This movie was filmed around December 1981 and January / February 1982.
Second and final (to date) star teaming of actress Helen Morse and actor Bryan Brown. The first had been the year before in the popular Australian TV mini-series remake A Town Like Alice (1981). Interestingly, both productions were remakes, though this picture was more inspired by Casablanca (1942) than being a remake of it.
This movie was not the only late 1970s / early 1980s movie that was a modern take on the Hollywood classic Casablanca (1942). Both Cuba (1979) and Cabo Blanco (1980) also re-treaded the Casablanca (1942) concept.
This Australian movie emphasized the reunion of its two lead stars by boasting the following slogan on its Australian movie posters: "Bryan Brown - Helen Morse . . . TOGETHER IN FAR EAST". Some other promotions stated "together again".
Bryan Brown received top / first billing, Helen Morse received second billing, John Bell received third billing and Raina McKeon received fourth billing.
