Starring Christopher Lee, Thorley Walters, Karin Dor
Cinematography by Ernst W. Kalinke, Angelo Baistrocchi
Directed by Terence Fisher, Harald Reinl
While Hammer Studios depended on bosoms and blood to rejuvenate a listless horror industry, their new contract player had some high octane ideas of his own. His name was Christopher Lee and though the hulking actor towered above the crew and co-stars, he proved shockingly agile as the newborn creature in 1957’s The Curse of Frankenstein. No matter how hospitable or well-tailored, his Dracula was a clear and present danger—fleet of foot and supernaturally strong. And in 1959’s The Mummy, he turned the slow-moving immortal into an Olympian killing machine, outpacing his victims like an undead Usain Bolt.

John Fogerty performs Creedence Clearwater Revival classics in the latest installment of Rolling Stone’s “In My Room,” a new Igtv series in which musicians perform from their homes in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Fogerty’s performance follows Brian Wilson‘s and Angelique Kidjo‘s. The clip opens with Fogerty sitting in his yard, decked in his signature flannel and accompanied by his dog named Creedence. “These are certainly different times that we’re living through,” he says. “Wash your hands … nobody really knows how long this is going to last,...

Out of all of Poe’s works, few have had as big of an impact on me as “The Pit and the Pendulum.” Like many youngsters with an interest in the macabre, it was the first to immediately grab my attention, its title conjuring images of a massive, swinging blade cutting a poor sap wide open. Of course, there’s more to the poem than that—it’s focused less on the titular blade and more on the paranoia it creates, as well as painting a portrait of the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition. It also has, quite infamously, one of the most frustrating deus ex machinas of all time, where the French army stops the swinging pendulum mere seconds before it can bisect our bound protagonist, much to the disappointment of English students the world over. While it’s hardly Poe’s best work, it’s certainly among his most iconic,...

“the first film rated V for violence”
“Positively the most horrifying film ever made”
“Guaranteed to upset your stomach”
This is how you market a film, folks. All of the above (and more) is found on the poster for Michael Armstrong’s Mark of the Devil (1970), a particularly nasty bit of Witchploitation that surprisingly manages to shine a provocative light on religious hysteria and hypocrisy.
This German production was released in North America by Hallmark Releasing (not the greeting card company, but a film distributor that released another bastion of good tidings, Last House on the Left) in April of ’72, and myriad distributors in various parts of Europe early ’70. Reviews were decidedly mixed, but the box office was huge, especially for a grimy exploitative horror film that happily wallows in its own depravity. I’m inclined to agree with audiences here – while not a lot of fun, Mark of the Devil...

With the death of horror film legend Christopher Lee, the last of the legendary honor guard of horror has passed on. He was part of an elite group that created the horror genre. Lee’s passing is a reminder that it’s been a long time since we had a new horror film superstar. Is the day of the horror film specialist gone forever? Where are the big-screen boogie-men for the 21st century?
Once upon a time there were a group of actors, known as the ‘screen boogiemen’ who created the horror film/monster movie genre (starting in Universal Studios and later in Hammer Studios.) They were specialists who understood the psychology and performance style of horror cinema and became legends in the industry. The first was silent film star Lon Chaney Sr. (Phantom of the Opera, London After Midnight, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Unholy Three, the Monster,...

Let me tell ya, creeps, nothin’ gets the ol’ Xiii’s motor hummin’ quite like a fright flick that is more akin to a fever dream than one of yer more pedestrian linear narratives. And for my money (roughly equivalent to $1.32 Us cash and a third party, out of state, presumably bad check for $16.45), no one does it better than Director Dante Tomaselli! So, before we begin our regularly scheduled revoltin’ reviews (this week featuring Varsity Blood, Jersey Shore Massacre and The Possession Of Michael King) and other assorted jackanappery, let’s check in with ol’ Dante to see what bats stir in his belfry of the damned!

This is easily the least exciting ratings bulletin update I can remember and I've been doing this for a long time. The only title of note that jumps out at me is the musical-drama Metallica Through The Never directed by Nimrod Antal and starring Dane DeHaan and the boys of Metallica. Concussion is a Radius title, but other than that, I leave it to you to sort out the exciting bits. Afternoon Delight Rated R For strong sometimes graphic sexual content, language and some drug use. Bedlam Rated R For strong violence including torture and rape, language, and some sexuality and nudity. C.O.G. Rated R For language and some sexual content. Concussion Rated R For strong sexual content and some language. The Little Rascals Save The Day Rated PG For some mild rude humor. Louder Than Words Rated PG-13 For brief strong language, some thematic material and smoking.

