Why do I tackle each Mamet film, even though it may initially try my patience? It all boils down to the fact that I respect him for defying the insipidness of Hollywood.
Mamet is often misunderstood and reviled for his stage-y dialogue, but its decomposition has the effect of lifting us out of time and place and that is what makes his work approach high art instead of vulgar realism. His stylized language also takes emphasis off the Acting with a capital "A" and places our attention where he wants it -- on the craft of his writing and story line.
I wouln't expect Mamet to pander to mainstream audience expectations, as he had already made a name for himself on the stage before he wrote for films. Undoubtedly, his body of work will become revered as masterful in years to come.
To say that William H. Macy should be "embarrassed" for his acting is irresponsible. Most of the actors are carefully chosen to carry out Mamet's intentions in this film and most accomplish it.
