Yvon Chouinard is founder of outdoor wear maker Patagonia, based in Ventura, California. Chouinard doesn't have his own office at Patagonia's California headquarters. Since 1984, the company has had no private offices. His apparel business took off in the 1970s when Chouinard imported rugby shirts from England and sold them to climbers. Since 1985, Patagonia has set aside 1% of sales to finance grassroots environmental groups in the U.S. and abroad. Revenues hit $750 million in 2015.
Chouinard got his start as a climber in 1953 as a 14-year-old member of the Southern California Falconry Club, which trained hawks and falcons for hunting. After one of the adult leaders taught the boys how to rappel down the cliffs to the falcon aeries. Yvon and his friends became so fond of the sport they started hopping freight trains to the west end of the San Fernando Valley, to the sandstone cliffs of Stoney Point. There, eventually, they learned to climb up as well as rappel down the rock. By 1957, when he was 19, he had already revolutionized mountaineering by creating a piton that could be nailed into and then removed from rock, unlike the European kind, which had to be left in place. He could make two in an hour on his portable forge, and he sold them from the trunk of his car for $1.50 each.
In Yosemite, Chouinard and his friends were called the Valley Cong. He supported himself selling gear from the back of his car, but he profits were slim. There was soon enough demand for Chouinard's gear that he couldn't keep making it by hand; he had to start using tools and dies and machinery. So in 1965, he went into partnership with Tom Frost, who was an aeronautical engineer as well as a climber, and had a keen sense of design and aesthetics. During the nine years that Frost and Chouinard were partners, they redesigned and improved almost every climbing tool, to make them stronger, lighter, simpler, and more functional.- Audra Milos is an American actress, model, and comedian. Harris has helmed 6 short films, A TV Pilot in Central America, and two feature films. He is the leader of Reel Z Productions, a private boutique production house operating out of LA, Phoenix and Cancun Mexico.
Harris is described as a director who is "eccentric" and a "stickler for details". All of the films he has his name on are almost always filmed entirely using practical effects and real world locations. Harris believes as a director making good cinema and a watchable movie is about more than gimmicks an explosions. Harris's unique ability to adapt to high pressure situations makes his role as a director one he is well-suited for.
Harris is adept at screenwriting, Cinematography, and when in a pinch running location sound.- Tom Rowe's life as a musician began at age six, when he received a clarinet. It was then that he set out on the performing path, which ranged from the grange halls of rural Maine to major concert venues, such as Town Hall. Later on, when thirteen years old, he was given a banjo as a gift, which lead him to forming a folk band in high school. They called themselves the Chord Majority and toured Maine extensively. Later, in 1975, shortly after graduating from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in music education, Tom joined the Maine folk/rock group Devonsquare, which split up three months later. He then decided to go with the side of the band that wanted to cover more traditional music, which also consisted of brothers Chuck and Steve Romanoff. Together, they formed the folk trio Schooner Fare. As a member of the band, Tom sang and played electric bass guitar and tin whistle, plus various other instruments. In 1992, he became part of a second group, Rowe by Rowe, a duo which also featured his son, Dave. Six years later, a third member joined, Tom's old friend Denny Breau. It was then that the group's name was changed to Turkey Hollow. Tom had also released a solo album, titled "Whistle Up a Storm", in 1991. Sadly, his life ended in 2004, after he had fought a two and a half month long battle with throat cancer.
