Often cited in lists of shows that "failed" or were "cancelled" quickly, this series actually ended before it ever aired, because of a creative disagreement between Andy Griffith and the network. The network wanted a more action oriented show with fights and chases, while Griffith wanted a more reserved tone. Unable to come to an agreement, Griffith and/or the network pulled the plug on the project. The two episodes which had been filmed as Griffith preferred both aired to very high ratings, but the project wasn't revived.

Andy Griffith and Nick Nolte were the only actors from Winter Kill (1974) to return for the series. Nick Nolte took over the role of Deputy Troy who was originally portrayed by John Calvin.
