In a live presentation of a restored copy of the film, the Director told how the intended final was cut. An executive producer took exception to the final text, where it was question of the Portuguese people being miserable ("desgraçados"). Other people and himself tried to show him that, in context, after showing images of Christ crucified, and allusion to pain and death, it was not disrespectful and it was a direct quote from a major Portuguese poet and writer (Miguel Torga: Diário). The man was obstinate. Then, suddenly, a woman's voice raised in anger, vituperating him for being so backwards as wanting to have a word deleted from a Portuguese writer's text... It was his Spanish wife - and he accepted the text to remain as was. Subsequently, the government censorship achieved what he did not, and the whole sentence was excised from the film.
