The stars of the Bill & Ted movies, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, are going to star together again. This time, they will be starring in a Broadway production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot directed by Jamie Lloyd, as part of the 2025-26 season of Atg Theatre in the fall of 2025.

Reeves will play Estragon, while Winter will play Vladimir. They announced the roles in a joint statement: “We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays.”

The Jamie Lloyd Company, Atg Productions, Bad Robot Live, and Gavin Kalin Productions collaborated on the production of “Waiting for Godot,” with 101 Productions acting as general manager.

Jessica Chastain has been set to receive the 38th American Cinematheque Award, with Oppenheimer producer Charles Roven to claim The Power of Cinema Award in a tribute to be held at The Beverly Hilton on December 6.

Chastain is the latest in a line of American Cinematheque Award honorees, going back to 1986. The opening minutes of Lilja Ingolfsdottir’s debut feature evocatively convey the feeling of falling in love. Two incredibly attractive people lock eyes at a party and then have a series of casual encounters in which their mutual attraction becomes obvious. Then we’re treated to a montage depicting their whirlwind courtship, marked by intense physical passion and the sort of over-the-top giddiness accompanying a brand-new relationship. Unfortunately, that sort of feeling doesn’t last forever. A mere six minutes into the film, there’s a cut to “seven years later,” when it becomes obvious that the now-married couple are experiencing serious relationship troubles.

But the Norwegian film isn’t really about a couple breaking up. It’s about a woman finally discovering who she is and what she needs, and as such it succeeds beautifully. Loveable, receiving its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, should find receptive audiences worldwide.

There’s been a lot of heat around London’s new Romeo & Juliet, understandably so given its pairing of director Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal, A Doll’s House), known for his radical remodeling of classics, usually around A-list actors, with young global superstar Tom Holland. The latter is returning to the stage for the first time since Billy Elliot: The Musical at the very start of his career, his name causing tickets to sell out in just two hours.

It’s ironic, then, that one thing this production itself lacks is heat — romantic, dramatic, tragic heat. There is much to commend, but it suffers from a single, strategic mistake on the director’s part, to mute the action, quite literally, since much of it is played in whispers and mumbles; even miked, at times the actors are barely audible. The result is that this tale of violent family rivalry and courageous...

It has only been 12 years since New York audiences saw a production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic nineteenth-century play “An Enemy of the People.” But unlike that last staging at the Manhattan Theatre Club, the version that just opened at Circle in the Square Theatre on Mar. 18 is a departure, thanks to the vision of director Sam Gold and a new adaptation of the text by Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog. “Enemy” runs through June 16, the day of the 2024 Tony Awards.

“No theater on a dead planet!” is a chanted refrain that does not appear in Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play An Enemy of a People. The science vs. commerce debate is uncannily current, as Herzog thoughtfully makes clear. In a clever trick that pulls us into the community about to witness the spectacular downfall of the public figure crusading for truth at the center of An Enemy of the People, a bar descends from above during the pause between acts, with theatergoers filing onto the stage to be served shots of aquavit while musicians and singers perform traditional Norwegian songs. Several audience members stay seated around the periphery when the action resumes. The house lights also remain up, giving us no escape from our complicity as town physician Dr. Thomas Stockmann, played with bristling intensity by Jeremy Strong, is pilloried with ridicule that escalates into physical violence.

Thousands of Tom Holland fans hoping to witness the actor’s West End return might be wondering wherefore all the tickets went.

The Spider-Man actor’s limited engagement in Jamie Lloyd’s Romeo & Juliet sold out two hours after going on sale this morning.

General sale tickets went up for grabs at midday today, selling out by 2 p.m. London time, according to local reports. Pre-sale started at 8 a.m. with an estimated 60,000 people joining a virtual ticket-buying queue.

“Getting tickets to Tom Holland’s Romeo & Juliet is starting to feel like eras tour trauma,” wrote one X/Twitter user as quoted in the London Evening Standard, referring to the fast-selling Taylor Swift tour.