In 1988, the Honk Kong authorities decided to classify the output of the Hong Kong film market. They came up with a certificate – Category 3 (which would be the same as the Us NC17) for films that had strong sexual content, were violent or were just considered ‘out there’.
The creation of Category 3 had a knock on effect on film makers, in the Hk film boom of the early 1990s, about half of the films being produced were Category 3 soft core pornos.
The category also became an umbrella for extremely violent films that dealt with taboo subject matter.
Alas the Hk film boom went bust and we don’t get to see many Category 3 movies these days, so in nostalgia – I present 5 Category 3 Hk Nasties.

This week, "The Voice" gods spared us a two-hour show and gifted us with a peek at Nicholas David not just without two pairs of glasses, not just without cataract sunglasses, but without any glasses at all.
But before we get to a de-spectacled St. Nick, Carson Daly informs us that only one contestant will be eliminated on Tuesday night's results show and the news has Nicholas doing some sort of chicken dance. For fans of the cluck-tastic move, worry not, it resurfaces.
Jaimie: "Whoa Whoa. Nicholas looks like a lion."
Chelsey: "Rawwwwwrrrrr"
Jaimie: "Everyone looks so fancy tonight."
Chelsey: "Cee Lo looks oddly normal, just your regular member of the rap community."

When we last reported on Tomaselli, he was finally set to shoot something after who knows how many issues with The Ocean (which apparently got shelved), and that something was Torture Chamber. I said this in the piece in the link you can click above, this guy has great old school horror flare and if you haven't seen Desecration I'd highly recommend it. Tc is currently in post and I can't wait to see footage!
Torture Chamber is about a 13-year-old boy possessed by unspeakable evil. It's probably the first serious independent horror film in a long time that's in the vein of The Exorcist. The demon is called Baalberith, which, if you believe in demonology, tempts its host to blasphemy and murder," he told the site. "Jimmy Morgan is a pyromaniac, horribly disfigured from experimentation with drugs. This Catholic boy's family is crawling with religious fanatics. His mother believes...

New York -- Actors, producers and union representatives will speak out against New Jersey's plans to eliminate the state's production tax credit program at a hearing Wednesday.
Facing a big budget deficit, Gov. Chris Christie has proposed ending the $10 million annual program as of the beginning of the state's new fiscal year on July 1.
But industry folks highlight an increase in productions and entertainment industry jobs created since the launch of the incentives for film, TV and digital media projects.
Wednesday's hearing comes as New York state legislators continue to argue over their state's budget proposal, which includes $420 million in annual production incentives over five years, but has been held up by political conflict. N.Y. Gov. David Paterson in his budget bill listed the production incentives program as a key revenue generator as the credits have shown to boost tax revenue well ahead of any state outlays.

It has been nearly two years since last we spoke about Dante Tomaselli's Torture Chamber, and after quite a few setbacks thankfully the horror gods have finally prevailed! Tomaselli is getting ready to begin filming the movie later this month in New Jersey and New York!
Torture Chamber is about a boy possessed by an evil so powerful no priest can exorcise it. The boy comes back to his hometown after a failed attempt at it with an army of burned children at his command, whom he uses to abduct both innocent and guilty, dragging them to a nearby castle and subjecting them to all sorts of punishment. Bring it on!
The film is rockin' quite the cast, too, including Vincent Pastore (The Sopranos), Ed Neal (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), Lynn Lowry (The Crazies), Marilyn Burns (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), and Christie Sanford (Desecration).

You haven't seen Iranian Kidney Bargain Sale? Then you haven't dipped a toe into the motliest crew on record
The other day I finally got a chance to see Iranian Kidney Bargain Sale, a documentary I'd been meaning to get to for some time. Chronicling the adventures of assorted young Iranians who sell their kidneys to buy a taxi, or finance their education, or pay off debts, Iranian Kidney Bargain Sale is not the kind of movie that is readily available at most local video stores. But it is available – free – in the movie section at YouTube. So is a lot of other stuff.
Mostly when I visit YouTube it is to watch cats falling off chairs, parodies of Heath Ledger's turn as the Joker or sportscasters being tormented by stalking sock puppets. But it was recently pointed out to me that YouTube also has a section that is...

Back in July of last year we reported that horror maestro Dante Tomaselli was casting for his next feature, Torture Chamber and then heard nothing after. We thought he was going to be The Ocean which has been in development, but according to this interview with The Cathode Ray Mission, Tomaselli says that "I'm on the brink of shooting the film.
