- [first lines]
- Sheriff Mitch Bowers: Okay, crawl out!
- Jane Lowe: [skinny dipping in a pond] Well, you go away first!
- Sheriff Mitch Bowers: Oh, that'd be neglect of duty.
- Penny Lowe: Well, at least turn around. You're not much of a gentleman!
- Sheriff Mitch Bowers: Huh! I never was! Now get out!
- Bob Steele: [Telling his mother the news about how one of the inmates died] And she was five months pregnant. She was just a kid herself. "Baby", we called her. Nobody even knew her name. That's the worst part about it: she dies in a strange place without friends or anybody, and nobody even knows her name.
- Jane Lowe: [One of the workers has dumped an empty cotton bag on her head] Hey, why don't you warn a guy! With two heads you'd still be a moron!
- Bob Steele: The Law? Mother, I don't care about the Law. And I don't think you will either, not after I tell you a few of the things that are going on out at Mr. Tropp's private little kingdom.
- Bob Steele: Suppose I came before you? Do you think you'd be doing me a favor by sending me out to this ranch? No, I go because I got to! I live in a shack. I sleep on a canvas cot. There are four wash basins and two showers for 20 guys. And unhealthy food, that I am paying for. You know what I found out about that food? Tropp's feeding canned dog food and he calls it "beef stew"!
- Judge Cecilia Steele Tropp: Oh, no! No! Russ wouldn't do a thing like that!
- Bob Steele: What do you mean he wouldn't do it? He's doing it! Mother, I saw the empty cans.
- Sheriff Mitch Bowers: If any of you monkeys escapes, enough dough will be taken from the daily pay of the rest of you, and make up a kitty of $200 for the reward.
- Penny Lowe: [singing] Get to feelin' like a Rolling Stone, Haven't got a place to call my own, I keep a-endin' up with nothin', And the time is flown, Rollin' like Rolling Stone...
- Penny Lowe: That's were we got our start.
- Jane Lowe: Entertaining.
- Sheriff Mitch Bowers: Strip tease?
- Penny Lowe: Songs, dances, skits, anything.
- Jane Lowe: Don't bother briefing him.
- Judge Cecilia Steele Tropp: You are vagrants! Without visible means of support. Hitchhiking about the country. You have pled guilty. I now sentence you, Jane Lowe, and you, Penny Lowe, to 30 days confinement.
- [Penny sticks her middle finger in her mouth and looks at Jane]
- Judge Cecilia Steele Tropp: Now, that may seem harsh to you. But, I'm going to give you a choice. You may serve your sentence in the County Jail--or you may serve it as agricultural workers on a ranch. There you will be housed and fed. You will do healthy, outdoor work, for which you will be paid. And you will regain your self-respect!
- Jane Lowe: We never lost it, your Honor.
- Russ Tropp: Now what was this catfight all about?
- Jane Lowe: Don't call me a cat!
- Russ Tropp: You got a wildcat's temper, I'd say. I asked a question.
- Lillibet: It was over my bed.
- Russ Tropp: Get your clothes and get out! You're back to pickin' cotton.
- Lillibet: Oh, no, Russ. Please! I'm sorry, honey, I promise you I'll be good. Please, Russ! I've worked hard for you! I've done everything I could to make you happy.
- Russ Tropp: And another thing, don't do any talking--or bragging.
- Russ Tropp: Don't you see, honey, after this harvest I'll be rich. And next season, I'll be wealthy!
- Judge Cecilia Steele Tropp: You mean, we'll be.
- Russ Tropp: Of course, I meant we.
- Russ Tropp: Labor's so scarce this season. The other ranchers are beginning to belly ache. It's only natural when they drive by my places and see I've got crews at work.
- Judge Cecilia Steele Tropp: Well, maybe it's be only fair to certify some prisoners to them.
- Russ Tropp: Fair? Fair! I'm not interested in what's fair. Now, listen, you know that I spent $2,000 in the right places to get those county ordinances changed so that we could put prisoners to work on farms. I chunked in a big wad of dough to get you elected too. Oh, no. This is my idea. I thought of it. I made it legal. And I'm taking the profits from it. All of 'em! Who else in the Valley's got cotton pickers at 75 cents a day?
- Judge Cecilia Steele Tropp: Please stay for dinner, Russ.
- Russ Tropp: Oh, I'm sorry, I can't.
- Judge Cecilia Steele Tropp: At least a drink, then. Your favorite, lover boy. Gin and tonic!
- Pinky, the cook: Here me out, my friend. I am a just man. Even a philosopher, of parts. Possibly the most erudite bum for miles around. But, in this day of crass materialism, with dog eat dog, and man bite man, I claim that the laborer is worthy of his hire and the artist of his doom.
- Bob Steele: After Pop died, she got so she hated it around here. She wrote me in Formosa she was going to sell out.
