The Retrospective of the 65th Berlin International Film Festival will celebrate the centenary of Technicolor. The Retrospective will present around 30 magnificent Technicolor films, some of which have been elaborately restored. They were made in the early years between the dawn of Technicolor and 1953 – and include six British films.
“The blazing red of Southern skies in Gone with the Wind or the ecstatic yellow of the raincoats in Singin’ in the Rain – in those days, the play of dramatically intensified colours was a sensation. The Technicolor process combined with cultural and economic trends to produce great cinematic works of art that still thrill audiences today,” says Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick.
As of 1915, inventors Herbert T. Kalmus, Daniel Comstock and W. Burton Wescott developed the two-colour process Technicolor No.

A slew of classic Disney movies are hitting for the first time on Blu-Ray, including one double-pack release, and you’re going to want to make sure to pick these up. You haven’t paid attention to some of these titles for a while, and it’s about time you got the chance to catch them on Blu-Ray. The best part is that there’s a great mix of releases hitting. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is all but lost in the cultural consciousness, and it deserves a return. The Academy Award-winning movie from the year I was born is filled with a lot of fun and adventure, and like most Disney films, holds up well for a whole new generation.
The rest of the group covers a great spectrum, including two animated “big” titles, and a 10th Anniversary release. There’s a lot to expose your family to here, so check out all the info below,...

Lana Turner movies: Scandal and more scandal Lana Turner is Turner Classic Movies’ "Summer Under the Stars" star today, Saturday, August 10, 2013. I’m a little — or rather, a lot — late in the game posting this article, but there are still three Lana Turner movies left. You can see Turner get herself embroiled in scandal right now, in Douglas Sirk’s Imitation of Life (1959), both the director and the star’s biggest box-office hit. More scandal follows in Mark Robson’s Peyton Place (1957), the movie that earned Lana Turner her one and only Academy Award nomination. And wrapping things up is George Sidney’s lively The Three Musketeers (1948), with Turner as the ruthless, heartless, remorseless — but quite elegant — Lady de Winter. Based on Fannie Hurst’s novel and a remake of John M. Stahl’s 1934 melodrama about mother love, class disparities, racism, and good cooking, Imitation of Life was shown on...

I remember her fondly as the villainess Lucretia in the outrageous Toho Sci-fi adventure Latitude Zero but Patricia Medina was an actress with a solid career and an impressive number of memorable credits who worked with Orson Welles (Mr. Arkadin) , Vincent Price (twice – Moss Rose and The Three Musketeers), Abbott and Costello (A&C In The Foreign Legion), Francis the Talking Mule (Francis), and the Three Stooges (Snow White And The Three Stooges). Voluptuous and exotic-looking with a deep sultry voice, the British-born Medina began her film career in 1937 and was married to actors Richard Greene and Joseph Cotton. Patricia Medina was 92

Batman and "The Dark Knight" aside, D.C. Comics haven't had much joy on the big screen, with last year's "Green Lantern" being only the latest in a series of misfires, although they're hopeful that next year's "Man of Steel" will revive Superman. We say revive, but actually the superpowered Kryptonian only last year wrapped up a popular ten-year run with the TV series "Smallville."
While that show was a long-running hit, they've again not had much success in moving it beyond the single character: Batman spin-off "Birds of Prey" lasted a single season, "Human Target" didn't quite make it, and last year's "Wonder Woman" never made it beyond a pilot. But that doesn't mean they're done trying, as the CW is getting ready to shoot a pilot for "Arrow," a TV series based on the popular hero and Justice League member Oliver Queen, aka Green Arrow, and just debuted...

Here at Tmp, we’re a bunch of movie nerds...Seems like a no-brainer, but as such, we tend to have unique items on our Christmas lists. So if you’ve got a movie buff that you need to shop for this Christmas, maybe our own individual wishlists will aid you in finding that perfect gift.
Carla
The reason it took so long for me to write something down on my wish list is not lack of wanting something, but it is because I want everything. However, since we are not writing a novel, I did manage to narrow it down to two things:
I love Anthony Hopkins! He is one of my favorite, if not the favorite, older Hollywood actors. The man is undoubtedly a living legend in the film world. What Hopkins fan would not want an autographed photo from Silence of the Lambs? As a bonus, this...

