This fine italian comedy directed by Nino Risi deservedly won the gold shell award at San Sebastian cinema festival in 1957. The story of a stubborn village old woman who wishes her grandson marries the richest girl in town to support his studies in Naples and allows her visit Rome is a fun movie with sympathetic characters. The success of the film is maily due to its cast: Renato Salvatori as Raffaele, Tina Pica as nonna Sabella, Silva Koscina as Lucia, Peppino De Filippo as Emilio and Dolores Palumbo as Carmelina. All of them contribute to endow the film with a joyful and happy feeling that benefits the story, based on a book by Pasquale Festa Campanile: La nonna Sabella. The film was a complete success that lead to a sequel with the same cast: La nipote Sabella.