- Russ Tropp: You came and I heard you, and I promise to phone our station manager in the morning.
- Penny Lowe: I'm very grateful, Mr. Tropp.
- Russ Tropp: That's not enough, Penny. There's one basic fact you've got to learn, starting right now. Life is a matter of horse trading--of deals--of favors for favors.
- Pinky, the cook: You know, my dear, in this area, there are many homes equipped with a large electronic box--with a window in it. And in this window appear pictures, that so fascinate the citizen that they sit in front of it for hours.
- Penny Lowe: [singing] Dancing at a party, When Joe walked in, I came with Pete, But, I left with him, Oobala Baby, He's my Joe, Oobala Baby, Love him so, Oobala Baby, Never, never, never, Let me go, Young 15, I love my Joe, Sweet 16, I let him know, 17, He got the clue, Now, at 18, Oo-oo-oo!
- Bob Steele: I don't have to worry about you. You can take care of yourself. You little wildcat.
- Jane Lowe: Thanks, Bob. You're real gone. I like you a lot.
- Bob Steele: Yeah, you're--you're real gone, yourself.
- Jane Lowe: What do you intend to do?
- Penny Lowe: Do? Don't be square. I'm going up there and singing his ears out, right now!
- Judge Cecilia Steele Tropp: What you mean is you wanted to talk about Bob. That's why you took me out tonight.
- Russ Tropp: No, baby, of course not. I wanted to have some time with you alone. Look, believe me, kitten, I'm thinking about you. But Bob's no kid. He's inquisitive. He's been around. Now, he's gonna figure out our set-up.
- Judge Cecilia Steele Tropp: Set-up? Don't use that term, Russ. That's a gangster's term. What we're doing is absolutely legal.
- Russ Tropp: All right, Cecilia. Now, we saw to that. But your boy, my dear, is a do-gooder.
- Penny Lowe: I'm not gonna make any nasty bargains, no matter what. When you've got ability, you don't have to.
- Penny Lowe: [singing] You may think you're handsome, baby, You may think you're smart, You may think you're so good lookin', That you can steal my heart, But, you're as slimy, baby, As a salamander, Slip and slide away...
- Bong: [singing] No, you ain't gonna make a cotton picker outta me, Bong, bong, bong, You can make-a me sing, Or make-a me dance, Make me rock right outta my pants!
- Penny Lowe: [singing] Hello, boys, If I'd known you were comin', I'd a baked a--rum cake! Go, Go, Calypso, Go, Go, Calypso, Go, Go, Calypso, Go, Everybody, Go, Go, Calypso...
- Go, Go, Calypso Male Chorus: Tell us gal, Why you shake de hips so
- Penny Lowe: Cause I'm gonna *rock* de Calypso!
- Go, Go, Calypso Male Chorus: Go, Calypso
- Penny Lowe: Me talkie funny
- Go, Go, Calypso Male Chorus: Go Calypso
- Penny Lowe: I take de money
- Go, Go, Calypso Male Chorus: Better Go Calypso
- Penny Lowe: I get de jiggles
- Go, Go, Calypso Male Chorus: Better Go Calypso
- Penny Lowe: Everything wiggles!
- Penny Lowe: [singing] Winkle and Jiggle and Wiggle and Rock, Jingle and Wingle and Wiggle and Rock, Jiggle and WIngle and Wriggle and Rock, Slip and Slide Away, Oh, Jiggle and Wiggle and Wriggle and Rock!
- Penny Lowe: Calypso gal, She pretty bare, On neck de pearl, On finger de ring, Want to know what else she wear? Not a thing!
- Go, Go, Calypso Male Chorus: Wow!
- Go, Go, Calypso Male Chorus: [singing] Come on, gal, sing "Banana Boat".
- Penny Lowe: De "Banana Boat", she get my goat!
- Go, Go, Calypso Male Chorus: OK, gal, shake de banana!
- Penny Lowe: Come, boys, and carry my bananas!
- Lillibet: This is my bed.
- Penny Lowe: What do you mean? This is where they put me.
- Lillibet: It was mine before.
- Penny Lowe: We're sisters and we're staying together!
- Lillibet: I don't care if your Siamese twins!
- Jane Lowe: Get your hands off her, you big trollop.
- Lillibet: What's that mean? Trollop?
- Bong: Trollop, my dear, means a soiled dove, a fallen angel. To put it sweet and neat, a lady of easy virtue.
- Lillibet: You take that back or take a beating!
- Jane Lowe: Well, OK, come on if you want an Italian haircut.
- [catfight]
- Russ Tropp: That's enough of this nonsense. Remember what I told you, Lillibet. You're half way back to the pokey right now.
- [exits]
- Lillibet: Cotton-pickin' creep!
- Jane Lowe: Oh, save your energy. He's all business.
- Lillibet: Yeah, all kinds, including shady, fishy, funny, and monkey business.
