Venice VR Expanded will run online this year.

The virtual reality line-up for the Venice Film Festival (September 2-12) features 31 competition titles, including a project created by Jon Favreau.

Badged Venice VR Expanded, the strand will run entirely online. The out of competition line-up includes nine of the best international VR titles and four projects developed during the Biennale College Cinema - VR.

The Favreau project is Gnomes & Goblins, an original production from Wevr, MWMi and Golem Creations that features a virtual world created by the Lion King director in collaboration with VR director Jake Rowell.

August’s home entertainment releases are going out in a blaze of glory, as we have a bunch of great titles coming our way on August 29th, including a handful of cult classics such as The Man with Two Brains, The Manster, Amsterdamned, Vicious Lips, and a two-disc special edition set for The Slayer from Arrow Video.

As far as recent horror titles go, be sure to keep an eye out for Demon, Inconceivable, Timebomb, The Hollow One, The Evil in Us, and Safe Inside. Warner Bros. put together a quad pack Blu-ray set featuring four Stephen King classics (It, Salem’s Lot, The Shining, Cat’s Eye) undoubtedly to get everyone ready for Pennywise next month, and Paramount is keeping busy with several Blu-ray re-releases, including Clue, The Addams Family, and Galaxy Quest.

Following the annual Toledo Children’s Hospital Halloween parade, staff members took patients to the playroom. Prolific screenwriter Everett De Roche, who died in Melbourne yesterday, was one of the instigators of the Ozploitation genre movement of the 1970s and 80s.

The Us-born writer, who migrated to Australia with his wife in 1968, was 67. He had battled with cancer for three years. He started as an in-house writer for Crawfords for four years in the 1970s, penning episodes of Homicide, Division 4, Ryan and Matlock Police.

His first feature screenplay was Colin Eggleston.s Long Weekend in 1978. Among his film credits were Richard Franklin.s Patrick (1978), Simon Wincer.s Harlequin (1980), Franklin.s Roadgames (1981), David Hemmings. Race to the Yankee Zephyr (1981), Russell Mulcahy.s Razorback (1984) and Franklin.s Visitors (2003).

In 2008 he and director Jamie Blanks collaborated on a remake of Long Weekend, for which he added two characters, a baby dugong and several scenes. "The basic environmental message works as well today as it did in 1978," he said.

The film business was saddened to receive the news of the passing of SFX impresario and creator of illusions, Conrad Rothman on 21 June 2013 - the winter solstice. Conrad died of a heart attack on his way to a hospital in Sydney. An American import into our film industry in the 1970.s, Conrad was perhaps one of the first SFX men to hit our shores, and he was most welcome. .He was thought of as the .stunt-glass-kid. of Australia..no one did glass like Conrad., ex-wife and dear friend Natalie Hammond said of him. Conrad went to film school with Steven Spielberg and Richard Franklin. He worked often with the latter and wished he had with the former!

His final years were spent working out of Fox in Sydney in an office and workroom with Aet, where he was known as Corny. Conrad was the genuine eccentric and much loved by everyone.

The Australian film industry was saddened to hear the news of the death of sound recordist extraordinaire Paul Clark on 5 July 2013, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Paul was on location shooting with Living Films, on a Canadian production, when he became unwell. Determinedly he completed the scene they were shooting before he left the set. Initially, he had complained of a sore foot. A blood infection followed by diabetic and heart complications ensued and Paul passed away peacefully. Friend and producer Chris Lowenstein was at Paul.s side until the end at Chiang Mai Ram Private Hospital at 6.00am local time. Friend and fellow sound recordist, Gary Wilkins, Paul.s Thai friends and workmates arranged a Buddhist funeral days later. Paul.s two sons, Simon and Sam were able to attend the ceremony. Rarely has distributor exploitation been as blatant as in the case of Simon Wincer’s The Day After Halloween (1980), a ludicrously-named Australian outing originally optioned under the name of Centerfold, then changed to Snapshot after the producers were unable to secure that title, and was eventually released as One More Minute. It appeared on video shelves here in the U.S. on VHS both in 1983 from Catalina Home Video under the title of The Day After Halloween and in 1985 as The Night After Halloween on Magnum Home Entertainment. The film came on the heels of the John Carpenter-scripted Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) which was set against the milieu of the fashion industry. Filmed in 1978 and released in Australia the following year, The Day After Halloween has absolutely nothing to do with John Carpenter’s seminal holiday suspense yarn, and isn’t even a slasher film. It isn’t even a thriller.

Australian filmmaker Brett Anstey got in touch to let us know about his new chiller Damned By Dawn, and sent along a handful of exclusive photos; you can see them below the cut. Currently in the final stages of postproduction, the movie was produced by Anstey and Luke Gibson.

“The film centers on a banshee whose wailing wakes the dead,” Anstey tells us; specifically, it raises walking corpses during a thunderstorm, and the creatures terrorize a family. “The original idea was to make a period horror, one heavily influenced by the classic Hammer films,” he continues. “But it soon became apparent we couldn’t afford Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt, horse-drawn carriages and boobs. Fog, atmosphere and heavy doses of Irish mythology were all within our budget, though, so those elements remain.”
