Prime Video is set to premiere “Angry Young Men,” a three-part documentary series that captures the personal and professional journey of legendary screenwriting duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, known collectively as Salim-Javed.
Produced by Salman Khan Films, Excel Media & Entertainment and Tiger Baby, the docu-series is executive produced by Salma Khan, Salman Khan, Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti. It delves into how Salim-Javed revolutionized Indian cinema in the 1970s by reinventing the Bollywood formula, introducing ‘angry young man’ heroes in a romance-dominated industry, and popularizing the action-drama genre. The original ‘angry young man’ was Amitabh Bachchan who, after a string of middling films, began his journey to superstardom with Prakash Mehra’s “Zanjeer” (1973), written by Salim-Javed.
When producer Zoya Akhtar, daughter of Javed Akhtar, set out to chronicle their story, she knew it was a tale long overdue for telling. “I grew up with them and watching these films,...

I noticed something curious. Director Siddharth Anand of the film ‘Fighter’ says that his film flopped because 90% of Indian moviegoers have never sat in an airplane! I was amazed, amused, but, most of all, I was worried. Worried, because this is how the maker of a Rs 400-crore film thinks!
My mind instantly went back to Shakti Samanta’s ‘An Evening In Paris’ (1967), where a bikini-clad Sharmila Tagore is sea skiing as Shammi Kapoor courts her hanging from a helicopter. After learning what Malhotra had said to explain why his film had failed, I wondered how many people hang from a helicopter to court a woman! I don’t know anybody who has done such a thing and still, ‘An Evening In Paris’ was a major hit! I can cite hundreds of such examples.
Of course, the audience must first identify with the subject of a film. The other factor...

The youngest of Bollywood’s famous Kapoor brothers, he did not have their one defining and enduring cinematic image – Raj’s naive "tramp" identity in the Charlie Chaplin tradition or Shammi’s Elvis-like jiving, rebellious "playboy" persona, but went to surpass both in sheer diversity of his acting.
With his copybook good looks, rakish smile, infectious charm, toothy grin and languid drawl, or the air of earnestness, playing romantic roles, be they of businessmen, police inspectors, college students, et al came naturally to him, but Shashi Kapoor went on to play more ‘common man’ roles, decadent princes, aging poets and even angels with the same charm and intensity.
Born on March 18, 1938 in the then Calcutta to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarn ‘Rama’ Devi, Balbir Raj ‘Shashi’ Kapoor was destined to walk in his family’s footsteps on the silver screen.

Rich in content it may already be, but Respawn Entertainment has absolutely no intention of scaling back its plans for Apex Legends.
The battle royale, which launched in 2019 and swiftly became an overnight success despite the lack of any real advertising, just recently celebrated the arrival of Season 7. Notable not only for adding all the now-standard features fans expect on a trimonthly basis, Ascension also debuted a third map, Olympus, alongside usable vehicles. Owing to the new arena’s vast size and scale when compared to Kings Canyon and/or World’s Edge, the so-called Trident allows squads to mount up and speed around the utopian city’s streets and even engage in mobile warfare.
It’s not quite the long-awaited introduction of pilotable mechs from Apex‘s spiritual predecessor (Titanfall), but who knows what the future holds? Respawn has stated in the past, after all, that dropping the bipedal...

Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan, recently saw the launch of its children's book titled as 'Geography with Bajrangi Bhaijaan'. Also present for the launch was Salman's father Salim Khan and at the event he spoke about the importance of education and how it helped him when he had nowhere to go.
When asked Salim Khan about how did they come up with the idea, he said, "My father used to tell us to study a lot which in turn helped me a lot because when I came to become an actor, main samajta tha ki Dilip Kumar ki dukaan bandh karva dung (I used to think that I could outdo Dilip Kumar). But nothing happened. I didn't have anywhere to go and at that time only my education helped me. How many ever of my films have been made, be it Haathi Mere Saathi, Zanjeer, Sholay or Trishul, education has been my biggest contributor.

Writers around the globe are acknowledged to be the key for a movie's success but it is pathetic that Bollywood has always given them a step motherly treatment. However the writers' pair, who changed the trend and demanded remunerations at par with stars, are unarguably the only star writer duo Salim Javed, who penned hit movies like Sholay, Deewaar, Zanjeer, Don, Trishul, Shakti, Mr. India etc.
Salim Khan in an interview said, "The reason why we demanded such high remunerations was because we were confident of our skills and wrote scripts that were hard-bound, a trend that was initiated by us."

