The traditional Japanese sandals which Zatoichi wears in the film are known as geta. The two large 'teeth' on the soles are called ha, while the sole which the foot rests upon is called dai (stand).
Tadasu Jumonji (as portrayed by Mikio Narita) is the eponymous 'chess expert', however the game seen being played in the film is in fact Shogi. Shogi is sometimes referred to as Japanese chess or the Game of Generals. Shogi means general's board game.

While this is the twelfth Zatoichi film, it is only the third Zatoichi film to be directed by Kenji Misumi, since his work upon the first film in the series, 'Tale of Zatoichi' (1962), and the eighth film in the series, 'Fight, Zatoichi, Fight!' (1964).