Actors Luke Evans, Kellan Lutz and Henry Cavill at Comic-Con
Getting into the superhuman shape required to play Greek gods and heroes was no easy feat for the men of Tarsem Singh’s upcoming Immortals. But listening to British actor Luke Evans, who plays Zeus, the grueling workouts were nothing compared to the temptation of the craft services table. “It was just full of bad stuff, which I thought was just evil, considering we had to keep in shape,” Evans said while promoting the film at San Diego Comic-Con. “They had plenty of candy on their craft table, we just had to stay away from it.”
Evans as Zeus
But it wasn’t a solo fight for Evans and Olympian co-stars Kellan Lutz (Poseidon) and newcomer Corey Sevier (Apollo), along with Henry Cavill and Stephen Dorff, who while playing mere mortals were still expected to get into godly shape. “We...

Hollywood needs a hit
Actually, Hollywood needs a bunch of hits.
Actually, Hollywood needs a bunch of big, fat, through-the-roof hits.
And with the summer – and the year – half over, the time to come up with them is running out.
The movie business finished 2010 with the second highest domestic box office on record: $10.2 billion. But this was a misleading, oh, let’s call it a “symptom.” That ten billion and change was like the midpoint in every episode of House where the brilliant diagnostician thinks he’s figured out what’s ailing this week’s guest star, his team begins treatment, and, just as the patient seems to be getting better and the regulars are congratulating each other on the save…the patient throws a conniption fit, thrashing around on the bed and spitting up blood.
Part of that ten billion-plus came from a nearly 20% hike in average tickets prices...

An awesome new trailer for the upcoming film, Immortals, due out on 11th November this year, has gone up over at RyanSeacrest.com, and it has plenty of epic new footage to add to the first trailer we saw back in April.
Tarsem Singh will be returning as director five years on from his film, The Fall, and after largely financing that film himself, the $115m. budget for Immortals is a substantial increase, and so far, it looks like the money has been put to great use.
Immortals has got a great cast with a mix of rising stars and established talent, including Henry Cavill (The Tudors, the upcoming Man of Steel), Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans, and the upcoming The Three Musketeers and The Hobbit), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), John Hurt (Alien, V For Vendetta), and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler, Iron Man 2). A trailer for Tarsem Singh's Immortals was recently screened at WonderCon which will hopefully surface online at some point in the near future. In this interview with Comingsoon.net, Luke Evans (The Three Musketeers) and Henry Cavill (Superman)share their thoughts on the script and working with the director Tarsem Singh! Meeting with Tarsem and signing on for the movie Henry Cavill: I received a script that was very much in its infancy and worked from there. My agent said, "You've got to meet this director. You've got to, got to, got to." I said, "Okay, fine. I'll do it." I went in and met with Tarsem and fell in love almost immediately. What a man. Infectious energy. He showed me all the concept art and walked me through his vision for the movie. He just blew me away. I walked out of that room really wanting to be a part of it.

A 'ballet who?' ballyhoo flares up over Portman's Oscar-winning Black Swan performance, just as the DVD comes out in the Us
The big story
Our journalistic colleagues in home news and business are used to juggling with conflicting sets of figures: crime statistics that arrive in the morning and are turned on their head by mid-afternoon; rival measures of inflation, house price indices and the like. We on the film desk don't feel quite so at home in these number-flinging fact fights, especially when half of the argument seems to be taking place in French. Our heads hurt. What's it to be? First of all we had Benjamin Millepied, Natalie Portman's choreographer partner for her Oscar-winning performance in the weird ballet film Black Swan, responding to accusations that she had taken undue credit for her dance double's work: "Honestly, 85% of that movie is Natalie." The double, according to Millepied,...

Around here, I’ve found if you want to grab people’s attention, open with a bit about Gale Harold. The bad boy of Queer As Folk has been cast in The CW pilot The Secret Circle. He’s a heterosexual love interest, and we don’t know if the pilot includes a gay character at all, but Kevin Williamson is running the show, so there’s always hope. And I’ll be happy just watching Harold onscreen next to Thomas Dekker.

British actress Juno Temple has signed on to Christopher Nolan's third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, according to Variety.
She has been under consideration for the role of a "street-smart Gotham girl" - see my earlier report for suggestions on who that might be.
The 21-year-old (pictured) was in Atonement, both St Trinian's films and is playing Queen Anne in Paul W.S. Anderson's upcoming The Three Musketeers.
Following news that Viggo Mortensen is not the baddie in Zack Snyder's new Superman movie, talk has turned to other names.
According to Latino Review, Edgar Ramirez (The Bourne Ultimatum, Vantage Point, upcoming Clash of the Titans 2) is under consideration, while Deadline is reporting that Michael Shannon (Vanilla Sky, Revolutionary Road) is a contender.
Meanwhile, Snyder tells MTV he would be interested in casting Joe Manganiello - the runner-up for the Superman role landed by Henry Cavill - in his 300 follow-up Xerxes.