The astonishing Hindi actor Manoj Bajpayee has his best role in years in Anurag Kashyap's "Gangs Of Wasseypur." A five-hour epic mob drama in two parts depicting a decades-long intra-Muslim vendetta, "Gangs" is headlong, hand-held, violent entertainment. It manages to keep a dozen major characters and their agendas clear while rarely pausing to take a breath. It is also one of those rare movies that acknowledge the influence of movies and other forms of pop culture in shaping the values and motivations of its characters. "Gangs" is partly modeled upon, and at key moments knowingly refers to, the culture-shifting revenge melodramas of "Angry Young Man" Amitabh Bachchan that upended Bollywood cinema in the 1970s. The explosive opening moments of the late Yash Chopra's mega-hit Bachchan vehicle "Trishul" ("Trident," 1978) play out in a theater for several of this film's characters, who afterwards earnestly discuss...

This is no place for the weak. This world as we know it. And this film, as we discover with the thrill of chancing upon an unexpected little gem.
Inspired from a Spanish film, is it? I really don’t give a fig where writer-director Ahishor Solomon got the raw material for this gripping cat-and-mouse tale. Does the kitchen where the food on the table originates really mean anything? What counts is the quotient of curiosity and suspense simulated by the script. And there, John Day ranks very high.
Not for a while have we seen a film so steeped in despair, so swathed in anxiety, so audaciously draped in despair and yet it engages our senses without miring the plot in morbidity.

From the time the first theatrical of Aurangzeb went online and created a huge buzz, everyone has been speculating the film being remake of Trishul (1978).
When Atul Sabharwal, the debutante director was confronted on this piece of news, he dismissed the rumors and said, "If anything it's similar in treatment to Deewar. Aurangzeb is an ode to Salim saheb and Javed saheb's writings. Its tribute to their cinema." Aurangzeb very interestingly set in land mafia or the upsurge of Gurgaon from a small village on map to India's one of the biggest and fastest growing cities.
Atul has depicted Gurgaon against the backdrop of two families who are at loggerheads with each other. And just like Salim-Javed's work, Aurangzeb has a heady mix of dialogues and action.
Aurangzeb is based on a construction company in Delhi and has two families depicted - one of a Policeman's and another of the Gangster's.

The astonishing Hindi actor Manoj Bajpayee has his best role in years in Anurag Kashyap's "Gangs Of Wasseypur," which is Tuesday's kick-off gala presentation at the 11th Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (Iffla). A five-hour epic mob drama in two parts depicting a decades-long intra-Muslim vendetta (Part II screens at the Iffla tomorrow), "Gangs" is headlong, hand-held, violent entertainment. The explosive opening moments of the late Yash Chopra's mega-hit Bachchan vehicle "Trishul" ("Trident,...

There are some who thrive on becoming a part of history. And then there are those who take it upon themselves to change it. Yash Raj Chopra belonged to the latter category. Since his first outing “Dhool ka Phool” in 1959. he churned story after fascinating story – a fertility unparalleled in the history of Hindi Cinema. Without sounding preachy or pretentious, his megaphone blared the saga of our times. At a time when India was coming to terms with the socio-economic realities of freedom, his debut film was soaked in Nehruvian Socialism. And to prove he wasn’t a flash in the pan, the very next film was on religious fundamentalism: Dharmputra (1961). Yash Chopra's soul sister, muse and Mata Saraswati- reincarnated Lata Mangeshkar isn't singing in the director's new venture. It's a first in his long and illustrious career as a filmmaker. From the time Yash Chopra turned producer-director in 1973 with Daag, Lataji's voice has been integral to Yash Chopra's creativity and cinema right until his last directorial venture Veer-Zaara.
In a conversation with this writer Yashji gushed, "Lataji has always been so kind to me. She can never say no to me. As long as I am there and she's there, she'll continue to sing for my films. She's a legend beyond all human definition of the word. She's my sister and I'm so proud of her. That's why I say she's one singer who doesn't follow music, music follows her. When I see her I feel very small and humbled. There're no words to describe her. She's truly the Bharat Ratna.

This revisionist masala films definitely warrants a look back at the many roles Amitabh Bachchan has unleashed his righteous fury. However, with each of these roles, Bachchan offered a different interpretation of his most iconic persona. You could say Bachchan’s Angry Young Man was a successor to the Disillusioned Young Man of the 50s played by Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Guru Dutt.
