In 1988 there was a Channel 4 funded film called Stormy Monday that starred Sting as a nightclub owner in Newcastle mixed up in a plot that involved Sean Bean, Tommy Lee Jones and Melanie Griffiths as a waitress in the north east.
Finney which was made by ITV six years later is a spin off, a presumed prequel to the film, with David Morrissey taking over from Sting as Finney.
Both Morrissey and John Woodvine stand out in this series and Morrissey is certainly more memorable in the part than Sting.
Again Finney is a nightclub/Jazz club owner involved with local Newcastle gangsters, feuding families and the mystery of who killed his criminal father.
Shades of Get Carter and Gangsters with rivals who all have something to hide. However the series had a lukewarm reception and has largely been forgotten.