So far, there has been no casting announced for the role of Juliet.

The show will play on the West End in London, England at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Saturday, May 11 through Saturday August 3.

It’s unclear if there are plans to move the show to Broadway in New York City, which does happen with some West End productions.

Tom Holland will star as Romeo in a new version of Romeo & Juliet in the West End this spring.

The play will be directed by Jamie Lloyd, the director of the retooled Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger, as well as the minimalist versions of A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain and Betrayal, starring Tom Hiddleston, on Broadway. Additional casting for the production, which calls itself a “pulsating new vision of Shakespeare’s immortal tale of wordsmiths, rhymers, lovers and fighters,” has not yet been announced.

Before landing the role of Spider-Man in the Marvel films, Holland made a name for himself as one of the young stars of Billy Elliot: The Musical in the West End. He most recently appeared in the Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room, and has starred in films including Uncharted, opposite Mark Wahlberg, and The Devil All the Time and Cherry.

Tom Holland will tackle the Bard this spring when he plays Romeo in director Jamie Lloyd’s West End production of Romeo & Juliet.

Lloyd and Holland made the announcement this morning. Romeo & Juliet will run at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Saturday, May 11 through Saturday August 3. Additional casting, including Juliet, was not announced, nor whether the production will follow the path of other Lloyd hits – including the pared-down stagings of A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain and Betrayal with Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox and Zawe Ashton, to name two – with an eventual move to Broadway.

Holland, though best known for his leading role in the Spider-Man film franchise and, more recently, as the star of the Apple TV+ limited series The Crowded Room, actually got his show business start on the stage, when at age 11 he landed a supporting part in the West End production of Billy Elliot: The Musical.

The hit London revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard is heading to Broadway later this year and bringing star Nicole Scherzinger and the rest of the West End principal cast with it.

As Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye revealed before Christmas, Scherzinger will make her Broadway debut reprising her acclaimed performance as Norma Desmond.

Although production dates and venue are still to be announced, producers said today that the musical will star Scherzinger along with her West End castmates Tom Francis (as Joe Gillis), Grace Hodgett-Young (Betty Schaefer) and David Thaxton (Max Von Mayerling).

In addition to preview and opening night dates, additional casting will be announced shortly. A fall 2024 opening has been widely speculated.

Jamie Lloyd’s production of Sunset Boulevard will transfer to Broadway in 2024, with Nicole Scherzinger reprising her role as Norma Desmond.

The revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical moves to Broadway from London, where it has been playing since September. Scherzinger will be joined on Broadway by her London co-stars: Tom Francis as Joe Gillis, Grace Hodgett-Young as Betty Schaefer and David Thaxton as Max Von Mayerling.

Exact dates and a theater for the Broadway run have not yet been announced. The London run is scheduled to end Jan. 6.

This will mark the Broadway debut for Scherzinger, who was formerly a member of the pop group The Pussycat Dolls. She previously starred in Lloyd Webber’s Cats on the West End and has made appearances as a judge on shows such as X Factor and The Masked Singer.

Jessica Chastain is divorcing herself from any lingering hopes for her potential involvement in an adaptation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

During an interview with E! News that published online Thursday, the actress clarified that there is “zero possibility” that she would star in an onscreen version of author Taylor Jenkins Reid’s best-selling 2017 novel. Chastain had previously said that she would be open to landing a role in light of fan-generated campaigns for her to play character Celia St. James in the film adaptation that has been in development at Netflix.

“But I love how excited the fans are,” Chastain said in the new interview. “When I was working on Broadway, every single day, they’d be outside, when I was signing, with the books. I just love how wonderful that fan base is.”

Fans of Jessica Chastain and Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” are in for another disappointment: The Oscar winner confirmed there is “zero possibility” she will star in the film adaptation.

Netflix first announced a feature film version of the 2017 novel — about a fictional Old Hollywood movie star who gives her final interview — back in 2022. Writer Liz Tigelaar (who’s worked on “Brothers & Sisters” and created the CW series “Life Unexpected”) was attached to pen the script, with Leslye Headland (“Russian Doll” co-creator and “The Acoylte” showrunner) attached to direct.