FilmNation Entertainment and Likely Story have cast Hollywood’s latest leading-man, British actor Luke Evans (Tamara Drewe) to star in the action-thriller The Amateur American. Written and to be directed by Ross Katz, The Amateur American is scheduled to shoot in Europe in September.

FilmNation Entertainment is building the action-thriller The Amateur American around British actor Luke Evans. The pic, written and to be directed by Ross Katz, is scheduled to shoot in September. It's another case of a financier speculating on an actor it thinks will turn into one of the next young stars, and also another in a growing trend of offshore thesps tapped to play Americans. That has become a regular occurrence in superhero movies from Batman to Superman and Spider-Man, among others. What has happened to the American action hero gene pool? FilmNation was sold on Evans after watching his work in its just-wrapped The Raven, in which he starred alongside John Cusack. Evans also played Apollo in Clash of the Titans, plays Zeus in the upcoming Immortals, and Aramis in The Three Musketeers.Writer-director Katz produced such indie films as In The Bedroom and Lost In Translation, and made...

Exclusive: CAA has signed HBO True Blood star Joe Manganiello and Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief star Logan Lerman. Both actors have followed their agent, Kami Putnam-Heist, who moved from Wme to CAA on January 3rd as scooped by Deadline. At the time, she brought only 127 Hours star James Franco with her. Manganiello is reputedly a possible candidate for the Zack Snyder-directed Superman film that Chris Nolan is producing. Lerman next stars in the Summit/Constantine film The Three Musketeers, and was also in James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma.

The Russian impresario had a profound effect on 1920s film-making, yet he never made a movie himself
Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes sparked a revolution in taste after the first world war, taking modernism out of the salon and into the music hall. The splendid exhibition Diaghilev and the Golden Age of the Ballets Russes, currently showing at the V&A, covers the impresario's legacy in music, dance, fashion, painting, and literature; but less well documented is the spell he cast over British film. Michael Powell, who drew on 1920s memories of the Diaghilev milieu for The Red Shoes, was just one among a generation of cineastes who found inspiration in the same source.
Ballet sequences held a special appeal for the likes of Anthony Asquith and Thorold Dickinson, who cast the young Audrey Hepburn as a ballerina in Secret People; but their interest went beyond merely recording dance on film.

We’ve got new movie posters dribbling out our ears at the moment, including new one-sheets for Tron: Legacy, The Three Musketeers, Tree of Life, Man On A Ledge, and Arthur Christmas.
That’s five separate movies to take a look at, not to mention mock and/or praise as being worthy of our anticipation, so let’s not waste any more time and jump right in, shall we?
Tron: Legacy
Disney is still in the midst of its marketing bonanza for this winter’s 3D tentpole pic, Tron: Legacy and released yet another one-sheet for the film this week – in addition to the recent international posters (though the Tron throwback poster remains our favorite). This week, featured front and center is non-other than the pic’s antagonist, Clu 2.0 (a.k.a. CGI…

In the history of the modern American cinema, there are but few legacies of makeup artists. While the legendary Burman and Dawn names each include three generations of makeup artists, there is but one lasting family that features four working generations: the Westmores of Hollywood. With ties to virtually every studio in the annals cinema, the Westmores have created classic makeups in top contemporary film and TV shows back to the earliest years of silent film.
George Westmore, the patriarch of the Westmore clan at the turn of the century, worked as a wigmaker in his native England — where he was born in 1879 — and gave birth to sons Mont (born in 1902), twins Perc and Ern (born in 1904), Wally (born in 1906), and a daughter, Dorothy (born in 1907). The young family traveled to the U.S. to seek better opportunities and maintained a wig-making and beauty salon business which floated amongst various cities,...

Last week, we reported Evan Spiliotopoulos was set to write Wanted 2–the other comic book movie. Yeah, you read that right, the writer who wrote Pooh’s Heffalump Movie and The Nutty Professor is writing the sequel to last year’s just-above-average summer “blockbuster.” Mark Millar, graphic novel creator and producer of the sequel, tried to quiet concerns but the Spiliotopoulos’ repertoire speaks for itself.
Millar, opting to create a story with producers instead of writing another comic book, had a number of comments on his message board regarding the issue. He had this to say in response:
“Never listen to any commentators as they never know anything about who’s coming back, etc. It’s just speculation and 99% of the time these guys don’t have access to the people who know. ‘Wanted 2′ is being made in a very tight circle at the moment.”
