Jake LaMotta had one of the best chins in boxing history. In over 110 fights against the greatest middleweights in history, LaMotta was only knocked to the canvas once in his entire 14 year career. Turning pro in the early 1940s, Lamotta ran up an impressive undefeated streak before losing. He was the first fighter to defeat the great Sugar Ray Robinson (Robinson was 40-0). Claimed to have "taken a dive" against "Blackjack" Billy Fox in New York City. Fox was 49-1 with 49 knockouts. Captured the World's Middleweight Title from the legendary Frenchman Marcel Cerdan. Made two successful title defenses. Was knocked down by light-heavyweight Danny Nardico in West Palm Beach, Florida in the early 1950s. Made an ill advised comeback and lost to Billy Kilgore in Miami Beach. Ran a popular nightclub on Miami Beach in the 1950s. Served a short prison term. Beautiful blonde stunner Carol Vitale was born on November 14, 1946 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Carol grew up in New Jersey with her six half brothers and sisters. At age 12 Vitale went to New York City and won a dance contest. Moreover, she won second place in a track and field competition. Carol not only actively participated in drama and the glee club during her high school years, but also dated the captain of the high school football team. Vitale's career as a model began at age 18 when she moved with a friend to Florida. In Florida Carol posed for Oldsmobile commercial ads, was a spokes model for the biggest racetrack in Florida, and was a finalist in the Miss Florida World contest. Moreover, she worked for five years as a Bunny at the Playboy Club in Miami. Vitale was the Playmate of the Month in the July, 1974 issue of "Playboy." Carol did three additional pictorials for "Playboy" and even graced the cover of the August, 1972 issue.
In 1979 Vitale moved to Los Angeles, California and got a job working in the publicity department at Universal Studios. She became interested in broadcasting in the early 1980s and learned all about broadcasting at the local Los Angeles radio station KISS-FM. Carol earned a degree in broadcasting in 1982. Vitale hosted her own talk show called The Carol Vitale Show (1989); this program ran on the USA Network for eleven years. In addition, Vitale also designed a sensual lingerie glove called Daring Dainties Sensual Hand Lingerie (this glove was featured in the catalogs for both Playboy and Frederick's of Hollywood), continued to model for "Playboy," and attended various "Playboy" events. Carol lived in both Florida and California and ran her own website in the early 2000s. Alas, her health deteriorated in her latter years as she suffered from lupus and scleroderma. Carol Vitale died at age 61 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in her condo in Aventura, Florida on July 23, 2008.- Al Nesor was born on 31 March 1911 in New York City, New York, USA. Gil Kane is most often associated with the Green Lantern as well as other DC titles and yet, during his long career, he managed to put his signature on virtually every watershed character or comic enterprise that has ever mattered. For example, his landmark Spiderman series of stories gathered together now in one volume but usually referred to as 'The Death of Gwen Stacey" series can be seen as the single most important literary and artistic influence on the monumental Sam Raimi film, Spider-Man (2002).
The major difference being Gwen, Spidey's 1st love, was written out entirely and party girl, Mary Jane, his second love, assumed some of Gwen's grace, vulnerability and innocence as well as her place in the Spiderman Mythos. Gil Kane did that series at the dawn of the 1970s.
Not satisfied with Super-Heroes, Kane also produced an outstanding Graphic novel based on Wagner's Ring Cycle with writer Roy Thomas that mingled respect for old world literature and myth into the art and broke out of the monthly format. This was not new ground for him as he had put out a very bold venture, Blackmark, a novel in Graphic form about 20 years earlier.
Kane battled cancer twice in his later years but up until the last year of his life he was a regular and gracious guest at large conventions. He has received so many awards it would be impossible to list them all. He was a dearly and fiercely loved figure in Comics and Animation. His death sent spasms of grief rippling through the Entertainment Industry because not only was he a great artist, but he was truly a GREAT man.
His influence is everywhere from Comics to Films. However, unlike the insular world of Horror movies & publishing where every director or writer working knows that Forry Ackerman's Famous Monsters of Filmland Magazine put them on the road to their careers, the influence of the three great American Comic Book Artists is less tangible because we absorbed as children, not knowing the difference until adulthood between a penciler and an inker.
Gil Kane's sweeping and graceful arcs of action across the page as well as the sweet and elegant lines to his figures has influenced directors, artists, and others in much the same way as Jack Kirby's chunky, formidable, kinetic energy did. It is a little sad to know that greats such a Kane will not be names upon the lips of everyone who absorbed his legacy, but it is a comfort to know that his legacy is so wide and so far reaching, it has touched the way Animation is conceived now and dare we say, even Art itself.
Kane fought in the Pacific Theater in WWII, drew both comics and some syndicated strips at times, worked for both Marvel and DC, used to carpool with Julius Schwartz, editor at DC Comics from time to time and who was one of his dearest friends. Kane is survived by his wife of over 30 years, Elaine, his three children and two grandchildren. He is buried in Florida where he retired with Elaine in the very late 90s. By David Pollison and Lisa Feerick Pollison, with love.- Herbert Karliner was born on 3 September 1926 in Peiskretscham, Silesia, Germany (now Pyskowice, Poland).