“I love how excited the fans are,” Chastain told E! News in a recent interview. “When I was working on Broadway, every single day, they’d be outside, when I was signing, with the books. I just love how wonderful that fan base is.”

Frances Sternhagen, the legendary Broadway actress who won two Tony Awards, was nominated for another five and achieved lasting and widespread recognition for her comedically stern portrayal of Esther Clavin, the demanding mother of insufferable postman Cliff Claven on Cheers, died Nov. 27 of natural causes. She was 93.

Her death was announced by her son, the actor John Carlin, on Instagram.

“Frannie. Mom. Frances Sternhagen. On Monday night, Nov 27, she died peacefully at her home, a month and a half shy of her 94th birthday,” Carlin wrote today, ending the tribute with “Fly on, Frannie. The curtain goes down on a life so richly, passionately, humbly and generously lived.”

The adaptation, penned by Heidi Schreck and directed by Lila Neugebauer, is scheduled to begin previews at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater on April 2, 2024, and open on April 24.

The classic play sees Sonya (Pill) and her uncle Vanya (Carell) living on a family farm in isolation, only to have their lives upended by Sonya’s sick father (Alfred Molina) and his wife (Anika Noni Rose), who move in with them.

Uncle Vanya will feature sets by Mimi Lien, costumes by Kaye Voyce, lighting by Lap Chi Chu and Elizabeth Harper, and sound by Mikhail Fiksel and Beth Lake.

The upcoming Broadway revival of Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People starring Jeremy Strong has landed two more heavy hitters: Michael Imperioli will costar opposite Strong, and Plan B, the production company of Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner & Jeremy Kleiner, has signed on as a producer.

The project marks the Broadway debuts for both Imperioli and Plan B. Complete casting will be announced at a later date.

The play, from Herzog, who recently adapted A Doll’s House, starring Jessica Chastain, for Broadway, had its world premiere at Yale Repertory Theatre in 2017 and later appeared Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop. The play follows a single mother who uses optimism and humor, as well as the help of the women around her, to make her way through “an impossible family situation,” according to the production.

Rachel McAdams will star in the Broadway premiere of “Mary Jane,” a new play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog. Anne Kauffman, who recently oversaw an acclaimed revival of “The Sign in Sydney Brustein’s Window,” will direct. The production will begin previews on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at the Samuel J. With the Tony Awards – and a seriously orange New York City sky – prompting some Broadway productions to reduce their playing schedules last week, total box office and attendance was down a bit, with the 33 shows taking in $30,961,479 for the week ending June 11.

In all, four productions – Kimberly Akimbo, New York, New York, Shucked and Summer, 1976 – had preplanned seven-performance schedules, while Camelot and Hamilton canceled their Wednesday performances due to the poor air quality conditions on June 7. (The June 11 matinee of Six was a Theater Development Fund Autism Friendly buyout performance.)

While the box office impact of Sunday’s Tony Award victories for Kimberly Akimbo, Leopoldstadt and Parade, among others, as well as the various shows’ Tony broadcast performances, won’t be reflected on the box office charts until next week and later, most of the nominated productions reported strong numbers leading into the big night.

On Sunday night, Broadway honored the best live theater of the year at the 76th annual Tony Awards.

At a time of the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, it was a possibility that the ceremony would not happen this year, but the WGA and the Tony Awards’ organizers reached an agreement where the show would not be picketed and the writers would not work on the telecast. The previous time this occurred was in 1988 when Phantom of the Opera and Into the Woods competed for Best Musical.

The Tonys was the first major ceremony to take place amid the current writers’ strike. While other awards shows need a host and numerous presenters to say written remarks about the competitors and provide good ratings, the Tonys already have a built-in fan base that only requires around a dozen performances and winners’ speeches to succeed.

When the nominations for the 2023 Tony Awards were announced in May, Ain’t No Mo’ earned a pleasantly surprising six nominations, despite fears that the Tonys would forget about the play that closed months earlier despite a star-studded campaign to save it.

