Known as "The Man of 1000 Faces", Chaney signed a legal affidavit declaring all the voices he performed in this, his only talking film, were actually his own. Thus, in addition to multiple characters, he performed multiple voices.
Filming was arduous for Lon Chaney, who was suffering from cancer and had trouble getting through many of his scenes.
Victor McLaglen, could not be loaned out from Fox to reprise his role of Hercules from the original silent version of this film, so the part was eventually shortened in the final cut.
