The Substance (2024)
8/10
the "themes" are irrelevant.

Yep, you will see a lot of reviews that say "oh, the theme of getting old" or "wanting attention from others" but really, they are completely irrelevant - they are the very shell that the character portrays in this film.

What you do get, is by far Demi Moore's best performance of her entire career without exception. And, a masterful combination of visuals and sound, incredible acting from everyone involved, superb direction, and an excellent story that does not rely on moralisms or "themes" to be effective.

However, it's .. not perfect.

The film is WAY too slow. And it makes it always obviosu what part is going to come next in the script, it telegraphs its moves like an incompetent boxer. And it also takes so. Much. Time. To move to the next point in the script, together with the film being so high-intesity, that it can be agonizing to wait for it to progress, but we're still watching because of how incredibly well made it is.

I would recommend this film to anyone who can stomach the fairly intense horror aspect, but i also imagine that some time in the future some shorter-runtime fanedit is going to come out that will make this film substantially better.

My vote, despite the problems: 8/10.