But when the 2023 Tony Awards were handed out Sunday night, Ain’t No Mo’ failed to win a single award for which it was nominated.

Other multiple nominees shut out include nine-time nominee & Juliet and six-time nominees Into the Woods and the Jessica Chastain-fronted A Doll’s House.

Even Chastain didn’t win the best actress Tony some experts expected her to take home, losing to fellow Hollywood star Jodie Comer (Prima Facie).

The 2023 Tony Awards just honored a fresh group of incredible talents. Trophies were handed out at the United Palace Theater in NYC on June 11. This year's big winners include "Killing Eve" star Jodie Comer for her role in "Prima Facie," the play "Leopoldstadt," and the musical "Kimberly Akimbo."

"Shucked" star Alex Newell and "Some Like It Hot" star J. Harrison Ghee also made history as they became the award show's first openly nonbinary acting winners. The Tony Awards do not have gender-neutral acting categories. Newell, an alum of "The Glee Project," took home the award for featured actor in a musical. Ghee also won in their category, best actor in a musical.

The annual theater award ceremony was hosted by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, who is emceeing without a script amid the 2023 writers strike.

“Prima Facie” is a 100-minute, one-woman play by Suzie Miller that follows a young barrister, Tessa, who often represents men charged with rape. Placing her faith in the court, Tessa isn’t conflicted about the predators she defends…until she is raped herself and must grapple with the ways the court system is systemically broken for survivors of sexual violence.

On Sunday evening, the 2023 Tony Awards will recognize the best of Broadway during the 76th annual celebration hosted by Ariana DeBose. The ceremony, which unfolded a bit differently this year after the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike with studios over fair compensation, revealed the winners of 26 categories while still providing a showcase for many of the top nominees with live musical performances.

Leading up to the big night, a total of 27 new productions were nominated, with the musical adaptation of Some Like It Hot coming out on top with a total of 13. The other top musicals were & Juliet, New York New York and Shucked with nine each and Kimberly Akimbo with eight. The most nominated revived musical, meanwhile, was Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which also garnered eight nods.

On the play side, Ain’t No Mo’ and Leopoldstadt were the most nominated originals...

The 76th annual Tony Awards are set for Sunday, June 11, with plenty of musical performances, returning host Ariana DeBose, a new location venue — and no writers.

Airing live from the United Palace theater in New York City’s Washington Heights, the Broadway awards ceremony is scheduled for 8-11 p.m. Et/5-8 p.m. Pt on CBS and streaming live and on demand on Paramount+.

A live, 90-minute pre-show, The Tony Awards: Act One, hosted by Julianne Hough and Skylar Astin, begins at 6:30 p.m. Et/3:30 p.m. Pt. The pre-show will be available for free on Pluto TV via smart TVs, streaming devices, mobile apps and online by going to Pluto TV and clicking on the “Pluto TV Celebrity” channel. No payment, registration or sign-in is required.

With the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, the Tonys presentation this year will have no scripted elements. The WGA has agreed not to picket the event.

Although the show is not expected to include the pre-written jokes, banter and introductions typical for awards ceremonies, the broadcast will feature performances from the casts of nominated best musicals and revivals including Camelot, Into the Woods, & Juliet, Kimberly Akimbo, New York, New York, Parade, Shucked, Some Like It Hot and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Also scheduled are performances from the casts of Funny Girl, which opened last season, and Joaquina Kalukango, the Paradise Square winner of the 2022 Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. The cast of A Beautiful Noise, the Neil Diamond musical that did not score any nominations, also will perform.

Also scheduled is a special performance for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre recipients Joel Grey and John Kander.

As for the awards, the musical Some Like It Hot comes in with a leading 13 nominations, with & Juliet, New York, New York, Shucked tying for second with nine. Kimberly Akimbo and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street had eight noms, while Ain’t No Mo’, A Doll’s House, Into the Woods, Leopoldstadt and Parade scoring six apiece.
