on Broadway.

Pope won an Obie in 1968 for her portrayal of a sex worker in John Guare’s “Muzeeka.” She also starred in a revival of “The Rose Tattoo” with Maureen Stapleton, “The School of Wives” with Brian Bedford and “Doctor Jazz” with Lola Falana.

I’m a huge fan of Garth Jennings’ work, from his milk-carton music videos to funny monkey TV ads, and into his feature films, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy and Son Of Rambow. It’s been a long time coming but, after five years of work, Jennings’ third feature, Sing, is about to get its UK cinema release. When we caught up to chat last week, we talked about those five long years of hard work, about the projects that didn’t come together beforehand, and just a little of the plans that Jennings has for now. Thankfully for the October 2018 new releases, Hulu is bringing us the spookies that we need. The Blair Witch Project, The Others, and Child's Play all arrive this month. And if you're looking for some more wholesome creepies, The Nightmare Before Christmas should do. And if that weren't enough, Hulu is debuting its own horror show - anthology series Into the Dark.

For those shamefully unable to get into the Halloween spirit, Hulu is bringing in some other fun film options. Galaxy Quest, Music and Lyrics, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective should help out with that.

Then of course, are the usual and typically deep TV offerings.

A friend of mine and I were deciding what we wanted to do Halloween night and came to the conclusion we wanted to see a movie. I checked times on the local theater’s website and noticed a movie called “Freaks of Nature.”

The blurb describing the movie said it involved zombies, vampires, and humans co-existing in the town of Dillford, until aliens show up and, essentially, wreck everything. As soon as I read this blurb out loud, my friend’s face lit up, he grinned, and said “We have to go to that one.”

So, we did. We had no expectations. The only name we recognized in the miniscule summary was Joan Cusack, and they didn’t even bother to mention what her role would be. I interviewed model/actress Lauren Hutton in late 2007 at her home in Venice, CA. Hutton greeted me wearing a gingham workshirt, battered jeans and no make-up, hair pulled back. She was and is one of the most beautiful humans I've ever had the pleasure of laying eyes on. A sharp mind and tough core resided within, which I quickly found out as our conversation flowed and the hours passed. As she bid me good-night, she handed me a manila envelope. Since premiering at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where it picked up the Fipresci Prize in the Directors’ Fortnight sidebar, Thomas Cailley’s directorial debut, Love at First Fight has been treated to generous critical acclaim. Nabbing three César Awards in February, including for Best First Film, Most Promising Actor, and a Best Actress award for Adele Haenel (trumping competition that included Juliette Binoche and Marion Cotillard). Basically a romantically inclined drama that subverts its conventions by playing around a bit with gender norms, its winning protagonists make this strangely and unpredictably funny film quite charming. Its original title, Les Combattants literally means The Fighters, which would have been much preferred to the horrid English language surrogate.

Let’s be forthright, here: Onur Tukel does not look like your typical Hollywood leading man. No wonder, then, that Summer of Blood is not your typical Hollywood vampire movie (though, now that vampires are sparkly and drive Volvos, who knows what is typical anymore). The fortysomething, pudgy, graying Turkish-American is repeatedly compared to Jerry Garcia throughout this indie horror-comedy, which he wrote, directed and stars in as hapless slacker Erik Sparrow.

Sparrow is, to put it mildly, not a winner. He spends most of his dead-end sales job hitting on his coworker Penelope (Dakota Goldhor) and masturbating in the bathroom, and he turns down a marriage proposal from his beautiful, ambitious girlfriend Jody (Anna Margaret Hollyman) because he is a commitmentphobe. When Jody gets fed up and finally leaves him, it looks like Erik’s lazy, lackluster life has finally dwindled to a standstill. That is, until he becomes a vampire.

Scream Factory is pulling double-duty with both of their dual Blu-ray releases, Love at First Bite/Once Bitten and Vampire’s Kiss/High Spirits, and the cult classic Nekromantik 2 is getting a high def upgrade as well.

Love can be complicated, especially when a relationship has supernatural elements. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, Scream Factory is about to release two Blu-ray double features that celebrate love in various forms: the obsessive nature of Nicolas Cage’s Peter Loew in Vampire’s Kiss, the ghost/human coupling in High Spirits, the desperate seeking of companionship in Love at First Bite, and the wide-eyed puppy love of Jim Carrey’s Mark Kendall in Once Bitten.

Nothing has drawn more attention in recent weeks than the official Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser/trailer that was released on Friday, Nov. 28.

On the off chance that you haven't seen it yet, here it is in all it's exciting – albeit brief – glory.

Scream Factory is on a blood-sucking blitz. Hot on the heels of announcing Love at First Bite and Once Bitten Blu-rays to come out near Valentine’s Day, the diligent distributor has now revealed they are bringing Blacula and its sequel, Scream, Blacula, Scream to Blu-ray for the first time in February, adding to the month’s fanged fiend theme.

Both 1972’s Blacula and 1973’s Scream, Blacula, Scream star William Marshall in the sharp-toothed titular role, with the iconic Pam Grier as Lisa Fortier in the sequel. Extras have not been revealed at this time, but are likely cooking in the cauldron. Here’s the official announcement from Scream Factory on Facebook:
